Faces of Local Historical Figures
Pictured on the wall left to right: President Abraham Lincoln, Jesse W. Fell, Judge David Davis, James Allin, Minnie Salzman-Stevens, Georgianna Trotter, Rachel Crothers, Major Julius Witherspoon, and Kickapoo Chief Machina. 104 W. Monroe St.
Jesse W. Fell was a prominent Illinois businessman, lawyer, real estate developer, horticulturalist and political ally. He is perhaps best known as the founder of Illinois State Normal School (now Illinois State University) and for his influence in securing the Illinois Central and Chicago Alton Railroads to intersect 2 miles north of town (now Normal, IL). He was Bloomington’s first lawyer (1833) who later sold his practice to young lawyer (and future judge) David Davis. Fell, a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln, encouraged the future president to challenge his opponent Stephen Douglas to a series of now famous debates in the 1858 US Senate Campaign.
Judge David Davis was a U.S. Senator from Illinois and an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He also served as Lincoln’s campaign manager at the 1860 Republican National Convention. His home, the David Davis Mansion (Cloverlawn) is listed as a National Historic Landmark, and is listed on the National Historic Registry. The mansion is open to the public.
James Allin built the first house in what would soon become the City of Bloomington in the spring of 1830. Later that year he petitioned the state legislature to create the County of McLean for which he donated twenty-two and a half acres for the county seat. He served twice as State Senator. He also served on the first Board of Trustees for Illinois Wesleyan. James Allin is remembered as the “Father of Bloomington” and one of the founders of McLean County.
Minnie Salzman-Stevens was a famous opera singer who went to Europe in the 1900s. A soprano, she became quite popular in London and performed in the Wagner Festivals in Bayreuth in both 1911 and 1913. She died in 1950 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Writer Agatha Christie gave an intriguing account of Stevens’ vast talents in her autobiography.
Georgianna Trotter was the first woman to serve on the Bloomington Board of Education. She was elected to the school board in 1874, some 20 years before women were granted the right to vote. She also served on the Withers Public Library Board. In addition, Trotter (with brother John) was a successful businesswoman in the lumber, grain, and coal business and served as a nurse in the Civil War.
Rachel Crothers was a prolific and successful playwright and theatre director best known for her well-crafted plays. One of the most famous was “Susan and God” which was made into a film in 1937 starring Joan Crawford and Frederick March. She graduated from University High School and ISU (then Illinois State Normal School) and furthered her studies in Boston and New York. She broke new ground in her field, presenting plays with social themes and moral problems affecting women in the 20th century, including such issues as the double standard, trial marriages, divorce and Freudianism. She established a number of philanthropic groups to improve the welfare of her theatrical colleagues, including the American Theatre Wing for war relief.
Major Julius Witherspoon enlisted in the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in Springfield in 1898. This was a colored regiment formed of local African American men, mainly from McLean County. It was the only regiment of colored troops to be officered entirely by colored men. Julius was named Captain of the regiment and led the infantry into garrison duty in Cuba during the Spanish American War.
Kickapoo Chief Machina, the fiercely independent leader of the Kickapoos, consistently opposed forced removal and acculturation. By so doing, he insured the tribe’s survival into the 21st century.
