  • 1. AS Evaluation- Question 1 In what way does your media productuse, develop or challenge forms and conventions?Robbie Dale

2. My media product is a front cover, contents pageand double page spread of a music magazine. The genre of music my magazine covers isalternative rock. My magazine is called Revelations. 3. Before I started making my product, Iresearched a variety of, similar existingmagazines. These magazines were NME, Q and Kerrang. Ilooked at these to understand the codes andconventions of these music magazines. 4. I have stuck to many ofthe codes andconventions. The frontcover uses a largemasthead at the top ofthe page, this is aconvention followedby both the magazinesI looked at, as itallowed a viewer tosee the magazine titlewhen its on the shelf. 5. I placed the barcodein the corner of thepage with the dateand price above it. This is a commonconvention I haveseen throughoutKerrang, NME and Q 6. I also placed severalcover lines upon thecover, which is acommon trait, alongwith a large headlineandstrapline, advertisingthe main story in themagazine. This is aconvention used byboth the magazines Ilooked into. 7. Using one large image to promotethe main article for the magazine Istuck to convention, howeverwhile the use of smaller pictures isalso utilised on the twomagazines, I challenged theconventions by not having them asI thought they would drawattention away from the mainstory. I didnt want to overwhelmthe reader so therefore kept thecover clear of any other images. 8. My contents pagesticks closely toconventions as well. Ihad the articlesnumbered which is acommon convention.I chose to put twocolumns on mycontents page as thiswas commonpractice. 9. As it is conventional to add images tothe contents page I included twoimages. One is of a gig, a common imagefound on contents pages as it showsevents the magazine covers. The other image is a subscriptionadvert. It is common practice to havea subscription box at the bottom ofthe contents page. The images filled the space on thepage well and looked professional 10. Finally, I included a headline, a convention seen inthe vast majority of magazines.I did not add in an editorial column even thoughthey are common on contents pages, I did notadd one as I found it drew attention away fromthe main articles.I stuck to using the same few fonts throughoutthe magazine to stick to convention and style. This meant that the magazine looked consistentand each page is recognisable as being from thesame magazine. 11. My double page spread also sticks closely tocodes and conventions. My double pagespread has a large headline, keeping in linewith the conventions of the magazines Ilooked at while revealing the band thearticle is about. I separated the article intomultiple columns, as was the same in all ofthe magazines I researched. 12. I used one large image on mydouble page spread, whichtook up on of the pages thisis a convention I followed asmany magazines only use onepage for text while the other isa image about the article. Ithought that that article lookedeffective as it wasntoverloaded with multipleimages. I think sticking to theconvention of not using toomany pictures worked wellhere. 13. The only major convention I broke in my doublepage spread was by not adding a quote from thearticle anywhere. I found that it did not mergewith my article well and therefore left it out. Ithought that my opening paragraph, image andheadline drew the readers in without the need ofthe quote. Its relatively common to see and amoderate convention to break, but I found that itsuited my magazine perfectly without one. 14. The reason I chose to stick to majority of theconventions was that, stylistically, it gave me amagazine that looked professional. The fontand pictures were stylised to appeal to mytarget audience, they would recognise themagazine as being relevant to their age groupand preferred music tastes.
