The Strathburn Collection of

Australian Gold Coins

The Strathburn collection of some 240 gold coins was formed during the 12 years from 1960 – 1971. Put together as a date collection of Australian sovereigns and halves, the vendor set about to collect a sovereign and half sovereign coin of each date from each of the Australian Mints of issue (Sydney, Melbourne and Perth). Along the way he also managed to secure an Adelaide Pound!

It is interesting that some of the more “common” rarities of today were not present in the collection – they were not available to collectors in those days. It is also interesting that the collection contains some coins of amazing quality together with some that you would consider fairly average! It is a mixed bag and it will pay handsomely to inspect the coins on offer. The grades we have used were in fact those notated from that period. It is quite fascinating to see the “movement” in standards over the ensuing fi ve decades! Some magnifi cent coins listed as gVF and EF would run aUnc or nearly so today. Our vendor asked us to use the grades originally applied to the coins when he purchased them – quite a learning curve for the cataloguer. He has also consigned the entire collection without reserve. Many of the coins were sourced from our Company, some via auction and many from other local and overseas dealers.
