Pastor’s Note I came across this poem on my recent trip to Central Europe. I took a day trip from Prague to Terezin to visit the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt. Terezin was holding camp for Jews before they were deported to the death camps. It was also a bogus “show camp” that the Nazis opened for inspection by the Red Cross. The museum had a display of children’s poetry from the camp. 150,000 children passed through Terezin; only 100 survived. The poem “The Garden” was written by Frantisek Bass. It is a bittersweet piece by a sadly astute young man who, unlike many others, was not fooled by the contrived Nazi camouflage of Theresienstadt. He knew his fate. The Nazi horror is a constant reminder where hatred and racism can lead — even in the most advanced nation at the time and not that long ago. Many children today are living under similarly inhuman conditions. As Christians we loudly decry ever assault on human life and rights, which are most stark and repulsive when perpetrated on children. In our day children die each day in rafts on the high seas fleeing war and famine. They are forced into slavery and prostitution and para murderous militias. In the developing world many are left to drink polluted water. Thousands are killed outright in the name of ideology and misguided religious fervor. We do what we can to stand up for human dignity and justice. Frantisek Bass would be an old man today had he survived the Nazi Holocaust. Many children under siege today will also never have the chance to grow old.

Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

“The Garden”

A little garden Fragrant and full of roses,

The path is narrow And a little boy walks along it.

A little boy, a sweet boy,

Like that growing blossom. When the blossom comes to bloom

The little boy will be no more.

POSTCARDS FROM A NAVY CHAPLAIN Fr. Joseph Scordo, OP

“I wrote this little book to share my memories on two

deployments with the 26th MEU. My hope is that you will enjoy my stories and get a

better idea of what goes on when a Navy/Marine Corps team deploys.

And, perhaps you will gain some insight into my being extremely proud of our men and women in uniform.”

On Saturday, August 13th, Fr. Scordo, OP, will be signing copies of his book Postcards from a Navy Chaplain, after the 5:15pm Mass at Holy Innocents and before the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, August 14th. All profits of this book will go to supporting repairs and maintenance of the 100-year old Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC - home of Fr. Scordo, and 80 other friars devoted to the ministry of faith. Please visit Fr. Scordo’s website: josephscordo-op.org

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS AND CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA

Next weekend there will be a collection for both the Catholic Home Missions and the Church in Latin America. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, because educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. The Church in Latin America. Your gifts to the collection will fund catechesis, pastoral programs, marriage and family life projects, seminarian education, and many other necessary programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. By funding these programs, the support you give today will provide seeds to grow the faith for years to come. Your generous support is greatly appreciated.

This weekend and next Joe will be away on a much deserved vacation. While he is away, the music for our liturgies will be led by Becki Advocate. Becki is a classically trained double bassist, but also plays, teaches and enjoys the piano. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music at Suny Purchase, and her Master’s Degree in Musical Performance from the Aaron Copeland School of Music at CUNY Queens, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Becki and her husband live in nearby Katonah and she is currently working as the organist for the Trinity Boscobel United Methodist Church in Buchanan, NY. She has been a sub for us at Holy Innocents many times. For those of you who may be interested in piano or double bass, Becki gives lessons in both instruments to adults and school aged children. She will provide the lesson in your home. For more information you can contact Becki directly at [email protected] The Music Ministry is very grateful to having Becki with us these next two weekends, and we hope you will join us in welcoming her here at Holy Innocents.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23: "Vanity of vanities." Sometimes we may work for wealth, wisdom and knowledge only to discover that it has been left for someone who did not toil for it. The offering of our work, fatigue and pain, if not for God, can also be a kind of vanity. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11: Paul urges us to seek what is good and from God, encouraging us to put our minds on the spiritual. He reminds us that, as Christians, we have died with Christ and are hidden with Christ until his glory is once again revealed. We are all one in Christ. Gospel: Luke 12:13-21: On being requested to settle a question of inheritance, Jesus heeds us to beware of all covetousness because our life does not consist on the wealth of possessions. Through the lesson of a parable Jesus reinforces this teaching, explaining that those who store up the treasures of wealth and possessions are not the richest in God's eyes.

POPE FRANCIS’ TOP 10 SECRETS OF HAPPINESS

1. “Live and let live.” Everyone should be guided by this principle. “Move forward and let others do the same.” 2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” He said, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.” 3. “Proceed calmly” in life. Like a pool of water, still moving—to have “the ability to move with kind-ness and humility, a calmness of life.” 4. “A healthy sense of leisure.” Consumerism has brought us anxiety and stress,” causing people to lose a “healthy culture of leisure.” Their time is “swallowed up,” so people can’t share it with anyone. 5. Sunday should be a holiday. Workers should have Sundays off because “Sunday is for family.” 6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. “It’s not enough to give them food,” he said. “Dignity is given to you when you can bring food home,” from one’s own labor. 7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation “is one of the biggest challenges we have,” he said. 8. Stop being negative. “Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem” 9. Don’t proselytize; respect other’s beliefs. “The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing,” the Pope said. 10. Work for peace. “We are living in a time of many wars.” Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quite,….peace is always pro-active.
