It was an extremely hot day and being in the water was definitely the place to be! Well done to all those students who tried their hardest in the races and novelty events. School Plan Update: Strategic Direction 1 – Quality Teaching & Learning As part of our 2018-2020 School Plan, Yates Avenue PS is focused on implementing teaching and learning programs which address the speech, language and communication needs of our students. This year, a speech pathologist from Learning Links will be at Yates every Thursday to support targeted students. Over the coming weeks, students will be identified who would benefit from receiving speech therapy screening and/or intervention. As part of this service, these children will be observed to identify areas that require further support and they may receive some individual or group assistance. This service is free of charge to families, with the school covering the cost of all services provided while the students are on school grounds. A permission note with more details was sent home this week to selected students. Parent Information Mornings Tuesday 19th– Thursday 21 st February: 8.20 - 9.00am Parents are invited to our morning information sessions next week. Details of classes and times are included in the Term 1 calendar and on the accompanying note. At these meetings, teachers will provide details of class routines, homework, student expectations and curriculum information for 2019. We encourage all parents to attend. School Uniform – Wearing a School Hat Walking around the school this week, I have been delighted to see the high standard of school uniform worn by students. However, there are still a number of children wearing hats which are not part of the school uniform. Being learners who are safe at Yates means that we wear the school hat at all times. Our new school hat is on sale in the uniform shop on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8.30am. The hat has an embroidered school logo and an adjustable cord at the top. 2019 Classes We have finally settled on student numbers for 2019 and we can start the year with 130 learners who are safe, respectful and responsible, shared between 6 mainstream classes. In addition, we have 2 Multi-categorical classes and 2 Early Intervention classes in the support unit, and 2 classes in the Preschool. Have a great week David MacSporran Principal WHAT’S DUE? School Plan Update: Strategic Direction 1 – Quality Teaching & Learning As part of our 2018-2020 School Plan, Yates Avenue PS is focused on implementing teaching and learning programs which address the speech, language and communication needs of our students.

This year, a speech pathologist from Learning Links will be at Yates every Thursday to support targeted students. As part of this service, these children will be observed to identify areas that require further support and they may receive some individual or group assistance.

This service is free of charge to families, with the school covering the cost of all services provided while the students are on school grounds. A permission note with more details was sent home this week to selected students.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL CONT…… Department of Education – School Community Charter The Department of Education has recently released its School Community Charter, which outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools. A hard copy of the charter is being sent home today. See below for a summary of the main points:

Positive environments It is important that our NSW public schools are positive environments and that parents and carers are kept informed of students’ progress and school announcements. Parents and carers can expect: to be welcomed into our schools to work in

partnership to promote student learning. communication from school staff will be timely,

polite and informative. professional relationships with school staff are

based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect.

to be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity.

Communicating with our schools Our staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. Please remember that while our staff are in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately. Our schools will make sure that written communication is appropriate, fair and easy to read. We encourage you to use social media appropriately to stay up-to-date with events in the school.

Respectful communication is a right In all workplaces people have the right to feel respected. Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities. To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police.

Subway Sandwich Lunch Orders – Flexischools The P and C have organised for students to order Subway sandwiches every Friday, starting 15th February. There will be a limited menu and sandwiches (6 inch only) will cost $6. They will be prepared at Subway, Carlingford and delivered to the school by Uber Eats, in time for the 11.15am lunch break. Payment can only be made using the Flexischools app., once you have registered. Unfortunately, the office and school website cannot accept any payments for lunch orders. The cut off time for orders will be Thursday at 12pm.

‘Green Team’ – Environmental Education

Engaging children in environmental education is an important part of the school curriculum and one we take seriously here in the beautiful surrounds of Yates Avenue PS. Next week, we will be starting the ‘The Green Team’ for 2019 - a student environmental group involving 2-3 interested students per class. The team will be planting vegetables and maintaining the existing gardens, as well as recycling, composting and worm farming.

SPORTS NEWS Summer PSSA Summer PSSA will be commencing Friday, 22nd February (Week 4). We had an overwhelming amount of students vote for Newcombeball this year,to be played in Term 1 and Term 4 at Doyle Ground, North Parramatta. Notes have been sent home today with information about payment and a player Code of Conduct. Please read through the player Code of Conduct together with your child and have it signed and returned to school. If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to speak to Miss Salvagio. We look forward to a great season of Newcombeball!

P AND C NEWS ‘Meet and Greet’ – Wednesday, 20th February The P&C Association is having a ‘Meet and Greet’ on Wednesday, 20th February, from 8:30 to 9:20 am. New parents to the school are welcomed to join us at the picnic tables near the front office building to meet the current members of the P&C Association here at Yates. You will find out what we are about and how you could assist running activities at this wonderful school. Annual General Meeting A friendly reminder that the AGM is being held on the Monday, 25th February at 7pm in the staff room. Uniform Shop The uniform shop is open on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8.30-9.00am. COMMUNITY BREAKFAST Yesterday we started our free community breakfast for 2019 and it was a huge success! The students and parents enjoyed toasted muffins, fresh fruit, eggs, cereal and juice. This will continue every Tuesday morning from 8:30am. A big thank you to Mrs Dyball for coordinating the breakfast, and also to the many teachers who helped with preparation and serving.

Last Friday, Yates Avenue had their annual swimming carnival! It was a perfect day for it, with the sun shining and luckily not a cloud in sight. All students had a great time racing in butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle or backstroke or racing in the novelty pool! Our House Captains did a great job at their first event, getting the crowds roaring during their war cries and cheering on all competitors! Our parent vs teacher race was a great success, taken out by the incredibly fast Mr Brown.

Thank you to all the attending teachers, Mr McNeilly, Mrs Dowell, Miss Richards and Mr MacSporran for their assistance prior to the day and for their hard work on the day. A very special thank you to all our parents and families who came to support their children and to Mrs Taylor, and Mr and Mrs Baikie who helped with timing.

Elizabeth Salvagio Sports Organiser FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS A very warm welcome to all school families including our new Kindergarten students. It has been wonderful to see all K-2 students settle into their new classes and begin the learning programs for 2018. All students are working hard to be safe, respectful and responsible learners. We look forward to welcoming all families at the morning information sessions next week where you will be able to learn about the routines and programs that your child will engage in. Labelling of Items A reminder to please label ALL your child’s belongings, especially hats, school bags and food containers.
