Nearing the end of a voyage of 81 days from England, her position in relation to the heads was misjudged because of poor visibility and she was driven against the cliffs of South Head where she heaved onto her side in the swell and almost immediately broke up with the loss of 121 lives. Commemorative Medallions

759 Resolution and Adventure Medal 1772 in brass with hint of gilt in the devices (MH373; BHM165) struck from the fi rst, or cracked, reverse die with anchor in the vertical position, trace of the original

suspension mount removed and neatly fi led down to the edge, nearly EF and very rare

Struck by Matthew Boulton for Captain Cook’s second voyage to the Pacifi c, sailing in the ‘Resolution’ together with the ‘Adventure’ under the command of Captain Tobias Furneaux. Examples of the medal were struck in silver, bronze and brass-gilt, with possibly two additional pieces struck in gold. Most of the bronze pieces were unmounted although the Admiralty had a quantity of mounted bronze and brass-gilt medals delivered to Cook who took them on the voyage with the intention of presenting them to natives in the South Seas. Mounted specimens are almost always in poor condition, most being found in New Zealand where they were presumably presented to the Maoris. The present example shows quite clearly the remains of the original mount which Boulton fi xed to the medal by means of screwing a pin into a hole that was bored into the edge upon which a movable loop was attached (no longer present). Therefore, one can presume that this piece was amongst those that were with Cook on board the Resolution making it particularly desirable thus, and of exceptional condition in comparison to others of its kind.
