Arts Center of Yates County

ACYC Receives Grant for Sunny Point Renovations The face of the Arts Center’s lakeside facility, Sunny Point, is under-going some changes. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the J.M. McDonald Foundation, as well as donations from local individuals and the Penn Yan Art Guild’s “marvelous minis” fundraiser, work is underway on the first phase of improvements to Sunny Point. The property, which was given to the Arts Center in 2008 as an es-tate gift by Dr. Annie Smith, consists of a small white cottage, a red “studio barn” and a small boathouse. Over the past year, volunteers have been working to convert the boathouse on the property into a seasonal ceramics studio. Thanks to donated equipment and sweat equity, that project is close to completion. The lakeside porch on the red barn has been considered unsafe for a number of years. Sunny Point committee members worked with a profes-sional architect to develop plans to replace the porch and open up the first floor space that would not interfere with plans for future improvements, which include installing a handicapped accessible bathroom and developing the space on the second floor of the “barn”. Dundee contractor Paul Brown, who was responsible for the renova-tions on the 127 Main Street building, will be doing the first phase Sunny Point renovations as well. The Arts Center board hopes to have the im-provements finished by late spring to allow expanded use of the property throughout the summer. Our thanks to the J.M. McDonald Foundation and everyone who is helping make this project a reality.

Community Arts Grants Awarded With apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein…”[art] is bustin’ out all over” Yates County! Seven local groups received funding through the Arts Center of Yates County’s Community Arts Grant program for projects that will en-gage area youth, adults and seniors in the arts.

The Community Arts Grant program is funded every year from the pro-ceeds of the Arts Center’s annual Attic Art Sale. This year’s event, held the weekend of Penn Yan’s Sidewalk Sale day, brought in $1,400. (Continued on p. 2)

YCAC‘s programs are supported in part with public funds from the

New York State Council on the Arts.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the quality of

life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing

opportunities for active participation in the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop

art programs and projects; coordinate,

schedule, and publicize events; develop & main-tain physical facilities.

From the Executive Director Kris Pearson:

“We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne” wrote the poet Robert Burns. Turns out the rather dour Scot was talking about raising a toast to health and happiness and the blessings of time “long since.” (Really! Look it up!)

While the year 2015 may not be “time long since” yet, we’re happy to raise a toast to the many blessings of the year past and the strong foundation it has provided for the Arts Center as we move forward into the new year – the 40th year since the creation of the Yates County Arts Council!

We hope that we’re fulfilling the vision of those early Arts Center organizers – with a thriving Main Street center that includes a top notch gal-lery, comfortable workshop and meeting space and staff. Our list of workshops con-tinues to expand, encompassing an ever expanding list of artistic mediums – paint-ing, drawing, ceramics, basketry, jewelry, sculpture, culinary arts and more. We’re happy to showcase the immense talents of a growing circle of local and regional art-ists both in the gallery and as instructors for workshops on-site and off-site.

We continue to be blessed by Dr. Annie Smith’s generous gift of her lakeside estate, Sunny Point, which is in the midst of some necessary upgrades this winter and should open in late spring not only with expanded workshop space but also with a seasonal lakeside ceramics studio in place!

So start the New Year by joining us in lifting a glass of gratitude to the Yates artists of four decades ago, our current members, business and community partners and all who’ve helped along the way to celebrate the arts in Yates County.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere! and gie's a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak' a right gude-willie waught, for auld lang syne. –Robert Burns

(Continued from P. 1 Community Arts Grants Awarded)

Eight groups applied for a total of $1,932 in funds. Their applications were reviewed by a volunteer committee, which made the final decision on the grants.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester received a $250 grant for a painting pro-ject with the Penn Yan “Bigs” program, which matches elementary school students with high school mentors.

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program will use their $200 grant for a clay sculpt-ing program for Yates County youth.

Penn Yan Middle School students, under the direction of Lynn Hazlett-Beach, will be using their $250 grant as part of a community awareness project – making ceramic poppies to sell in memory of a veteran or in honor of a service member.

Penn Yan Public Library will use a $150 grant to sponsor a Chinese brush painting class for adults.

St. Mark’s Terrace in Penn Yan was awarded a $100 grant which will help leverage a larger grant from the Elmira-Corning Community Foundation’s Keuka Fund. Those funds will help provide free art workshops at St. Mark’s Terrace this winter.

St. Michael’s School will use their $200 grant for an outdoor “100s grid” painting project combining art and math in a recreational setting.

SkylArc Studio was awarded $250 to help fund a field trip to Artisan Works Gallery in Rochester for the studio program participants.

Thanks to all who donated items to the Attic Art Sale in support of the Community Arts Grants program!

“Cabin Fever” Featuring,

Straight From His Cabin…

John Koffer and his Authentic Tintype

Photographs Also featuring Basket Weaver Joan Belles,

Spinner and Fiber Artist Gisela Schneider, Alan & Rosemary Bennett’s Fish and Re-Purposed Furniture Painted by Kathy Disbrow.

Opening Sunday, February 7, 1:00-3:00 PM with a live demonstration of spinning. Closing on Sunday, March 13, with a live demonstration of tintype photography!

Off the grid, at a Dundee address, lives a gentleman named John Koffer, know to photography aficio-nados as the premiere maker of full scale true 19th century authentic wet-plate collodion photography in America (perhaps the world) today. RIGHT HERE IN YATES COUNTY! John has crossed the country taking photos which could pass for Civil War documents, developed in his dark-room wagon,

pulled by his horse “Brownie”. (Hmm...related to the camera?) Each summer he conducts “Camp Tintype” on his rural site, teaching oth-ers this lost skill, as well as offering portrait sittings. His photos hang in major galleries in New York and other cities, but will come “home” for our exhibit.

Gisela Schneider will be spinning at the “Cabin Fever” opening, Sunday, February 7. No, wait...not spinning

spinning, but making yarn from natural fibers. Joan Belles’s baskets take many shapes, functional, decorative, small enough to hang around your neck, large enough to toss the month’s papers in.

Docent Appreciation Luncheon 2015

This group of docents, representing only about half of ACYC’s volunteers, enjoyed a catered luncheon at the gallery to honor their contribution to our success. Without you, we wouldn’t open the doors! Thanks!

“Palm of the Hand” Writers Mondays Jan. 4 & Feb.1, 4:00-5:30 PM

The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-of-the-Hand” memoir writers meet, in the Board Room of the Arts Cen-ter. The concept of “Palm of the Hand” is to write about a single anecdote of your life expressed in no more than one page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each read and offer feedback if requested. (And we each kick in $1 to ACYC.)

Oliver House Coordinated Exhibit With Arts Center

Yates County History Center invites the public to enjoy a display of its tin type photo collection beginning Tuesday, February 2 inside the Oliver House Museum. The collection of almost 100 portraits illustrates the affection between siblings, parent and child, and husband and wife with a delightful assortment of studio props. The photographic process used to create a tin type was cheap, easy and quick. The process created a direct positive on the thin metal sheet coated with dark lacquer or enamel. Popular during the Civil War, they were easily carried in soldier’s pocket. Studio portraits such as those in the YCHC exhibit were initially the most pre-dominant. Eventually, due to the ease of development, many photographers hit the road and shot images at county fairs and other public events. This exhibit is displayed in cooperation with an exhibit and tin type events scheduled at the Arts Center of the Yates County called “Cabin Fever” on Sunday, February 7th through Sun-day, March 13th. Dundee resident and tin type photographer John Coffer will participate in ex-hibiting and demonstrating his craft. Other basket making, weaving and furniture painting art-ists’ creations will also be displayed. On Saturday, March 12th, visit the Oliver House again to enjoy weaving and fiber arts demon-strations by volunteers and staff in the “From Sheep To Shawl” Exhibit room at 1 p.m. Enjoy seeing the early barn framed rug loom in action and see spinning demonstrations. Examples of several of YCHC’s oldest coverlets will be on display.

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in.” Heat is used throughout the art process on natural bees wax or resins, used alone for transparency or adhesion or with color added. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or other tools before reheating to fuse it to the previous layer. Maureen will provide guidance for proper use of equipment including brushes, color and color mixing. She will supply basic information and choices from surfaces to finishes focusing on how to achieve a smooth surface. The goal is to learn technique to control the medium.
