The retired farmer from Hikurangi has spent most of his life carving kauri gum after falling in love with the precious resin as a 10-year-old.

From that youthful moment, Tom started collecting gum at every opportunity but did not start to carve the resin until after he returned from the Second World War. The carving, melting and sculpting all took time and patience on the part of the self-taught artisan, who also turns his own wood and makes furniture.

Toms huge collection of gum crafts can be seen at Jack Morgan museum in Hukerenui where Tom farmed, the Kauri Museum, Whangarei Museum and Hikurangi Museum. He also has a house full of crafts.

I polished my rst piece of gum when I came back from the war, said Tom. There was gum everywhere at that stage we even managed to sell some of it.

His farm was littered with kauri tree stumps and logs and when the land was cleared, gum was scattered throughout the area.

After I nd or buy a piece of gum, I sit it on the kitchen bench and just stare at it. I study it until I come up with an idea.

The Tom Potter collection at Dargaville Museum includes an imitation Bible, spheres and replica monuments from New Zealand and overseas. Tom said although his eyesight is failing him, he still practises his art when he can.

Mistakes in the Kaipara District Councils 20112012 Annual Plan adding up to more than $4 million are to be partly paid for with another $2.5 million in borrowings, and a signi cant district rates rise has been signalled.

The series of errors and omissions have been identi ed following a promised nancial review of the councils books and cover a number of areas.

Recently appointed council chief executive, Steve Ruru, who succeeded former CEO, Jack McKerchar, said there were a number of factors involved.

The big issues which have contributed to the de cit include

More debt sparks rates rise signalan anticipated $1.2 million of receivable interest which was never realistic, and consequently was not received, Mr Ruru said.

Approximately $2.5 million was missed out of the Annual Plan. An example of this is the grant to the Cinema Trust which was agreed to but never included. Stormwater targeted rates of some $450,000 were budgeted for but not levied or set.

To reduce the impact of these errors council hasmoved to make a number of operational savings and reducecapital expenditure where possible. While the savings that have been made are sizeable it has not been possible tocompletely offset the errors made and hence the need for increased borrowing. continued on page 3 . . .

Maungaturotos Otamatea Repertory Theatre is gearing up for the 50th celebrations of ORT becoming an incorporated society. The theatre itself was built in 1982 and opened by then Governor General, the Hon Sir David Beattie.

ORT as it is known today grew out of the Paparoa Drama Club, the Maungaturoto Entertainment Group and the Otamatea Repertory Society, which eventually all came together under one umbrella. For half a century ORT has provided a training ground for many talented performers and provided sophisticated entertainment for hundreds of people.

Dennise Brownlie, who is organising the celebrations with Brian Dent, says committee members thought the 50 year mark was a really good excuse to have a party.

Well be holding the celebration on Waitangi weekend February 4 and 5, said Dennise.

ORT to celebrate 50 yearsOn the Saturday, well have the registration

in the morning, a lunch and fun things in the afternoon, including tours of the theatre because a lot of things have changed. In the evening well be having a gala dinner at the Country Club.

Sunday will start with a brunch, followed by a concert in the afternoon, which is when everyone gets a chance to jump up and do an item. After that well close, giving everyone a chance to catch up and travel home on the Monday.

Were looking for anyone who has ever had anything to do with the theatre to come along.

Dennise is also writing a book, which will be available for purchase during the weekend. It will include the funny moments, lots of photos, history and memories. For more information, people can visit the website http://ort.org.nz.

The mistakes were found after a new management team was appointed late last year.

Mayor Neil Tiller said that while it was disappointing that errors of this magnitude were made, council is pleased that staff are now providing full nancial reports that provide a clear understanding of our nancial challenges.

He added that rates in Kaipara had been kept arti cially low for a number of years.

It is clear that rates will need to be increased signi cantly to enable council to move forward instead of backwards as it has been doing.

We will be looking to get community input on the options for addressing these issues as part of the upcoming 2012/2022 Ten Year Plan consultation process.

The yearly event is the holy grail of exhibitions and has been a launching pad for some of the worlds most well known brands.

Michelle Huertas is one of only 700 young designers and design students worldwide to be selected by Salone Satellite to exhibit her debut Trhaus brand in April.

The fair is attended by over 280,000 people every year, including designers, manufacturers, marketing managers, buyers and international media.

Salone Satellite was set up by Cosmit, who are the people that run the furniture fair, as a way to be able to display up and coming designers. Applicants must be under 35 years and their product needs to be new and unavailable on the market a selection panel then chooses designers that they deem appropriate, explained Michelle.

Michelle started working professionally as a designer four years ago and after settling in Ruawai earlier this year, says she draws her inspiration from nature and the environment. Her company name, Trhaus, comes from Michelles vision for her brand sustainable, ethical and adventurous yet still very much a part of the 21st century. Trhaus is also the letters of Michelles surname rearranged and the pronunciation, treehouse, re ects the companys creed.

    From Ruawai to Milan

My debut range was designed here, so it didnt exist until April. It is such a stimulating environment to be here, everything is so raw and bright. Nature is in its element in Northland and everything is so vibrant and thats inspiring, it gives energy.

Therell be two Trhaus ranges exhibited in Milan, the Check and Check Mate stool and the K Light and K Stools, which have a knitted element to them and thats very much a NZ inspiration.

Michelle designs her range, which is sent to her laser cutter, it is then returned to Michelle and all the nishing is done by hand, including the knitting.

In the long term, Michelle says she would like to involve other local people and utilise local talent and bres. She is also keen to nd a laser cutter in the Kaipara.

Through Salone Satellite, Michelle is able to pay reduced stall fees at the Milan Furniture Fair but this is still a cost of $6,000 plus travelling costs. She is currently seeking sponsorship, grants and donations.

The beach beatDargaville Police Community Constable Ian Anderson will be hitting

the hot spots this summer patrolling Kauri Coast beaches and the iconic Kai Iwi Lakes.

The beach beat got underway last week and will continue for several weeks in an effort to keep popular spots safe for residents and summer visitors.

This is the third year that we have been patrolling hot spots, said Constable Anderson. Last year, I couldnt go out as much but this year Ill be out for four to ve hours a day, every day.

Ian said his role as a community constable seems to ow but essentially it is about getting out there, being seen and talking to members of the public.

In recent years there has been concern raised about vehicle safety on beaches, particularly motorbikes. Among the concern from beach-goers is; drivers failing to observe speed limits, unsupervised children on motorbikes and quads, and riding without helmets, dangerous driving and noisy inconsiderate behaviour.

    Tapping into tourismby Paul Campbell

It is tourist time for many parts of New Zealand, and a holiday trip down through Rotorua has served to illustrate the rather stark contrast that exists between the Kaipara, literally on Aucklands doorstep, and places further a eld that are trapping the lions share of thetourism dollar.

It poses the question of just why this should be?After all, the Kaipara region is a mere hour-and-a-half or so from

Auckland. But then, it is sparsely catered for in terms of accommodation. There are delightful B and Bs and well-served camping grounds, with an assortment of hotels and motels.

But the overriding puzzle for me is the fact that we have the biggest harbour in the southern hemisphere and beaches to rival anything in the world along the west coast. By comparison with the shore of Lake Rotorua, Tarawera, and similar spots some three hours from Auckland, these are largely deserted except for domestic visitors by and large who have established the north as their preferred holiday spot, and some adventurous camper-vanners.

But overall, the contrast between our region and say, Rotorua, on the tourism front is profound.

Sit at a coffee shop on the shores of Lake Rotorua and watch the traf c, listen to a dozen languages from passers-by and note the wide variety of accommodation from budget to luxury and some of the reasons why become apparent. Not the least of these is the highly visible presence of local government.

The Rotorua District Council is very hands on. Of course it is also a matter of infrastructure. The thermal wonderland has a huge part to play although a whiff of sulphur fumes did little to impress my fellow travellers, old friends from Hong Kong.

But the key element of their stay around the lakes was a shing trip.

Four hours on a well-appointed lake catamaran, a pleasant picnic lunch, and two trout on the line only one landed was the pinnacle point of their holiday.

The day alone was worth the airfares and all the travel, said my friend Henry.

I could not help then extolling the virtues of the Kaipara, with a few stories about casual shing excursions and the quota catches we have enjoyed on our expansive harbour.

Heck why didnt we visit you up there? was his reply.

It is a vexing question. We are so close to Auckland, we have a magni cent harbour, we have a world-beating attraction in The Kauri Museum among many other varied attractions. We have spectacular scenery and a magni cent coastline.

One cant help thinking that with a little more entrepreneurial spirit, Kaipara could tap more into the international visitor market.

But sometimes, it is all about perception and there is nothing perhaps more powerful than word of mouth.

To this end, a couple who are regular visitors to Kaipara and Northland have gone to the internet to spread the word on their favourite destination.

Take a look at their You Tube offering at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OojOgcZpLpA.

Its worth the time to enter in the characters, and it might inspire more local efforts to get Kaipara on the world-wide tourist map.

Hong Kong visitors Henry and Rita Parwani believedthat a days fishing alone was worth all the travel and air fares

For Pahi waterside resident, Tony Louisson, Christmas brought a special gift, as he went from creakingly slow and unreliable dial-up internet to high speed wireless broadband in the space of an hour or so.

It was marvellous, he said. Not only could I peruse the newspapers on-line in the holidays and check out the real-time weather, I was able to amaze my wife, Dene, with live pictures of a panda bear in China.

His sentiments have been echoed by a number of residents on the eastern side of the Pahi peninsula who have signed up with wireless broadband provider, Uber Group.

The Whangarei-based company has extended its coverage in Kaipara with a new transmitter at Whakapirau, beaming into an area at Pahi that was formerly only connected by unstable copper-wire to terrestrial internet providers.

Uber Group covers Northland from Te Kao to Warkworth and Snells Beach from over 100 transmission sites, said managing director, Hayden Simon. The new transmission site provides coverage on the eastern side of Pahi in areas where it hasnt been available before.

Local resident, Ralph Williams, says his new service really pops and zzes. Its great, with excellent speeds. I was also impressed when they said that while they hoped to have it in by Christmas, they then duly delivered before the holiday break.

    A great Christmas present

The weather was anything but tropical but that didnt stop about 50 people turning up to Glinks Gully on the rst of January for the annual Glinks Gully New Years Family Open Sports Day.

With high seas, temperatures ranging between 17 and 21 degrees and winds getting up to seven kilometres an hour, event organiser Ronnie Antonio watched the preceding weather carefully to see if the event could go ahead.

I was rapt with the turnout considering the weather, said Ronnie. While attendance was down, everybody got involved and had a good time.

On the day, organisers managed to get through all of the planned activities.

Hayley Gilcrest won the 100 metre Tuatua Cup, Ethan Johnstone, took the 120 metre Toheroa Cup, Sue Botica was rst in the senior Tuatua Cup and Andrew Wheeler triumphed in the Senior Toheroa Cup.

Miss Glinks Gully was a popular event and Ronnie said two better people couldnt have been picked. Erin Dwyer was named Senior Miss Glinks Gully while Emma Adams was named Junior Miss Glinks Gully.

I was really rapt with the choices for Miss Glinks Gully, added Ronnie. Both girls have a lot to do with Glinks Gully and are always joining in to help.

All activities on the day were pushed through about thirty minutes faster than normal and Ronnie said hes looking forward to next years event.

The Kaiparas unseasonal weather during the festive season created trying circumstances for many holiday makers and threatened the viability of annual events. Despite this, the Mangawhai Gala triumphed against all odds.

It went extremely well but it was touch and go with the weather, said gala co-ordinator, John Dickie. Nonetheless, the Domain Committee is very pleased with the day.

If it had been the day before or the day after it would have been very dif cult if it had been two days earlier it would have been an unmitigated disaster. Because of the rain and windy conditions we had the pull-out tractor ready but it was used less than 10 times!

The Domain Committee extends a special thanks to the attendees, stallholders and event providers for their patience and understanding.

As always, the support of the team of over 100 volunteers and the donations and sponsorship from local businesses is much appreciated, as is the public for attending the gala. Our attendance gures are based on estimates from entrance fees either per carload or per family and we think about 5,5006,000 came through.

    Mangawhai gala triumphsby Joanne Speechly

Stallholder bookings for 2012 was just over 200 and all but about 15 turned up despite the weather. The number of events and rides was also up from previous years.

Nett pro ts for the day were slightly up on last year, which John said is extremely pleasing. Funds raised will represent about 75 per cent of the domains annual operating, maintenance and minor capital improvement expenses for the community-owned facility.

Were still getting over this years event but preparations are already underway for next year and we are accommodating suggestions from the public and stallholders alike.

The committees triple policy is to give the public a good day, make money for the facility and enable stallholders and event providers to have a pro table day. We think we continue to achieve all three but we always want to do better next time.

John advises that prospective stallholders should get in early and book their place now.

For more information and stallholder bookings visit https://sites.google.com/site/mangawhaidomain/home/gd.

Enthusiasts restore the classicsThe Dargaville contingent of Northland

Vintage Car Club is a passionate bunch of car enthusiasts who gather monthly to share their trials, triumphs and news. The motor-minded group also organise monthly runs, much to the delight of onlookers.

Basically were a bunch of enthusiastic oldies, said George Tier, who chairs the local meetings.

Some of us have been interested in vintage cars since the early 1960s and weve just added

new members as they come along. We have about 20 people at our meeting, including members and their wives. The women folk play a big part and place quite a lot of importance on the social element of our group.

We all own old cars some of us far too many and Im included in that, with four old cars and a couple of old motorbikes.

George is a former motor mechanic but says mechanical expertise is not essential to appreciating old cars. However, all

of Georges four cars are roadworthy and his 1930 Buick is currently up for sale.

Ive restored a number of cars over the years and quite a number of them have been what youd call basket cases.

George concludes that the Dargaville vintage car group is also about old fools having fun however, new members of any age are welcome as long as they have a passion for classic vehicles. People can contact George on 09 439 8911.

Darren OConnor is loving the change of pace and the (usually) sunny weather of Ruawai, the town hes adopted as his home after emigrating to New Zealand six years ago. And while his experiences in the auto trade in his native Great Britain have provided a wealth of knowledge and expertise, the friendly local mechanic is pleased to nally have his own workshop and business in the Kaipara.

Starting from this week, Darren takes over from Y-Not Autos, rebranding the site as Ruawai Auto Services. But while the name may be new, many locals will already know the quality of Darrens work hes been busy for the last two years as a mobile mechanic, getting all over the district in his van to keep Kaipara locals moving!

Hes also served a tenure with the well-known Dargaville Ford team, as well as repairing quads and motorcycles for the rural community.

In fact, if it has an engine you can be sure that this well-rounded mechanic has the skills and know-how to get it running and keep it running smoothly! After all, hes been working on all kinds of motors for the last 25 years.
