Two tropical storms, Kilo and Ignacio, near the Hawaiian Islands as of August 26, 2015. Ignacio was upgraded

to a hurricane later that day.

“Blowin’ in the Wind” – I was thinking of those haunting 1962 lyrics by folk singer Bob Dylan this week as I kept in touch with members of our ‘ohana in Hawai‘i. This month, they have been challenged by a series of powerful tropical storms that have bracketed and crisscrossed the Hawaiian Islands, producing torrential rains and flooding in many areas. On O‘ahu, the storm-related overflow of sewage lines near the Hawaii Convention Center this past Monday, August 24, resulted in a three-day closure of most parts of Waikīkī Beach. The central area of the beach, which abuts prime resort properties such as Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Sheraton Waikiki, was probably free of contamination, but was nonetheless closed by authorities as a precautionary measure until tests could be completed.

Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort

“My son and I stayed at the Outrigger Waikiki from August 1-3, and checked out on the 4th. It is my third visit (having grown up on the islands and moved away) and all my visits have been good, but this was the best, due to the outstanding service from Rowena Colling at the front desk. She made the stay special with two follow-up calls and a special gift bag. “I had brought my son to celebrate his 21st birthday (in addition to visiting my father who is in a home for Alzheimer’s) and deep-sea fish. Her smile, laughter, and kindness were/are extraordinary and she shows the true spirit of ‘Aloha’. “She is a very special person and employee!”

Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort shows up and shows out By Rory Campbell

On August 22, our dedicated team attended the recent Charity Run, held by the Four Seasons, in a show of Island Unity and Community in fight against Cancer. This event has been the most successful charity event in Samui and one which many of the hotels are able to support, including Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort. Our hardy team was up at 5 a.m. in order to make the start. All completed their various events and enjoyed a well-earned breakfast on the beach. Participants filled the Nathon pier on race day with registration being at 6 a.m. and the race starting time at 7 a.m. Before the race, runners made sure to pick up

registration packages that included a t-shirt or a polo shirt. Those who decided to race had the option to choose from either the 1.5 or 6.2 mile walk or run where the overall winner was awarded ‘Her Majesty the Queen’s Cup’. Since 1981, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts worldwide, led by the founder and chairman, Mr. Isadore Sharp, has been holding an annual charity event for cancer research. These runs in particular have been existent for the past 17 years in Thailand and all benefits have gone to cancer research. These Cancer Care events are all inspired and started by The Terry Fox run, the original in Canada in 1980.

“I would definitely stay here again. Good location and so convenient with kids. The room is huge and the beds were perfect for 4 of us. But most of all, the service was superb. When my son fell and hit his head the lifegaurd, medic and manager were quick to assist us and helped transport us to the hospital. When my husband left the safe box unlocked we received a letter from the management to call them. They had locked the safe box for us and all our cash and every bit of it was accounted for. Really good honest staff at the hotel. All were friendly and helpful and it really made our stay enjoyable. Amazing hotel. Thank you Outrigger for the warm hospitality and fantastic 5 days there. Hope to revisit you next year.”

Fans cool down at the Outrigger Resorts Soccer ClassicBy Ellie Agustin

History was made at the Outrigger Resorts Classic on August 21, as Hawai‘i played against Stanford who ranks #3 in the Soccer Conference. 2,000 fans made the trek to Waipi‘o to cheer on the Rainbows team. The Wahine also battled against California on August 23. Although both games were losses, the Wahine did not disappoint, as they gave the fans a great talent show. No rest for our Wahine as they will be playing Wyoming on August 27 and Denver on August 29 at the Outrigger Resorts No Ka ‘Oi. At home, #teamOutrigger volunteer was entertaining fans with games and prizes, including room giveaways. Outrigger also hosted another great treat for fans with complimentary shaved ice. The Kona Ice truck was on site to give away free shaved ice to the first 200 fans that arrived. Mahalo to our dedicated ‘ohana UH Wahine volunteer boosters: Ricol Akana-Phillips, Joey Fukuoka, Ellen Isidro, Kelli-Ann Morihara, Lani Von, Reuben Nakagawa, Arnold Agustin, Ellie Agustin and Kathy Hansberry.

Outrigger Fiji tops in battle of the baristasBy Donna Parkin

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort has triumphed in the battle of the baristas with the resort’s Malakai Kunahau winning the semi-finals of the Barista of the Year contest. Malakai beat off a strong showing from 12 other baristas from Fiji’s Coral Coast properties and will now contest the Grand Finale to be held in November as part of the Moffat Salon Culinaire. Organised by the Fiji Chef’s Association, the Salon Culinaire is Fiji’s leading culinary competition with over 300 chefs taking part and culminating in Fiji’s Chef of the Year Award. Meanwhile, Malakai is honing his coffee making skills and looking forward to bringing home the Fijian barista’s version of Olympic Gold to Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort. Good luck Malakai. Track of Tropical Storm Ignacio calculated on Wednesday, August 26, 2015. (Ignacio was upgraded to Hurricane status later that day.)

Water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean during the week of August 10, 2015. Red indicates areas with water temperatures above the average for 1981-2010. Note the Hawaiian Islands, which are

barely visible near the “11 o’clock” position on the graphic.

Track of Tropical Storm Kilo calculated on Friday, August 21, 2015.

Hawai‘i

Waikīkī Beach was reopened on Wednesday, but almost simultaneously, a tropical storm called Ignacio, then still east-southeast of Hawai‘i, grew to hurricane strength. It is currently predicted to track just north of Hilo on the Big Island as early as Monday, August 31. Scientists believe this year’s increase in Pacific Ocean storm activity is related to “El Niño,” the nickname of the cyclical warming of the Pacific’s waters. Writing for Climate Central, Andrea Thompson postulates that the current El Niño could be the strongest in the historical record, which dates back to 1950. Last month, temperatures in a key area of the Pacific were more than 2oF (about 1oC) above average, second only to the blockbuster El Niño of 1997–1998.

The geographic extent of the higher temperatures is dramatically shown on the accompanying thermal image of the eastern Pacific. The red areas are those with water temperatures during the week of August 10, 2015, higher than the 1981-2010 average for that week. The darkest areas are near the equator, but significantly higher-than-average temperatures extend from Central America all the way north to Canada. The unusually warm water is accompanied by changes in the circulation of the atmosphere overhead, which, in turn leads to changes in the weather like those we are currently seeing.

Hurricane season in the central Pacific lasts from June 1 through November 30 each year. However, Outrigger Resorts’ properties extend from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean to Hawai‘i in the central Pacific. It is almost always “storm season” somewhere. As resort hosts, we are responsible for the comfort and safety of our guests as well as each other, our families and our communities. Let’s keep working together to ensure the safety and comfort of all those for whom we are responsible this year and every year!
