The currency had been intended to relieve the economic distress of the Spanish territories in continental North America but the loss was followed by further decline and the Louisiana Purchase was negotiated soon after. She was attacked in the Mozambique Channel by an East India Company fl eet of Dutch and British ships and in an attempt to escape she ran into a shoal and was grounded on a reef. Her treasure was plundered by the enemy ships before she broke up and sank with the loss of some 300-400 passengers and crew. 3043 Wreck of the Tek Sing, blue and white glazed dish, decorated with bamboo and peony pattern, 153mm diameterNearing the end of her voyage enroute from Amoy to Batavia with about 1800 people aboard and carrying a cargo of Chinese porcelain from Dehua in Fujian Province, the Chinese junk ‘Tek Sing’ struck a reef in the Gaspar Strait off Sumatra in the South China Sea and sank on 6th February 1822. The next day 200 people were rescued from the sea but approximately 1600 were lost, placing the Tek Sing in the fi ve worst non-military maritime disasters in terms of loss of life. The wreck was discovered in 1999 and the subsequent salvage operation recovered a huge number of Qing Dynasty porcelain items, the largest ever discovery of its kind, which was sold by Nagel’s of Stuttgart the following year. Some pieces exhibit production imperfections in the glaze and slight traces of marine sediment but all remain in remarkable condition considering they survived the impact of the wrecking of the ship and then lay submerged on the seabed for nearly two centuries. Each piece retains the original Nagel stickers confi rming they are from the cargo of the Tek Sing Est. $75
