Mark your calendars for a time of food, fellow-ship and learning. Look for the sign-up sheets in
the Narthex, or call the office to have your name put on the list for this month’s meeting.
Now is the perfect season for planning. The cold keeps most of us indoors and at home
more than usual. Fresh is the feeling that this is a new year and therefore a new start. In
another week, it will be back to business as usual. So, perhaps right now is the time for
us to decide that we won’t be returning to business as usual. Instead, let’s move on to
living as Christ has called us. “This year, I will be faithful to God by ___________.”
It’s up to you to fill in the blank. Prayerfully, plan the efforts you and your family will
make to follow Christ this year.
This is also a slow season for church activities. While this is an opportunity for us to
catch our breath, it is not an idle time. It is a season for planning. It won’t be long be-
fore Wednesday night activities, youth meetings, family ministry events, prime timers,
mission efforts and meetings of all types will fill the church calendar. We plan opportu-
nities to strengthen, support and encourage one another. We plan opportunities to grow
in understanding and challenge our assumptions. We plan opportunities to reach out to
the community, the surrounding areas and even the entire world.
Please join me in prayer for the coming year for ourselves, our families, our church, our
community and our world. May God richly bless you. Let Him keep you safe through
the winter. Let Him awaken new life in you with spring. Let Him warm your hearts in
summer. May you greet autumn with joyful abundance. And finally, let us look forward
to a new year full of new beginnings and new blessings.
See you Sunday, Tom

The Daniel Plan: 40 days to a Healthier Life Style
The core resource of the Daniel Plan and a life changing guide
to total health by Rick Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen, and Dr. Mark
Hyman in association with Dr. Oz.
The Daniel Plan is a groundbreaking healthy lifestyle program
founded on biblical principles and focused on The Essentials:
Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. The program offers an
innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people
get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life
areas. Each essential supports and influences the others, offering a practical step-by-step
approach for anyone to follow.
The essentials of Faith and Friends are what we call the “secret sauce” that makes The
Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a supportive
community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships. We have
learned that the process of getting healthy and staying healthy relies on the support
and encouragement of friends. With the support of God and your group, you have far
more than willpower helping you to make positive changes so you can be consistent
and sustain your new healthy lifestyle.
The overarching message of The Daniel Plan is about abundance, not deprivation, and
this is why the plan is both transformational and sustainable. The Daniel Plan teaches a
step-by-step approach and offers simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your
current lifestyle. Throughout the program you are encouraged to rely on God’s power,
and the application of dependable biblical principles.

The Singles Ministry of First United Methodist Church is dedicat-
ed to enriching the single life for young singles and single parents. The mission of this min-
istry is to offer a safe and comfortable environment where singles, age 55 and under, can
grow spiritually and relationally, taking time to develop meaningful relationships with friends
who are supportive and encouraging. We believe that through serving others, we share
our faith in Jesus Christ and in return find purpose and fulfillment in our own lives.

Make this a year of health. What are you going to do for your health this year? Take a look at all aspects of your health – physical, mental, spiritual and emotional. Your habits did not form over night, nor will they disappear quickly. Sometimes it is better to make small changes over a period of time. Perhaps you can begin to achieve good physical health by eliminating second helpings – give your brain time to catch up with your stomach; cut down on sugary drinks; skip the bread (groan); get that check up
with your doctor; find a walking partner and commit to some exercise. To keep your brain sharp, you may like to solve number or word puzzles, or take a class! Stimulating conversa-tion with a friend or acquaintance is good for mental and emotional balance. Spiritual and emotional health may be enhanced when you attend worship services or become in-volved with church programs.
Many cultures promote forgiveness as a way to begin the New Year. Research shows that forgiving others makes you healthier by lowering blood pressure, stress, hostility, anxiety and chronic pain. Letting go also gives you a sense of well-being that translates into healthier rela-tionships and less illness. See how all of your being is affected?
It is not easy, but with God’s help you can make the choice to take control and keep the hurt from ruling your emotions or actions. Forgiveness takes time. Give it your energy and by the end of the year, see what changes have been made in your life.
