First, we welcome Carolyn Murren to a newly created position as Advertising Manager, and second, congratulations are in order for Kathy Hansberry on her promotion to Public Relations and Promotions Manager. Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in Kona

By Linda Jane Kelley

Note from Dr. Richard Kelley: For this week’s edition, I asked my daughter Linda Jane Kelley, a resident of Kailua-Kona, to comment on the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, which takes place there every summer – this year’s event comes to an end today.

Hawai‘i is well known as the host to many prestigious and widely viewed sporting events, but perhaps the first competition to put the Aloha State on the global sports map was the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT). For over 50 years Peter Fithian and his wife Roberta – better known as “Bobbi” – have dedicated themselves to the tournament and Hawai‘i tourism. Their vision, dedication and teamwork are some of the reasons for the tournament’s fame and longevity.

Outrigger Aina Nalu“I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU [Diana Lene] for the wonderful generosity and kind hospitality you have shown my brother and sister-in-law during their stay with you. I spoke to my brother over the weekend and the accommodation certainly surpassed his expectations and they were both so happy, it was wonderful to hear. I am sure their original room would have been nice but the one-bedroom condo certainly did wow them and we all have you to thank for that and so thank you once again.”Sonia Sidhu via email

Embassy Suites® - Waikiki Beach Walk® “The Embassy Suites is truly a golden hotel in my opinion. In London, England, the athletes are trying to win gold, silver and bronze medals but the Embassy Suites in Honolulu has the distinction of already winning the gold medal. In particular is your employee/staff member by the last name of Yuet Chun [Yuet Chun Liang] who cleaned and made up our room (2, one-bedroom suites) for our family on the 20th floor. She was so kind and considerate to my 86 year old mother as she treated us with so much kindness and respect which made our stay at your hotel as if it was our home. Every staff member was as nice as Yuet Chun that I wanted to leave a message to you that I think you have a top-notch hotel. Our family can’t say enough about how well we were treated at your hotel and we will surely tell all our families and friends how enjoyable our stay was at the Embassy Suites. Bob [Yeoman] - You have a gold medal team working for you.”Pam Lang & FamilyBurnaby, British Columbia (Canada)

years, and they have two daughters, Kaycee (7) and Kaira (2). Kathy says she’s working on perfecting her work/life balance. When time permits and the kids allow, you’ll find her nose in a good book or engulfed in a movie, most likely a comedy or “Rom-Com” (romantic comedy), as she is admittedly a hopeless romantic. She enjoys writing Haiku poems, recreational hiking and exploring her creative talents with various arts and crafts projects. We wish Carolyn and Kathy much success as they learn and grow in their new roles at Outrigger. Congratulations!

Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa, Noosa “My name is Jim Anderson & my wife (Beth) & I had 8 fantastic days at the Outrigger Noosa earlier this month and I just wanted to pass on our thanks/compliments directly to you [Niel Mason] to ensure you are aware, (which you probably already are), of what a great team you have and what a high level of service excellence was afforded to us from all areas of the resort team...I’m a true believer in providing constructive criticism and/or to give thanks/acknowledgement where due, we as a society tend to be quick to complain when the service is not to our liking but lack in offering positive feedback & praise when we have been the receiver of great service. I want you to know, and ask that you pass on, that we felt that the resort’s facilities/accommodation & most importantly the staff gave us an exceptionally high level of service excellence. Niel we had an awesome time, Beth and I had not been away like that for close to 20 years and although our time away had no specific special occasion like an anniversary or birthday it was the staff, the amenities, the accommodation, the quality & presentation of food that made it a very special occasion. A huge thank you and please pass on our thanks and appreciation...to the whole crew, as they are the ambassadors for ‘Outrigger Little Hastings Street Noosa’ and they do you proud.” Jim Anderson Australia

The Race that Stops a Nation

By Niel Mason

Noosa is one of only 25 towns to host the Melbourne Cup Tour this year. The prized 18-carat gold trophy makes its way through Noosa as part of a three-month journey around Australia in the lead-up to this year’s big race. The Victoria Racing Club presents the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour with the Cup to be held high by the winner of this year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 6. With the $175,000 Cup going on, displays have been set up at local schools and public events so locals and visitors can have their photograph taken alongside the world’s most travelled sporting trophy. I proudly represented Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa and Outrigger Hotels and Resorts in holding the Melbourne Cup against the spectacular background of Noosa Beach. Accompanying the Cup on its tour of Noosa was a dynamic duo of Cup-winning females – Sheila Laxon, the first official female trainer of a Melbourne Cup winner (Ethereal in 2001), and Wendy Green, the owner of 1999 Cup winner Rogan Josh.

Outrigger Kicks off CRP Phase!By the Kaukahi Steering Committee

Last Friday, ‘ohana members from Finance, IT, HR and our partners from Systime and NOI gathered to celebrate the kickoff of the CRP phase of our JDE system replacement project. CRP, which stands for Conference Room Pilot, is when each area tests the functionality, security and customization of the new JDE E1 system. The purpose of the CRP Kickoff gathering was to share the schedule and expectations of the CRP testing process, but as we always do here at Outrigger, we incorporated teambuilding and cultural learning into the meeting as well. One highpoint of the lunch was the opportunity for the participants to try authentic vegetarian Indian food. As many of our friends from Systime hail from India, it is a great opportunity to learn about their culture and what better way to do this than through the sharing of food! We had Vegetable Biryani which is a spiced rice dish, Buttered Nan which is a delicious Indian bread, MattorPoneer which is an north Indian dish made with green peas, cheese and cooked in a creamy sauce with spices and Vegetable Samosas which are spiced mix vegetables in a crisp pastry. The food was so delicious that many who attended have requested Indian food for the next luncheon! The main event of the day was the Kaukahi Logo Origami contest. Each of the ten tables were given origami paper and challenged to come up with the best origami representation of the Kaukahi Logo. Each table did a fantastic job. The top prize went to Table 8 for their double-hulled canoe complete with paddlers

and guiding star! The talented team included Darnell Zablan, Desiree Hee, Jane Inouye, Brandon Asuncion, Mady Agcamaran, Lily Ragasa, Lauren Chow and Wilkin Choy. Congratulations to Team 8, and kudos to all the participants who did a wonderful job on using their creativity and resourcefulness. The actual CRP testing started this past Monday and will take place over a four-week period until early September. This is an exciting phase because it is the first introduction for many of the CRP participants to navigate in depth, with hands-on experience, onto the new E1 system. The purpose of CRP, though, is not to test how well the CRP participant can use the E1 system; rather, it is to test how the system set-up is working. Each CRP participant is given a number of scripts, which are detailed sets of instructions on how to perform a certain task in the JDE E1 system -- e.g., inputting a new employee’s information. They must log into the system and follow the script, making sure that the security is set up correctly (i.e., participants are unable able to access areas they should be restricted from and vice-versa), the system functions correctly (i.e., they can perform their day to day tasks and do their jobs) and that any customizations that were made to the system work correctly (i.e., the system meets our Outrigger-specific needs). CRP testing is a critical step in quality assurance to identify any set-up issues early so they can be fixed. Congratulations to all CRP participants for your dedicated efforts and continued enthusiasm in this very important system implementation. Imua!

Chuck Kelley meets actor Richard Boone (“Have Gun, Will Travel”) as Dr. Richard Kelley

watches – HIBT 1967.

Peter Fithian, C.M. “Charlie” Cooke III, Porter Dickenson, Dudley Lewis, Desmond Stanley and Edward Sultan were the six visionary men who founded what is now viewed as the grandfather of most big game fishing tournaments. Their goal – to showcase to the world the Big Island’s then little-known, wonderful fishing grounds and surrounding beauty – was the force behind their creation of the HIBT in 1959. While growing up in Honolulu during the 1960s, I fondly remember my father, Dr. Richard Kelley, and my brother, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Kelley, traveling to Kailua-Kona to fish in the tournament. They came back home loaded with pictures and stories about Pacific blue marlin caught, the ones that got away and encounters with some of the celebrities who also participated, including actors Lee Marvin, Richard Boone and Jonathan Winters. (Note the snapshots from the family archives above.) Peter Fithian first came to Hawai‘i in 1948 as a midshipman on a U.S. Navy cruiser. After studying hotel management at Cornell University he returned to the Islands in 1955 and managed the Kona Inn. (Yes, the Kona Inn was actually a beautiful, idyllic

hotel back then and not the shopping center it is today.) It was in 1959 that Peter turned his love for sport fishing and Hawai‘i tourism into the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Every August I see Peter, now in his 80s and still tournament director, walking around the Kailua-Kona pier greeting anglers, supervising the logistics of the boats and teams and providing commentary as the afternoon weigh-ins are conducted. Bobbi, tournament co-director, graciously greets family members and guests, answers questions from the media, coordinates and escorts numerous activities and personally tends to visiting dignitaries and government officials. Alongside their outstanding crew of volunteers, Peter and Bobbi work endlessly to ensure that all the teams and crews have the best tournament experience possible. This year 40 teams from 11 countries competed in the tournament. Of particular interest were the four teams from China along with a contingent of dignitaries and government officials. China is interested in sending more visitors to experience deep-sea fishing in Hawai‘i and is exploring developing the same industry in Asia. All week long Bobbi Fithian assisted the 30 Chinese

visitors and even escorted them to Honolulu for a final shopping trip before they returned home. Besides the great fishing, the HIBT is the occasion for a weeklong series of events, including a parade, silent auction, expo, opening ceremonies, a fashion show luncheon, daily weigh-ins at the Kailua-Kona pier, Science Night, a golf tournament and awards banquet. Guests and family members accompanying the teams have a range of activities and sightseeing opportunities to choose from while the boats are out fishing all day long. Peter and Bobbi both own and operate successful visitor-related businesses, but for over half a century they have made the time to oversee the details of the HIBT. They not only are actively involved in the tournament as its directors but view it as a way to promote Hawai‘i and help bring more visitors to our beautiful state. Peter and Bobbi are also mindful of showcasing not just the outstanding fishing in Hawaiian waters but everything the state has to offer. They encourage tournament participants and guests to visit historical sites on the island, patronize local eateries,

purchase souvenirs and local treats to take home, and to visit other islands as well. Watching the care and Aloha they extend to every participant, guest and volunteer who crosses their paths is an amazing experience. They give everyone who approaches them their full attention. The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is one of the many events that help drive Hawai‘i’s economy. Like other sporting and culturally oriented events, it provides national and international media exposure for Hawai‘i and helps the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) showcase Hawaiian culture and promote each island’s distinctive characteristics. According to HTA statistics, sporting events – including the HIBT, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, Honolulu Marathon, Ironman World Championship, Pro Bowl, PGA and LPGA

events, and the Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Race – generate spending of more than $200 million a year in Hawai‘i. Competitors do not usually travel here alone. Coaches, family members, team support staff, members of the media, boosters and fans accompany them as well. In addition, viewers worldwide watch these events via television and streaming Internet, often seeing Hawai‘i’s beauty and warm climate during their own cold and wet seasons, which helps influence vacation plans. The Outrigger ‘ohana recognizes the rich history of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament and extends a warm “Aloha and mahalo” to Peter and Bobbi Fithian for their decades of hard work to ensure the tournament’s continuing success and for their support of Hawai‘i tourism.
