FIRST Thoughts

Last week I introduced the topic of inviting someone to church or sharing your faith. Here are some things to keep in mind. .

Tips for Sharing Your Faith

Pray. Always talk to God about people before you talk to people about God. Ask him to lead you to those he wants you to reach. As God puts people on your mind, add them to your prayer list, and use a tool like the Invest and Invite Card to pray for them daily. (We’ll have these cards soon at First Church)

Listen. You can’t build authentic relationships without being a great listen-er. Take a genuine interest in the cares and concerns of the people around you. Show respect for who they are and what they have to say. Remember: People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Build on areas of common ground. Look for and initiate conversations around areas of common ground. Plan activities or get into deeper dis-cussions around these points of mutual interest.

Mention spiritual matters early. Plant early seeds. When a friend asks what you did over the weekend, you might mention that you went to church as part of your answer. Simply mentioning church or Bible Study early on will help you introduce an invitation when the time is right.

Always be ready. As the Apostle Peter urges: If you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it (1 Peter 3:15). Be prepared to share your story and invite others to church.

Helen Keller said, ”Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” She also said, “When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don’t see the one that has opened for us.” Our Fall sermon series is an opportunity to focus on the “open door” of happiness. The emerging field of Positive Psychology shows that there are things we can do and choices we can make that help us feel more contentment and happiness. It probably shouldn’t be surprising that most of these are things the Bible and church tradition also teach. Our new sermon series - “Happy People” - will be a motivating walk through Spiritual Disciplines such a Bible Reading, Meditation and Prayer, Generosity, Fasting, and Wor-ship. It will encourage you to grow in faith and also show how these practices lower anxiety, improve health, and have the benefit of helping us become more “Happy People.” Make a point of joining us every Sunday when you are able.

A New Small Group: Searching for Happiness

A new small group is starting soon to accompany the upcoming Fall Sermon Series: “Happy People”

What: Pastor Howard White and Leah Farrar-White will lead a study of the book: Searching for Happiness: How Generosity, Faith and Other Spiritual Habits Can Lead to a Full Life by Martin Thielen.

When: Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., Sept. 15 to Nov. 10, 2019

How Green Can You Be?

Earthwise365! Reducing Our Footprint One Step at a Time (PS828). How green can you be? This class is offered at John A. Logan College in the Community Education curriculum this fall.

The course will learn practical ways to help reduce our environmental footprint by exploring various topics. The class meets 6 sessions from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays beginning September 12, 2019, at John A. Logan College in Carterville. The fee is $20.00.

We will make our way to Powell Symphony Hall this morning for their popular program

- the Coffee and Donuts Concert. We will arrive just in time for the pre-concert lecture.

Enjoy this interesting perspective of the music which you will hear about from one of the

conductors of the Symphony.

Stephane Deneve conducts the St. Louis Symphony for Brahms' Fourth Symphony.

Violinist Gil Shaham, beloved by St. Louis Symphony musicians

and audiences, performs a concerto that

lies close to his heart. Bartok's concerto is

a poignant farewell to the composer's na-

tive Hungary. Brahms' Symphony No. 4

shares similar emotions, the sorrow and

pain of a goodbye, which Deneve and the Symphony play with fervor.

After the concert, return to our motor coach and travel to the "Hill" for a late lunch at Favazza's. After lunch, we'll stop at the Missouri Bakery here on the "Hill" for a little shopping time. Then we'll return back to Carbondale arriving at approxi-mately 6:30 p.m.

Renew Class - Renew is a group of women seeking deeper meaning in their lives through Bible study, reflection and prayer. New study started August 11: Five Means of Grace-Experience God’s Love the Wesleyan Way. They meet in the Chapel. Women of all ages are welcome.

The Electives Class - Scripture studies following the lectionary led by Rev. John Sims. They meet in the Heritage Room. All are welcome! \

Small Group Opportunities

Gentle Toning, Stretch, and Yoga Techniques meets on Thursdays at 5:45 p.m., Rm 404, the Chapel.

Golden Yoga meets on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. and on Fridays at 9:30 a.m., Rm 404, the Chapel. A fee is charged for this class.

Grateful Hearts meets on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in Room 308. Class will resume on September 11.

Men’s Group All men of the church are invited to coffee and refreshments on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. in the Heritage Room. We discuss anything and everything from the perspective of our relationship with God.

The Daniel Plan Essentials meets in Room 403 at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesdays. They started the series The Science of Natural Healing on April 2. Everyone welcome.
