YCAC‘s programs are supported in part with public funds from the

New York State Council on the Arts.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the quality of

life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing

opportunities for active participation in the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop

art programs and projects; coordinate,

schedule, and publicize events; develop & main-tain physical facilities.

1 new entirely renovated building, rescued from the brink of permanent demise,

2 floors entirely dedicated to bring quality art to the community,

7 good reasons to like us on FaceBook: - because you like art in all forms - because you think that the Arts Center is a big asset to the Community

- because you want to show your support for the Center and all its volunteers and artists - because you want to be informed in a timely manner of all the new Arts Center initiatives - because you want to let your friends know about all the Center activities - because you want to have an easy way to communicate with the Arts Center and share your suggestions - because you want to have the opportunity to find new friends who enjoy art as much as you do

Your “like” is very important to us. It will be a great encouragement for the Board and all the Volunteers. The more followers we have the greater the Arts Center credibility when applying for grants.

For all of the above reasons or for others, which could be more personal, go to the Arts Center web site www.artscenteryatescounty.org and “like” us on Facebook.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Daniel Crozet, President ACYC

Third building from the left, 127 Main Street, used to be 3 stories tall with finials and arched windows and doors on all levels. Today you can see the former third story windowsills still embedded in the facade.

Day by Day: Country Living

Our second exhibit in the new YCAC gallery on Main Street, Penn Yan will

begin with a reception on Friday, August 3rd

, from 5 to 7 PM. Wine tasting will

be provided by Deep Root Vineyards. The show , Day by Day: Country Liv-

ing, will reflect the beauty and richness of the area in which we live. Along

with our YCAC member artists we will feature the work of three very accom-

plished artists – Connie Berberian, Darryl Abraham and Julianna Drumheller.

Connie Berberian is no stranger to YCAC. She has exhibited with us many

times in the past. Her work is some of our favorite watercolors and prints,

also appearing on our yearly holiday cards. Connie lives in Wellsboro, Penn-

sylvania, not far from the NY state border. She studied at Carnegie

Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, majoring in Painting and De-

sign. She has also studied with noted artists Irving Shapiro, Milford

Zornes and Stephen Quiller among numerous others who have contribut-

ed greatly to her growth as a painter. Her work has been represented in

national and international juried exhibitions, earning her signature mem-

bership in The North East Watercolor Society, the Central New York Wa-

tercolor Society and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. She has gar-

nered dozens of awards. Her passion for watercolor is due in great part

to its immediacy and luminous effects.

Darryl Abraham lives in Naples, NY. He says he is a farmer. Many of

his paintings depict the charming rural character of our area – apple

picking, barns, tractors, chickens and cows. Each tells its own story in a

unique way. His sculptural assemblages are rustic and profound. Darryl

Abraham received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Com-

monwealth University and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Uni-

versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has exhibited his work in

such prestigious venues as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian

Institute, and Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery. The United States Em-

bassy in Tokyo and the National Museum of American Art in Washing-

ton, DC, are but two of the many public and private collections which

include his work. He also heads a thriving landscape design business

and has taught classes at Monroe College in furniture making, jewelry,

sculpture and painting.

Julianna Drumheller is a native of Webster, New York. She graduated in

2003 from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor's degree in Fine

Arts. Her interest in painting and two-dimensional design combined with ce-

ramics in 2005, when she began taking pottery classes at Turk Hill Craft

School in Fairport, NY. She has been showing her ceramics since 2006 and

has work in shops and galleries in the Rochester area and in Connecticut.

Julianna’s mission is to create everyday, practical objects such as bowls,

baking dishes, plates, pitchers, vases, cups and trivets, which capture the

tranquility of a beautiful painting and bring a unique aesthetic to the table.

She currently resides with her husband in Danielson, Connecticut.

You are invited to come and see the amazing work of these artists. The opening reception is open to all. We hope you will enjoy this show which will continue until September 3, 2012 . New gallery hours include weekends.

Large Donation of Mary Rickman Art Attic Art Sale + Side Walk Sale Day = July 28

Our annual Attic Art Sale provides the funds for our Com-munity Arts Grants, which go to school classes, youth groups, seniors, etc. for art related experi-ences.

One couldn’t find a more committed supporter of arts education than the late Mary Rickman, so it is appropriate that dozens of her remaining paint-ings have been donated by her husband, Dick Rickman, for our sale. Many people who enjoyed her classes will want to take home a sentimental bargain in her memory.

Locating on Main Street will be a boon for our annual sale. We need your donations of decora-tive (or ugly) items to sell. Please bring linens, frames, mirrors, vases, occasional furniture, ugly wedding gifts which you hid in the attic, candle sticks, bric-a-brac. Downsize for a good cause. Please bring donated items to the gallery July 20 to July 27. A committee of Barbara Doyle, Mary Foster, Carol Conti, Helga Poreda, Char DiGen-naro, Carol Lipani, Willie Bilancio, Lyle Conrad and Bonnie Barney will make it all happen July 28, 9AM—3 PM. Come for a Mary Rickman painting and more. And the profit will stay in Yates County as Com-

munity Arts Grants!

Special Summer Workshop Teacher!

See Pages 8-9 for descriptions of work-shops by the very popular Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson. Because of enrollment filling so quickly for the 3-day workshop, and additional single day session has been added to accommodate more peo-ple. Her signature “paper paintings” are cre-

ated from a variety of hand painted pa-pers, meticulously torn and delicately put together to form her nationally rec-ognized and award winning works of art. A graduate of Syracuse University, Elizabeth has lived and worked in cen-tral Florida for the last 17 years. We’re happy to welcome her back to the Fin-ger Lakes region! A Brief History of 127 Main Street

Originally the site of the Yates County Bank (until 1857), the property at 127 Main Street was purchased by Mason Baldwin in 1871. In 1881 Mason Baldwin turned the land over to the president and directors of Baldwin’s Bank and the current build-ing was constructed. While the name changed, the building re-mained a bank for more than a century. At some point, the alley between the building and Lown's was roofed over to create more interior space, which was used for the bank tellers' counter. In 1960 the facade was covered in white brick in an attempt to "modernize" the appearance. The brick was removed to reveal the original facade in 1984, when Norstar Bank acquired the building. The manager of Norstar's Main Street office, Robert Maxwell, was an active member of the Penn Van community and the cre-ator of the winter "Starshine" festival in downtown Penn Van. His five year tenure as Norstar Bank manager ended in 1989 after his untimely passing at age 54. In 1991, Norstar donated the building to the Village of Penn Van with the provision that the building be known as "the Maxwell Building" and that the Village keep and use the building for at least five years. " The former bank building was used as county court offices for almost 25 years. The Maxwell Building was used by the village as office and court space until village operations were con-solidated in the new Elm Street offices. After standing vacant for a number of years, the Village Trustees voted in 2010 to sell the Maxwell building, which was purchased by the Arts Center. Arts Center volunteers have worked for almost two years to plan, coordinate and fund a complete renova-

tion of the 130 year old building which included major structural and sys-tems improvements as well as cosmetic interior and exterior changes. We were ably helped in this effort by architect Rob Wolfe and Paul Brown Con-tracting and a great number of generous donors and volunteers. Our capital campaign has passed the mid-point, and continues toward our goal of $85,000...a small portion of the recent costs incurred restoring this historic building. Please make a donation to express your support.

The important words on our new sign are the BIG ones: Arts Center. We have been call-ing ourselves “Yates County Arts Center”, but elected to file a dba to rearrange that title to emphasize our mission: Arts Center of Yates County.

Note the change in web and e-mail addresses (back page), although the old ones will redirect you to us. And we’ve moved up significantly in alphabetical listings!

Does Something Look Different?

First Annual Arts Center’s Bed and Breakfast Tour Made Almost $2000

Our first annual Bed and Breakfast Tour, Satur-day, May 5, was a big success! We had over 70 participants on a bright sunny day. Special thanks go to the five hosts and hostesses of the participating B&Bs: Llewellyn Lafford and Laurel O’Donnell of La Belle Vie, Cliff and Michele Orr of The Fox Inn, Cindy DeLano and Casey Kow-alski at Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, Chuck and Gerry France of 1897 Beekman House in Dundee and Barbara and Bob Schiesser of Sun-rise Landing on Seneca Lake. We’re so grateful that they agreed to participate in this initial en-deavor, braving possible complications like weather, the uncertain number of participants and whether they would have guests that week-end (they all did). We’re also appreciative of our five featured artists, Fran Bleik, Ginny Deneka, Fred Brockway, Monica Sommerville and Llewel-lyn Lafford, who spent the day showing their work, chatting with the guests, and in some cas-es, even answering questions about the B&B! Many thanks as well to Joan Belles and the doz-en or so docents who helped out at each B&B, allowing the owners ample opportunity to visit with the tour guests.

A highlight of the B&B Tour was the raffle, which

was the chance to win a two nights’ stay at any of the Tour B&Bs. The lucky person is Mary Heinonen, who chose 1897 Beekman House. Mary said she is a “Dundee girl,” loved talking with Gerry and Chuck France and even had the opportunity to meet another Tour guest, Isadora Beekman, granddaughter of the original owner of the historic home.

We are thankful to all who helped support the Arts Center at such an exciting time, as we start the summer in our new Main Street home. The new facility will provide us with an even better opportunity to be the premier mul-ti-arts center of our region, striving to enrich the quality of life for Finger Lakes residents, artists and visitors by providing opportunities for active participation in the arts. We look forward to seeing you there! Kris Packard, Co-Chair

Tuesday, July 10, 9AM, PYAG members and friends are invited to paint at Grace Gardens, An-gus Road, off Route 14 north of Fox Run Vine-yards. The daylily show garden should be at its peak.

Wednesday, August 15, at 7 PM at the Arts Cen-ter, will be Four Stages to Radiant Color - a presentation by Fran Bliek - details the principles taught at Susan Sarback's "School of Light & Col-or" and at her Plein Air Workshops. Susan, a for-mer student of Henry Hensche at the Cape Cod School of Art, has devised methods of teaching impressionistic principles to her students. Fran has been a student of Sarback's and has her permis-sion to pass on these principles to other artists.

The Cape Cod School of Art was founded by Charles Hawthorne in 1899. Hawthorne trained his eyes to see and paint color as Monet had. The Cape Cod School of Art was the first outdoor summer school for figure painting and grew into one of the nation's leading art schools. Henry Hensche, one of Hawthorne's stu-dents, continued to teach Hawthorne's principles after his death. Susan Sarback, a student of Hensche, con-tinues teaching these principles at her school in Fair Oaks, CA as well as Art Centers in Florida and North Carolina.

Fran will detail the Four Stages to Radiant Color along with some principles of plein air painting and sugges-tions to help you paint like the Impressionists.

Guests and new members are always welcome. PYAG exists to encourage all artistic endeavors. If you wish to join, please bring 3 examples of your work to a meeting for the group to admire as a way of introducing yourself.

Dues are Active Member $15 , Associate Member (not displaying art) $10. Send 2012 PYAG dues to Sally Thomas, 3598 Sid White Rd., Keuka Park, NY 14478.

Sunny Point busy:

Sunny Point’s schedule is filled for the summer with 2 artists in residence, a host residency, innovative art and music classes and workshops. We will have na-tionally and internationally recognized artists staying at Sunny Point this summer and classes for children and adults.

For the past 3 years, the Sunny Point Committee has done a great job in making Sunny Point truly the art center on the lake - our Sundays at Sunny Point play-ing a major role! Sadly however, it has been decided

that we will not hold Sundays at Sunny Point this sum-mer. We originally held planning sessions for 3 sepa-rate Sundays this summer, but we experienced sever-al date changes, difficulty in recruiting artists, donors and volunteers. The committee will reconvene in Sep-tember to discuss our successes, revisit our vision for Sunny Point and create policies and procedures to support this vision for 2013. If you have any sugges-tions or ideas please contact Kris Pearson the YCAC director at: [email protected].
