Musings
Dear Friends, There is a commercial on television about parents and children that I saw recently. The point of this commercial is that our children listen more to us than we think they do. Well, this past Sunday emphasized that point. Last Sunday, May 5, was our Youth Sunday. The youth led the entire service and offered the message for the day. They led us in prayer, led the service of Holy Com-munion, served as liturgists and ushers, and formed a musical ensemble that provided most of the special music for the day. Two of our senior high youth, Drew Hudgins and Claire Beaupre, gave the message and did an excellent job telling why Carbondale First has been so important in their spiritual life. It was very clear that they have been “listening” all the years they have been a part of this Church. Some-times, I think, as adults, we are not certain whether our young people are listening when we try to teach them the lessons of life that they will need as they grow into adulthood. Sunday’s service was an affirmation that they are listening and why we have learning opportunities for children and youth here in the Church. What is most important is that the service was truly a worshipful experi-ence and not just a time of involving youth. I went away from the service knowing that I had been in worship and I had connected with God as I worshiped. Some of you have taught in our children and youth departments at one time or another and so you should feel good about the work you have done. Sometimes it is the smallest of things that can make a difference in a child’s or teenager’s life and so that makes everything we do as adults im-portant. Keep up the good work! I want to thank the youth for providing their leadership in worship this week. I also want to thank Bob Weiss, our Director of Music, for practicing and directing the ensemble. I want to thank Yiwen Bi, our Associate Pastor, for putting together this service and getting our youth involved. Yiwen planned and organized the entire service. Finally, I just want to thank our youth, again, for being who they are and for making Carbondale First very proud of them. I came away from the worship service feeling good about what it means to have watched these young people grow and mature in their faith these last ten years. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: ON SUNDAY, JUNE 2, WE WILL WELCOME NEW MEMBERS INTO OUR CHURCH FAMILY. IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN JOINING OR JUST WANT TO INQUIRE ABOUT CHURCH MEMBERSHIP, CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE AT 457-2416. See You Sunday,
Alan

News from Missions Committee—
The Murphysboro Food Pantry has been struggling with roof damage
that occurred due to high winds on March 14, 2019. The Pantry has
had to change how it operates and relocate some of its operations to
areas not affected by the roof damage. Contributions to assist with
repair are welcome and can be sent to P.O. Box 671, Murphysboro, IL 62966.
The Pantry published its 2018 Annual Summary. Donations were successful due to contri-
butions from many supporters. The Pantry served 33,337 individuals, within 8,446 house-
holds. That’s a monthly average of 1,262 children, 283 seniors ages 62 and over, and 111
veterans. Murphysboro residents totaled 3,853 individuals while Carbondale was close be-
hind with 3,335. Other communities within Jackson County had 1,253 persons counting on
Pantry services. A total of 544,491 pounds of food were distributed in 2018. That amounts
to over 272 tons of food. This year the Pantry is also tracking dog/cat food and non-food
items such as toilet paper, soap, and various toiletries.
Thank you, Missions Committee
