The proposed catch reduction in the east coast’s Snapper Fishery 1, which runs from East Cape to Cape Reinga, could mean the catch limit of nine could be reduced to as few as three.

Former fisheries inspector, Doug Carter, says east coast recreational fishers could simply come into Snapper Fishery 8, which runs from Cape Reinga to Taranaki, where the daily bag limit will remain at nine.

There has been an outcry over the proposed cuts from recreational fishers and the recreational marine industry including retailers, service agents and tourism operators.

Only days remain for their voices to be heard. Submissions on the cuts close next week — on August 23.

Other options in the government proposal include lifting the size limit for snapper from 27cm to up to 36cm.

“These changes could happen as soon as October and it will see a major increase in people fishing the Kaipara Harbour and coast. In some ways, you can’t blame them, as fishing in Zone 1 for three or four fish will be completely pointless. The expected influx of recreational fishing will impact badly.

He says beaches will also suffer from increased traffic which will affect flora and fauna and importantly, the toheroa.

p Debbie Hastie, Penny Diamond, Euan Hastie and Rob Hastie, make up the winning team of the Kaiwaka Sports Association quiz night. A dozen teams nutted their way through questions on geography, famous faces, general knowledge and more with team Coswecan coming out victorious. The quiz included a local knowledge section highlighting facts such as an alleged lion spotting in 2008 and Mark Ottaway being the driving force behind Kaiwaka being known as the ‘little town of lights’. Proceeds from the evening go towards the sports association.

p Band, Femme Fatale, played at the Fetish and Masquerade Ball at the Funky Fish Cafe and Bar recently. “There wasn’t a huge crowd but everyone that came had a mighty time,” says proprietor, Beth Kelliher. The night was complemented by a fire show performed by Circus Kumarani and the Northern Dolls burlesque cabaret dancers who are travelling Northland on tour. They will be performing at the Dargaville Little Theatre on August 24.

p Around 60 people enjoyed the smells and sights of spring at the Ruawai Garden Club camellia display held at the memorial hall. Te Kopuru residents, Mary and Graeme Kidd are regulars and club secretary Noeleen Gatehouse said, “they support us every year.” The displays were originally set up by the late Betty Wallace, and the garden club paid tribute to her by showcasing camellias which still bloom in her garden. Twenty members of the club will travel to Auckland on August 10 to attend a camellia show at the Alexandra Racecourse as well as Palmers Planet in Albany with some members from other garden clubs coming along for the ride.

The town’s anniversary segment of the Ruawai Promotions and Development Committee says the event will kick off with a get together on the Friday for a light supper and a chance to catch up with old friends and family.

“The Ruawai Hall will be decorated with photos from locals and the extensive collection held by the Ruawai High School,” says committee chair, Peter Flood. “We want people from Ruawai and further afield to be able to reminisce with old friends over a cup of tea, a beer or a glass of wine. Ruawai might be a small community but there are plenty of other people with connections back to Ruawai and we’re inviting them to join us.

“Our theme is about old and new. Celebrating where we have come from is just as important as where we have come to and what we have today.”

Saturday March 22 will start with a parade of community and sponsored business floats led by a horse team and some of the oldest cars, tractors and machinery in the district.

A gala at the sports ground will follow. “Ruawai would not be Ruawai without

Retired marine biologist, Barry Searle, says instead of restricting recreational anglers, the commercial fishing industry should be restrained. “The influx of recreational fishers from outside the area to the Kaipara coast has already started, but little is being done to restrain or even review the commercial operations — and this is the area that must be looked at.

“People must make a submission calling for the rights of recreational fishers to be retained and for the

Ruawai’s centenary-plus celebrationu by Paul Campbell

Ruawai is 100 years old. Well 105 to be exact. In 1908 a small settlement by the name of Shag Creek was renamed Ruawai and the event’s anniversary will be celebrated on the weekend of March 21, 22 next year.

Commission has called meetings in the Kaipara seeking feedback and testing ideas about the best shape for local authorities in the wider Northland region, to be announced later this year.

Three meetings will be held on Monday and Tuesday, August 19 and 20.

The Kaipara District Council commission chair, John Robertson, says despite the short notice from the government, he urges local residents to make their views known.

”The Local Government Commission has already consulted widely with

stakeholders in the north, including the four councils, as well as iwi, business groups, farmers and employers.

However it also wants to hear the voices of ratepayers, residents and ordinary members of the public.

“Now the views of Kaipara people are crucial as the LGC determines the best options and prepares its draft proposal for public release later in the year.”

The meeting schedule is:Monday August 19, 4–6pm,

Mangawhai Golf Club. Tuesday August 20, 11–1pm, Maungaturoto Centennial Hall. Tuesday August 20, 4–6pm the Lighthouse, Dargaville.

There will be something for everyone.”

The Centenary will culminate with a dinner dance on the Saturday night. The organising committee invites businesses and individuals who would like to help to contact Tina on 09 439 2046 or the website at www.ruawaicentenaryplus.co.nz. ¢

A bright futurefor young golferu by Rose Rees-Owen

Fifteen-year-old golfer, Jodi Macalister, is a name to remember. She is one of the eight leading Northland juniors with a bright future ahead of her.

The Dargaville High School student recently won the Top of the Harbour junior title at Waipu Golf Club and finished runner up at the Northland Under 23 Classic for the third year straight.

Spor t Nor thland golf development manager, Michael Macdonald, says Jodi has ‘considerable potential’.

“Over the next 12 months Jodi will be testing herself in a range of local senior events and going further afield to put herself against the country’s top amateurs at National Age Group events as she looks to take her game to the next level.”

Micheal says what’s driving Jodi is a healthy rivalry between her and her good friend from Whangaroa, Brooke Kingi.

“Both girls have played their way into Northland senior women’s teams and become leaders in the junior girls’ side.”

Those wondering whether the popular Kaipara Harbour boat cruises aboard the Kewpie Too will happen again — there is good news.

The four hour cruise from Pahi is on for Labour weekend and bookings are available now. This trip includes the Arapaoa and Otamatea Rivers, historical Puriri Point, Batley, Tanoa and the Ranganui Rail Bridge before returning to Pahi.

The day trip from Helensville to Dargaville and return will resume most

likely after Christmas. A new cruise to Pt Albert will also start around that time, visiting many historical places of interest.

Sadly, the popular Sand Bus tours from Helensville to Pouto and back are unlikely to return due to a combination of weather risks and logistics. Full details at www.kaiparacruises.co.nz. ¢

Association spokesperson Pauline Gough says while the display is now paintings only, there are still nearly forty pieces on show.

“The original showing was highly successful, and we wanted to ensure that anyone who may have missed it could still see a lot of the work our members displayed.”

The Funky Fish is a keen supporter

of local artists and endeavours to regularly have two month long showings of various works. All works in the current display are for sale and will be on show until the end of September.

Pauline says with the Cafe operating on winter hours, it is advisable to ring first to ensure they are open on 09 439 8883 or visit thefunkyfish.co.nz.

Art moves to Funky FishThe recent successful exhibition of art by members of the Dargaville Art Association has moved from the Muddy Waters Gallery and is now being displayed at the Funky Fish Café at Baylys Beach.

Confusion around water chargesu by Alan Wheatley

At least one local resident living near Dargaville is concerned over untreated rural water rates and the council’s policy around pipe maintenance, both of which she says are confusing.

Tina Portanger who farms near Dargaville with her husband, says they have used untreated water from the Kaihu River for several years to water stock, but says in all the time they have been there, they and several neighbours have maintained the lines from the source to their property.

“We always understood that we maintain the line from the meter into our property — that’s normal — but whenever it breaks or needs work from the meter back to the source, we have done it, as the council has not really wanted to know.”

On top of this, Tina says the rates are going up which she feels is a bit unfair.

“It’s untreated water, we are doing the upkeep and yet we are being charged the same as town residents, but with none of the benefits such line maintenance.”

Tina says in the past, the council have told her they can’t maintain rural lines like theirs, as in many cases,

they are so old they simply do not know where they are.

“The rate increase also seems unfair, as in major urban areas like Auckland, the rates are not only considerably less, but have not increased for the past two years. I also wonder if Dargaville residents even know their water charges are going up.”

The Kaipara District Council says while they will be reviewing untreated water rates, those using it should contribute to the cost.

Community engagement manager Barbara Ware says because the water is “raw” or untreated it is subject to weather which can leave it discoloured, which is why it is not for human consumption.

“All users connected to a council water supply are responsible for the pipework from the meter to their property. All pipework from the meter back to the water source is council’s responsibility and we are able to locate breaks when they occur.”

Quilters help tick item off wish listu by Rose Rees-Owen

The Dargaville Hospital wish list will use the money raised from the Quilt Show to brighten up the mental health family conference room.

Biannually the Dargaville quilters raffle off their wares and raise money for organisations. This year’s show is in the Fosters arcade, August 13 to 17.

The money raised will be split across four organisations and the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade, Kaipara Hospice, and the Northland Rescue Helicopter will also receive a funding boost.

Telehealth, a big ticket item on the wish list, which enables patients to have a video conference with a specialist, recently secured funding.

Kaipara Community Health Trust executive, Deb Evans, says there is also

smaller items on the list and wanted to use the money on a targeted project.

“We want to brighten up the room with furniture, plants and artwork.”

Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas, says the room is a space away from the hospital, located in the community health building, where mental health clients and their families meet with health workers.

“We want to make it a pleasant room where clients feel comfortable.”

It’s not the first time the Dargaville Quilters have supported the wish list. The last quilt show in 2011 raised around $1,800, with a percentage going towards the list. ¢

A rare find in Paparoau by Rose Rees Owen

Paparoa Lions member, Jim Rowlands, was baiting and trapping for pests along the Paparoa bush walkway when he came across an unusual broken egg.

p A rare glimpse at a banded rail bird

“It was quite distinctive in size and colouring and was bigger than a sparrow’s egg.”

It belonged to a banded rail bird, or moho-pereru, known to be shy and reclusive, and is on the threatened species list.

He found the egg halfway along the bush walk and suspected it to belong to the banded rail, spotting one a few months month earlier. He then verified it with the Department of Conser vat ion Whangarei area office.

DOC Kauri Coast area office ranger, Darren Jones, says it’s not the first banded rail sighting he has heard of in the Kaipara Harbour.

“My son found an injured Banded Rail at Kellys Bay many years ago.” They took it to the Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei.

The birds live in wetlands and look similar to a weka. They are about the size of a domestic chicken and are

easiest to spot at dawn and dusk when feeding.

Little is known about the Banded Rail because they are secretive birds making it difficult to gather data on population size, but pre 1930, they were far more abundant.

The Paparoa Lions maintain the bush walk as well as eradicate possums and rodents, as a result, bird life is increasing. ¢

SAUSAGE SIZZLE ! ! !

These are not the glittering, nationally networked operations of the city, but are what the government calls low-powered FM stations.

One of these is Today FM, broadcasting out of a rural property on the way to Baylys Beach on 106.7 and on the eastern side of town on 87.7FM.

Owner operator of Today FM is retired farmer Brent Robertson who with wife Alison, set the station up in 2007, following a lifelong keen interest in things radio.

Brent says the musical format of the station — hits from the 40s, 50s and 60s — fills a niche that was not being served.

“It’s all music from my own collection plus a couple of online sources who supply some of the harder to find tracks, but a lot of it is music no other station is playing — and people love it.”

As to who those people are, Brent says he has no official audience data, as he stopped record calls after the first several hundred a few years back, but says he knows while it’s primarily 50 plus, there are also a surprising and increasing number of listeners in their thirties and even younger.

“Whether they are disillusioned by the music served up for their generation or just want something different, many younger people tell us the music we are playing is great and that maybe their parents’ tastes are not so bad after all!”

Local radio — filling the gapsu by Alan Wheatley

There was a time when rural districts had little or no local radio, but now, even the smallest towns can — and do — have their own radio stations and Dargaville is no exception, with the area sporting around four.

Apart from the occasional community service spot and a couple of regular weekend on air hosts, the station is largely talk and commercial free continuous music, another real point of difference.

Technically, it is a surprisingly simple operation, set up for a few thousand dollars in a converted garage Brent got for free from the Dargaville Baptist Church.

The whole system is computer driven, with an impressive music library of around 8,000 songs rotating 24/7 via a fully automated system. Brent says after more than 50 years of farming, the station is a great hobby.

“I’ve still got 126 acres up here and I still tend to water troughs and fences and do the odd bit of road works and the likes, but essentially, I’m retired and the station is a great hobby that lets me give something back — and people seem to love it, so I’m happy.” ¢

Jobs put off over the winter can be looked at afresh, and there's always new technology and materials to consider — the list of options for the modern renovator is endless!

That's why a great place to begin — whether you're transforming your existing home or starting a whole new build — is with a dose of inspiration from the big names in design, colour, style, gadgets and gear. It's all on display as the region's two top home shows open their doors in the coming weeks, and it's the perfect opportunity to get fired up for your big project.

Whangarei's home and living show takes place this weekend, at the Kensington sports grounds and stadium. As usual, you'll find some of the top names in Northland interior design and building on site to answer your questions.

Even bigger (in fact, it's the biggest in New Zealand) is the colossal Auckland home show, situated in the vast pavilions of Greenlane's ASB Showgrounds. This

HOME SHOW INSPIRATIONInnovation and inspiration for your homeSpring is just around the corner, and already the brightening weather has people thinking about ways to improve their living spaces and increase the value of their homes.

all-encompassing expo of all things home and garden takes place in early September, just in time for spring — this year from the 11th to the 16th.

To make the most out of both these shows, plan ahead and focus on what your project is all about. It's so easy to get swept away with kitchen ideas when you have a bathroom makeover on the cards, or go home with a new lounge suite when it was a pool you wanted! Take plans with you, or even photos so you can ask better questions.

And don't forget, local stores who are part of big chains (for example, Flooring Xtra) will be represented — you can come back to see your locals with home show specials in mind.

There are sure to be deals, bargains, and new and exciting products on offer, but remember, there are few things which can't be achieved by local professionals right here. Take home the best new ideas, then pick up the phone and talk to your trusted local builders, electricians, plumbers, tilers, flooring professionals and more — they can help you achieve the latest look and the finest finish without charging massive mileage to reach the Kaipara! ¢

Top celebrity chefs (and aspiring home gourmets) all agree that cooking on gas provides a more controlled heat for those culinary masterpieces. Modern kitchens with gas hobs and ovens are the last word in style, with acres of brushed aluminium and stainless steel.

In the lounge, gas fires are now often seen as a cleaner, more economical alternative to wood burners, and the sheer efficiency of the latest gas burning systems is matched only by the design options available to interior decorators. From fireplaces which look traditional and cozy to ultra-modern glass and chrome creations, gas is safe and warm, providing smokeless, room-filling heat.

HOME SHOW INSPIRATION

Hot trend fuels modern design

But gas need not be on display, either. Many home builders now insist on convenient califont hot water systems to take care of endless hot showers — an unobtrusive little box outdoors leaves all that cupboard space for your convenience, too. Gas supply here

in the Kaipara is assured by a regular delivery schedule and gas users can be certain of regular, punctual drop-offs and bottle replacements from the Gas and Tyre Services fleet. Those looking to fit gas systems in their new home are ably served by the qualified gasfitters at Plumbing and Heating in Dargaville, who can also test existing systems for safety, or expand your system to include heating, cooking and hot water as desired. ¢

One interior design and building trend which is always spectacularly showcased at the Auckland home show is clean, efficient modern gas — about as far from your mum and dad’s old kitchen range as one could imagine.

It can only be issued in advance of any work taking place.

You may also need a resource consent if your project has an impact on the environment.

You can access details information from the websites of your local council.

New rules came into effect in 2012 which apply to projects containing restricted building work critical to the integrity of a building by ensuring that it is structurally sound and weather-tight.

Most building projects require a building consent before any work is started. The consent includes not only the building work but also any work related to site preparation, plumbing or drainage.

If you do not obtain a building consent before starting work, it will cause problems later in the project and may also lead to anybody involved as property owners or tradespersons facing prosecution.

You do not need to apply for a building consent if your project is covered by an exemption. However all building work undertaken must comply with the New Zealand Building Code.

Examples of exempt building works include decks less than 1.5 metres above ground level, a garden shed less than 10sq metres and at least its height from the boundary, fencing less than 2.5 metres high, car ports not exceeding 20sq metres and even playground equipment, used by a single household, that is less than three metres above the ground.

Organics key to keeping wellu by Alan Wheatley

Elf Organics and Wellness. The last two words in the name of Dargaville’s newest health and well-being store and organic food shop say it all really.

Opened last week in McKay’s Arcade in Victoria Street, Jeni Gorrie is already doing a brisk trade with a large range of natural remedies, organic food, friendly expert advice plus reading material on all sorts of health issues.

Elf Organics and Wellness is perhaps not typical, in that alongside the stock of natural remedies, medicines and homeopathic medicines, she has a wide selection of organic foods.

Here you’ll find a little of everything you need in your pantry from coffees and teas, to candy bars, crisps, specialist bread, flour, cereals, jam, nuts, noodles soy and other milk, plus spices and even delicious organic peanut butter.

Jeni says it’s the grocery items that make her shop different.

“Along with being a natural therapist, I was working with hospice patients and realised a lot of the foods and remedies I was recommending to them they simply could not get in Dargaville, and that’s one of the reasons I set up the shop.”

With 20 years of research into health & well-being, studies in natural therapies, nutrition, Reiki and massage, Jeni is a certified natural, massage and Reiki therapist.

She has also developed a range of natural healing balms, colloidal silver, and aromas (Elfhood Naturals) that have become popular over the 12 years she has been selling them.

“I don’t have all the answers, but I am happy to look further into conditions,

A graceful way to stay healthyu Alan Wheatley

By the time many people reach 87, they are often content to take life a little easier and smell that coffee they have heard so much about, but not so Jean Wrigley.

For the past six years Jean has been going to Dargaville’s Shaolin Kempo Martial Arts School on River Road, to continue her classes in Chen-style t’ai chi ch’uan, with veteran instructor Wendy Salter.

Tai Chi, to use the common English term for it, has a strong global following among people who are not so much interested in the pure martial art side, but for its benefit to health and health maintenance, with many doctors supporting its effectiveness as an alternative exercise and a form of martial arts therapy.

Aficionados claim this graceful martial art, with its history back as far as the 12th century, focusses the mind solely on the movements of form and helps engender a state of mental calm and clarity, with its primary aim being health and well-being.

Other key benefits include a useful self-defence component, which all the moves learned incorporate, additional skills Jean says she has also trained for.

“The other really beneficial side to it is it helps with overall mobility, balance and helps reduce instances of falling, which can be a problem for many older people.”

Trainer Wendy Salter says ACC figures show that people taking one Tai Chi class a week reduce their tendency to fall by 67 per cent.

While grading of skills is optional, the levels range from introductory grey sash to black sash and Jean says if she was graded, she would be at a 1st black sash level.

The school, which operates under the national Roger Gemmell Martial Arts banner, runs two Tai Chi classes a week and all enquiries can be made to Wendy on 021 225 2633. ¢

Jeni also offers an holistic consultation service and provides the very popular First Light range of native New Zealand plant essence therapy and aromatherapy, plus hands-on Reiki holistic therapy.

As a Fonterra supplier, I have to say that some of Fonterra’s media spin masters have made matters worse by sounding very unconvincing, not looking the TV camera straight in the eye and the spectacle of watching Fonterra’s Chief Executive Theo Spierings trying to defend Fonterra’s position on TV1 Q&A programme and TV3’s The Nation, was embarrassing to say the least.

On TV3 The Nation programme, he looked perplexed when the commentator’s panel stated that regardless of the outcome, he should resign and fall on his sword.

Some proprietary dairy companies have suggested in the media that Fonterra is too big and being run by farmers, is not in the interests of the country, even a suggestion that Fonterra should be broken up and that its current management style demonstrates arrogancy.

I believe the one commentator who has come out on top in all of this media fiasco is the government’s Minister of Trade Tim Groser. His commonsense and the confidence that he has demonstrated in his plain English statements, have been very clear.

It is a pity he wasn’t working for Fonterra. The Chairman of Fonterra John Wilson appearing on TV has really been a non-event. He claims that he has been keeping New Zealand dairy farmers informed.

At this stage it is not New Zealand dairy farmers that he should be worried about, but the issue of Fonterra’s national and international reputation. He has not demonstrated the same demeanour as the Minister.

In short, the Fonterra media campaign has been poorly conducted and has left a feeling that it is camouflaging a multitude of sins, including incompetence.

Fonterra needs to save face

Tim Groser made a statement on TV that New Zealand has enemies, who when given the opportunity like to attack New Zealand’s claim of being 100% Clean and Green. These include New Zealand and worldwide dairy competitors.

Watching the Chinese Embassy’s representative on TV state that in China the three strike rule applies, three strikes and you are out, I find a little ironical. China has a history that where they think it is warranted, they have executed individuals representing large companies.

Maybe with Fonterra’s history in China over food quality issues, our dairy leaders should be pleased they are not Chinese citizens.

Farmers of New Zealand supports the government holding a full inquiry into the events that have caused Fonterra to face a major public backlash, but regardless of the outcome, farmers will want to see decisive action being taken where incompetence is found.

Fonterra’s Chief Executive Theo Spierings has stated on TV that while it is only a small amount of product involved of some 38 tonnes, the fallout cost to New Zealand dairy farmers will be in the tens of millions of dollars.

Fonterra is a farmer co-operative owned and controlled by its 10,000 dairy farmers. Any action that threatens

We farmers over the last two weeks, have witnessed our co-operative Fonterra under siege. What started as a policy of being up-front and forthright with our customers here in New Zealand and internationally, has resulted in claims that Fonterra is too big and should not be controlled by farmers.

the structure and the future wellbeing of our co-operative, must be defended. Our reputation and objective of producing the world’s best dairy products is uncompromising.

The Chinese have a saying, one must not lose face. If that means that Fonterra’s Chief Executive and the Chairman must step aside for New Zealand dairy farmers to save face, it would be a small price to pay for the greater good of our 10,000 co-operative dairy farmers. ¢

Ron Manderson told last Saturday’s meeting he was not only frustrated with the council, but had found he no longer had the personal time to commit to the association which he said was ‘suffering from ratepayer inertia.’

He welcomed incoming chair, Bill Guest, Operations Director for Farmers of New Zealand, and a former KDC councillor who said he had every confidence he could inject some much needed impetus into the organisation.

Mr Guest said he was looking forward to the many challenges the KCRA faced going forward.

Ruawai resident John Edwards was appointed deputy chair.

Mr Guest said the association’s focus would continue to be on rating legislation and the validation of the current rate structure, while they would also be maintaining a strong focus on the role of the Audit Office in relation to the former operations of KDC.

Changes at KCRAu by Alan Wheatley

p Bill Guest — newly appointed chairman p Ron Manderson — outgoing chairman

The chairman of the Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association has resigned, citing apathy and continuing frustration with the Kaipara District Council at many levels.

Meanwhile Mangawhai ratepayers who have been withholding rate payments will have their case heard in the Whangarei High Court on Friday.

The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association is claiming the Kaipara District Council borrowed money to cover cost overruns without

ratepayers’ knowledge, that these were hidden from public scrutiny and that the Auditor General’s office also failed to detect them.

While the case against the council has been bought by the MRRA, Mr Guest says it is of key concern to all KCRA members. ¢
