“Every Riven Thing”
God goes, belonging to every riven thing he’s made sing his being simply by being the thing it is: stone and tree and sky, man who sees and sings and wonders why God goes. Belonging to every riven thing he’s made, means a storm of peace. Think of the atoms inside the stone. Think of the man who sits alone trying to will himself into a stillness where God goes belong. To every riven thing he’s made there is given one shade shaped exactly to the thing itself: under the tree a darker tree; under the man the only man to see God goes belonging to every riven thing. He’s made the things that bring him near, made the mind that makes him go. A part of what man knows, apart from what man knows, God goes belonging to every riven thing he’s made.
Christopher Wiman (b.1966)
* * * * * This poet, Christopher Wiman, was interviewed last Sunday on Krista Tippet’s “On Being” program on WNYC. He read this poem on the air and it struck a chord for me. A “riven thing” is something broken. Indeed God stands by His creation, especially the parts most distressed and that primarily means us. God’s ongoing “belonging” is His constant love, never withdrawn nor diluted no matter the mess we make of our lives. The whole broken created order and especially we humans are immersed in God’s limitless ocean of mercy to paraphrase Pope Francis. We can boast of our riveness, as St. Paul says, because when we are weak we are strong. Jesus came to fix us. Just let Him have His way with you!

EMMAUS MINISTRY FOR GRIEVING PARENTS
CHURCH OF THE MAGDALENE 525 Bedford Road, Pocantical Hills, Tarrytown
Saturday, February 24th
To meet the spiritual needs of parents whose children of any age have died by any cause-no matter how long ago, the Family Life Office of the Archdiocese of NY offers this ministry program providing spiritual retreats for grieving parents, offered by grieving parents.
Cost $25 per person, $40 per couple To register or for more information contact Sue DiSisto, Parenting and Family Life Education at 646-794-3191,
Progress Reports have been distributed to the students in our Religious Education Program. We want to congratulate all of our children on their achievements! We stress the importance of attending Mass. Remember that the closest way we can get to Jesus on this side of Heaven is to receive Him in the Eucharist! We ask for your prayers for our second grade students. They are now in the immediate preparation for the beautiful Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are focusing on the parables of the Lost Sheep and the Prodigal Son. The children are working very hard on their prayers, songs, and studies. The Sacrament of First Reconciliation will take place the week of February 5, 2018. The children will arrive in the classroom at the regular class time and the parents and families will gather in the church. We will participate in a Prayer Service followed by individual confessions for both the students and their parents. We will conclude with a Celebration in the Social Hall. We look forward to the celebration of God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. Maria Lamorgese, Director Phone 914-769-3297 ext. 1 [email protected]

As always the Music Ministry thanks you for your participation in the music of our liturgies. Singing by the congregation is not an afterthought, but is instead vital to worship. Prayerful singing invites and recognizes the presence of Christ in each celebration, and our music programs each week are designed to accompany, and hopefully, enhance, your prayers through the lyrics of each hymn. This year the church calendar gives us five Sundays of Ordinary Time before Lent begins. During these Sundays the liturgies will have themes of light, and darkness, hope and love, and we use this opportunity to include some of your favorite hymns as well as to introduce some new selections from our hymnal. We have also changed the Gloria and the mass setting from those used during the Christmas season. The Gloria is #859 in the hymnal. It was selected by our Junior Choir who find it fun to sing! We hope you agree with them. This Glory to God was written by Randall DeBruyn as part of his mass setting titled The Mass of the Resurrection. This setting was written with the intention of lifting the voices of the congregation to sing of their salvation. Randall DeBruyn studied music at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He graduated with a PHD in Musical Arts in Composition and Theory from the University of Illinois in 1975. In addition to this mass setting, his compositions titled In Perfect Charity and How Lovely is Your Dwelling Place are among the hymns we use throughout the year. The new mass setting is titled Mass of Christ the Savior and was written by Dan Schutte. We will begin with the Holy listed as #921 in our hymnal. Dan Schutte is one of the best known Catholic composers. He was born in Wisconsin and entered the Jesuit order after high school but left in 1986. His compositions include City of God, Here I Am Lord, and Table of Plenty. Dan explained his inspiration for this mass setting as follows: “I wanted the music to be accessible to all those gathered for worship, I wanted the melodies to quickly and easily become like an old friend. My inspiration came from thinking of a typical community celebrating the Eucharist on Sunday. Then I imagined Christ the Savior standing there with us, praying with us, singing with us, proclaiming the scripture with us, giving thanks with us, and finally sharing the meal of His own body and blood with us. The title Mass of Christ the Savior seemed most appropriate.” We encourage and look forward to your continued participation as we sing and celebrate God’s word together.
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Jonah set out for Ninevah as God asked and told the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days. The peo-ple believed him and repented from their evil ways. God did not destroy their city, showing his mercy for those who see the evil of their ways and correct it. Second Reading: I Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul advises the Corinthians that their world is changing, so they should not take their daily trials too seriously. We should remember that the problems of everyday living will not last forever, but the eternal life God promises us will. Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus observes Simon and Andrew where they are fishing and tells them to come with him and become “fishers of men.” They abandon their nets without hesitation to follow him. Next he calls James and his brother John, who also leave what they are doing and follow him without question.
