673 WWI memorial 9ct gold handmade fob “For Duty Done” in fi ve parts by rare maker Kitchen & Bingham, reverse engraved “For War Services from Residents of Eastwood Municipality In Memory of J.R.Forrest” lovelyThe fob almost certainly concerns 3046 Private John Robertson Forrest of 54 Battalion, who was born in Scotland and served with the 6th Gordon Highlanders Territorial Force before enlisting with the AIF 5th July 1915, KIA 19th or 20th July 1916 in France and lies at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Cemetery. The Municipality of Eastwood is located in the greater Sydney area where John Forrest enlisted. Strangely, AWM records list another expatriate Scotsman, Archibald James Forrest who resided in Queensland with service number 3046; remarkably he also was KIA in France in early 1917 Est. $300

Soon afterwards he migrated to Western Australia with a regimental comrade Henry Ransom, whom he persuaded to pose as his brother under the name Harry Chumleigh, an alias Ransom continued to use until his death (including WWI service in which he rose to the rank of Captain).

In 1909 both men enlisted in the Royal Australian Artillery in Perth and attended the fi rst Army School for Instructors at Albury NSW the following year. Harold was posted to the newly established Royal Military College at Duntroon where he served as regimental sergeant major for seventeen years. His private life is described as ‘colourful’; he married several times and there is evidence that he adopted and used several variations of his personal name.A similar item engraved ‘S.S.M.Hy. Chumleigh’ was sold at auction in Sydney in 2007 (Noble Numismatics Sale 86, lot 4217); presumably the corresponding medal awarded to his comrade Henry Ransom, alias Harry Chumleigh Est. $100
