Holiday programme a hit

A fine catch

Give me the mike

Department of Conservation Biodiversity Rangers Oliver Knox and Alana McLeod from the Kauri coast office met children at Dargaville Library on Wednesday, January 21 as part of the library’s school holiday programme. They talked to the children about pest fish such as Koi carp and encouraged them to keep an eye out on their local rivers, streams and lakes, for the noxious species and call the Department of Conservation Kauri Coast office on 09 439 3450.

When 11-year-old Jesse Andrew went surfcasting with his Uncle at Glinks Gully, he thought he had a good fish on the line. When he finally landed his catch he was as pleased as punch to see what a monster it was. “Hold the line Uncle so I can get a photo of this one,” said Jesse. Jesse was holidaying and has gone home to Auckland with a story of the one the didn’t get away.

Erica, Sophia and Joseph Tebbutt spent a rare afternoon with the ZM crew recently thanks to a winning bid in a silent auction. Erica attended a fundraiser last year for Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodation for families who have children in Starship Hospital. Sophia and Joseph were delighted to sit in on the afternoon show and go for a ride in the ZM Black Thunder.

★ New films this week

Love is StrangeAfter nearly four decades together, Ben (John

Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and - victims of the relentless New York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While George moves in with two cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) who live down stairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teenage son (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bunk bed. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.

American SniperChris Kyle was nothing more than a Texan

man who wanted to become a cowboy, but in his thirties he found out that maybe his life needed something different, something where he could express his real talent, something that could help America in its fight against terrorism. So he joined the SEALs in order to become a sniper. After marrying, Kyle and the other members of the team are called for their first tour of Iraq. Kyle’s struggle isn’t with his missions, but about his relationship with the reality of the war and, once returned at home, how he manages to handle it with his urban life, his wife and kids.

The Imitation GameBased on the real life story of legendary

cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II.

Horrible Bosses 2Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick,

Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

BirdmanA tour-de-force performance from Michael

Keaton, as an actor struggling to break free of his typecast role of the past and engage with live theatre again. Birdman was a real 1960s cartoon hero, but this black comedy goes deeper than the comic book page.

Penguins of MadagscarThe wide-cracking wiseguys from the

Madagascar trilogy get their own time in the spotlight, as we learn how a quartet of resourceful birds went from Antarctica to the big time.

Into the WoodsA much anticipated, magical adventure

adapted from a best-selling Broadway musical. The Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales are woven into a tapestry of images and songs with the able assistance of an all star cast, including Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

Mr TurnerA historic, anarchic and candid look at artist

Joseph Turner - a living national treasure of Britain in the 1800s, a visionary but also a scoundrel to the core - a scandaliser of the aristocracy but a friend to royalty.

Community Flavour and Variety Working for the community

Council asks questionsKaipara residents may soon get a

phone call asking questions about the Kaipara District Council and how it does its job.

The National Research Bureau has been commissioned by the council to conduct the survey, through a random selection.

“We want to track what our residents think about what we do,” said community engagement manager, Barbara Ware. “The best way to do this is to interview a representative

cross-section of people and to have this done by an independent group to ensure there is no bias.”

The National Research Bureau is an independent market research company offering specialised services to local authorities throughout New Zealand and has been commissioned to undertake the survey and report back.

Interviewing starts Friday January 30 and is expected to finish on Wednesday February 11.

“We appreciate there will be inconvenience at times but ask that people remain patient,” says Northpower network general manager Graham Dawson.

“The end result will mean that the electricity supply in Dargaville will be more reliable.

“Reconfiguration of the network will lessen the visual impact from the lines and ensure less unplanned outages from faults.”

Work will involve pole changing, cross arm changes and the removal of an 11kV circuit. A number of street lamps are also being upgraded.

Some disruptions to normal traffic flow may be experienced, due to the movement of heavy vehicles.

Should the dates for work or shutdowns be cancelled for any reason, people will be notified of a new date and shutdown times in advance.

Mr Dawson says people with outage enquiries should phone Northpower

customer care manager Kate Deery on 09 430 1784.

Matakohe resident Jim Duffy knows how valuable life rings can be in water emergencies.

North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard members, Allan Crabbe and Bobby Smith with the Tinopai Wharf rescue ring

Motivated by a close call involving his son and two friends at Tinopai in 2003, and also by a number of reported incidents at beaches this summer, he has taken action and purchased two life saving rings to be held at Pahi and Tinopai.

“I just feel that I needed to do something,” Jim said. “There have been so many incidents all over the country recently and I can’t just sit back and do nothing.”

For many years Jim has campaigned for the council to purchase life rings, even writing to the government, but decided to purchase some himself when he learnt that residents at Langs Bay had banded together to organise one. “All Marine in Port road, Whangarei gave me 10% discount which was great. People in my Ukulele club and Matakohe Music Makers are going to contribute for the Pahi ring,” Jim said.

Heading for the top by Joanne Speechly

by Joanne SpeechlyA rare opportunity to climb Baldrock Mountain presents itself next month as part of the annual Top of the Rock fundraiser.

In its fifth year, the multi-sport event caters for walkers, runners and mountain bikers, both recreational and competitive, and crosses terrain usually closed to the public.

Over 300 people participated in last year’s event, through bush, lakes and farmland and up the iconic Baldrock Mountain.

This year offers more of the same and people can choose from a five or 10km walk or run; a combined 10km run and 15km mountain bike ride; or a 30km mountain bike ride.

The combined option can be an individual or team effort.

“If it’s your New Years resolution to exercise more, participate in more

community events or get out in the countryside more, then entering the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s Top of the Rock event fits the bill for everything,” says organiser Cheryl Anderson.

“People of any age can enter — last year the prize for the oldest participant went to an 83-year-old.”

Top of the Rock 2015 is on Sunday, February 8, and there are plenty of prizes up for grabs.

Visit kaiwakasports.co.nz to find the entry form and further details. Registrations are also accepted on the day but cost $5 extra per event.

Contact Cheryl Anderson on 09 431 2051, 027 346 2702 or kaiwakasports@ gmail.com.

Youth engagement key for TokaFestGreater youth engagement is a key priority for organisers of this year’s TokaFest.

The annual event is now in its third year and takes place at Toka Toka Tavern on Saturday, March 7.

“TokaFest tries to promote community sustainability, generosity and creativity,” says Olly Knox of KP Productions. “These are all things that we want to encourage in our younger generation, so we are keen to connect with a younger audience and have more young people involved at an organisational level.”

Two ways in which this is being achieved is by enlisting the expertise of local artist Brigitta Bell, who has created this year’s poster design, and a group of students from MAINZ, including Dargaville’s David Andrew, will undertake TokaFest’s sound engineering and stage management.

New to this year’s line-up is the open stage from midday until 2pm. During this time there will be family-oriented activities, such as art and craft workshops and displays and a dedicated kids area. Circus Kumarani will also provide a space for people to learn, practice and share their skills.

The riverboat Daisy will provide transport to TokaFest for the first time in 2015. Due to tides, Daisy will leave Dargaville at midday and arrive at 2pm.

Places are limited and bookings are essential. Contact Sue at the Visitor Information Centre.

Chair of the Kauri Coast Promotional Society Erica Tebbutt says, “There will be something for everyone at this festival. Tell your friends and family to come along for a new year catch up and an opportunity to have some fun listening to great music, in a beautiful setting.”

For more information and updates, check out the TokaFest Facebook page.

Delightful Dolls

A Bollywood wedding

by Ann Morgan

The late Lothee Diamond was well known in Dargaville for her collection of dolls.

Dressed in national costumes, some with cloth bodies, paper mache’ faces and real hair, the dolls date back to the 1880s.

Upon her death in 1963 Lothee requested the historic doll collection be given to the Dargaville Museum so she could share her love of dolls and their fine workmanship with others and now the dolls are on display for the first time.

Lothee migrated to New Zealand from England with her parents in 1877 as a 10 year old. She arrived in Auckland with her French parents and her precious doll collection came with her.

In later years, Lothee lived in Tangowahine, Tokatoka and Aratapu and worked for the New Zealand Post Office and Telegraph department. In 1920, she married Patrick Diamond and together they lived in Dargaville.

Lothee passed away aged 95 and is buried in the Mt Wesley Cemetery. Little Red Riding Hood

A wedding with a difference was celebrated at Paul Smith Dines, a function venue in the old National Bank building in Paparoa. Inspired by the popular Indian film genre, from left, were Tony King, the bride, Davina Wallam Duke, the groom, Andy Wallam, and Eliton Gomes. “In keeping with the theme, the wedding breakfast was all from the sub-continent,” said host, Paul Smith. “I specialise in private catering events and this was something of a milestone.”

Yulia and friends in concert at Kaiwaka by Ann Morgan

Celebrated New Zealand female vocalist Yulia, together with local talent, is to perform in the Kaipara.

Kaiwaka Sports Complex manager Cheryl Anderson wrote to the internationally acclaimed artist inviting her to perform a concert if she were available.

“I was surprised and delighted when Yulia accepted our invitation. This is a great opportunity for our little town to host such an event. Yulia will be singing from the balcony of the sports complex to the fans sitting out on the rugby field,” says Cheryl.

“Known as ‘the voice of rare beauty’, Yulia has also opened up the opportunity to showcase some of our local talent on the night. Those who were selected to sing with her are very excited to have the experience.”

The concert will be held at the Kaiwaka rugby grounds, 2 Gibbons Rd

on Sunday, February 15, at 7 pm. Tickets are available from the Maungaturoto, Mangawhai Heads and Kaiwaka Four Square supermarkets, and the Wellsford sports and leisure shop for $10 an adult and children under 18 are free. Gates sales are also available.

“We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the opportunity to hear Yulia. She is a classical crossover singing sensation.

“People should bring their own blankets to sit on and if the weather turns wet we can move the event inside. There will also be food stalls on site,” says Cheryl.

A winner of several New Zealand music awards, Yulia’s concerts are often sold out. She has several number one albums and platinum records.

The gregarious bunch, who recently graduated from the NZ School of Radio Tauranga, will join current intern Jordan Hart, as they endeavour to refine their broadcasting skills.

With ages ranging from 17 to 22, the four newcomers are looking forward to working in a small town.

“An internship in a small place means that we get a chance to try everything and I like the way Big River FM integrates so closely with the community,” says Jason Batey.

Zara Reid agrees. She also sees the internship as a good opportunity to learn, build on her skill base and gain confidence as a broadcaster.

“I’m keen to focus on the community side of radio while I’m here and learn about how it differs from the commercial stations.”

Ben Francis would like to further his career in sports broadcasting and is currently

hosting Sportszone with Allen Dennis. “The best thing about being here is having an opportunity to work on a dedicated sports show, which is what I want to do long term.”

And finally Hamburger — or Hunter Buyo — is looking forward to interacting with his audience, meeting listeners and telling the odd joke or two. The budding announcer would like to co-host a radio show and reckons he just had to apply for the Big River FM internship “to find out whether Dargaville was a real town!” He’s joking.

Station manager Anaru Tana is excited by the calibre of this year’s interns.

“They are eccentric, quirky and witty but also very capable. They’re also keen to get involved in the community and give local businesses and community groups a hand when needed — just give us a call.

“Community radio is about making a difference.”

The line-up: Big River FM interns Jason, Jordan, Zara, Hunter and Ben

Get the most out of your renovationWhen it comes time to spruce up the old homestead, whether for reasons of style, substance or sale, there is always a question of cost versus gain.

Television shows featuring desperate do-it-yourselfers blowing their budgets and running into trouble abound — and nobody wants their own life to imitate fiction in this way.

Tip one — Planning. This seems like a no-brainer, but planning beforehand and sticking to that plan can save a lot of strife. With a plan of your renovation project in hand you can confidently consult with local professionals on price, and these folks will pick up any hidden snags which might trip you up along the way. For example, if you are adding an ensuite to your bedroom, decide early on just how you would like it to work, where you would like the fixtures and fittings, and how you would like everything to look.

A simple sketch can be expanded on with some measurements, and you have a foundation to use when talking to your tiler, plumber, builder and electrician. Resist the urge to change the plan in mid-project, follow it through, and everyone will literally be on the same page.

Tip two — Invest for impact. This is most pertinent when you are looking to renovate to sell, but even in your long-term home, it’s easy to make a big impact on the look and feel of the space without busting the bank. Some rooms look tired simply because of faded or dated paint, or tatty floor coverings.

Much can be achieved without tearing down walls or adding rooms — in the kitchen and bathroom especially, the two core areas looked at by potential home buyers. Rather than construct a new kitchen, is it possible just to resurface the cupboards and cabinets, or revitalise the space with a new benchtop? Would your lounge look a million bucks with a ‘feature wall’ of richly patterned wallpaper, a coat of eggshell white elsewhere and some fresh carpets? Most bathrooms can be transformed by switching out the fittings and not a single sheet of drywall needs to be disturbed. For extra value when renovating, check out your local demolition recyclers. With whole ranch sliders, windows, doors, benches

and even bathroom bits and pieces in perfectly good order, saved from demolished buildings, this is a popular option to switch out tired or broken joinery for a very reasonable price.

Tip three — Choose your tradespeople carefully. Or better yet, appoint a trusted professional as your project manager,

and allow them to hand-pick people they trust for the job. With new building laws now rigorously enforced, the scope of DIY has been somewhat limited compared to the ‘cowboy’ days of old. Now it’s even more important to have the right people on the tools, with the correct qualifications and certifications.

It might seem like a counter-intuitive thing to mention in an article about saving money, but trust us.

The few dollars more spent engaging a real plumber, electrician or builder rather than ‘the man from down the pub’ are a smaller price to pay than the hefty fines now being handed down — or the potential loss of insurance cover. Anyway, you would never consider hiring your mate’s mate as a surgical doctor — why live with potentially dangerous or messy plumbing, wiring, drains or structural work when there are professionals on call?

Tip four — bundle projects together. A simple one, this. If your roof has to come up for replacement or repairs, what better time to install that insulation

or run the tubing for that heat pump, shower extractor or vent system? If your hot water cylinder is wheezing on its last legs, perhaps it’s time to think about solar along with the replacement. If you’re changing the kitchen around, don’t make the gaps in islands and cupboards to fit your tired old stove and fridge — take a look at a new set to compliment the redesign. Look at ways to combine jobs like this, and, though it will cost more all at once, the price will be cheaper than doing each job separately.

There’s the added bonus of not having your home taken over by busy tradies more than once. A single day’s work, and you could have it all finished and looking fresh.

Summer proof your homeWith the hottest part of the year well and truly here, many people around the North are thinking about ways to beat the heat and humidity.

While there have been numerous great innovations touted over the years to warm up the family home in winter, trying to create an oasis of cool in the sweltering heat of summer seems just that little bit more complicated.

The best solution to hot, sticky, stuffy rooms is to generate airflow. This can be as simple as good placement of windows and doors, but keeping them open when you’re away at work or when tiny insects are swarming is never a good idea. Mesh screens are a cost effective part of your summer plan, allowing any gentle breeze to work its magic. Generate one of your own with a ceiling fan — far more effective than numerous small plug-in fans, there is a reason that these roof-mounted devices are ubiquitous in tropical climates. There are even options to

duct cooler air in from outside during the day, using insulated tubing to bring air from under the eaves of the cool side of the house into the living areas.

Insulation is a big part of the equation as well. You may think of the batts in your roof as primarily a weapon against winter chills, but they serve another purpose right now. Insulation forms a barrier between the living spaces below and the fiercely hot ceiling cavity, where, even with tar paper covering the iron or tiles, temperatures can soar into the 60s and 70s.

Perhaps the ultimate solution to summer heat is to install efficient air conditioning. It’s a high-tech option, and should be considered in combination with everything else mentioned here for the best results. Modern heat pump type air conditioners have the bonus of being

able to switch to heating mode in winter, but in summer the cool air they generate can be pure bliss. The important factor to consider is the right placement

and the right size of machine for your home, allowing the heat pump to run at optimum power and cutting the amount of energy it uses to achieve your aim of a cool, comfortable home.

FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE! – Bring the whole family

GRAND OPENING – SATURDAY

Friendly faces at the Funky Fish by Ayla Miller

Phillipe and Sophie Guerin always dreamt of working and bringing up their young family in New Zealand. Now they are managing popular cafe, restaurant and bar The Funky Fish, their dream is a reality.

The couple, originally from Brittany in north west France decided over dinner at The Funky Fish that they would like to make this place their home and started managing the restaurant just before Christmas.

“We chose to live in New Zealand because it was small and we really liked it,” Sophie says. In France they owned a food truck which specialised

in pizza and crepes. Sophie and Phillipe have many plans for the cafe including a winter menu which will serve family style meals inspired by food served in the farming regions of France.

“We have lots of locals coming here so want to cater to them too,” Sophie says.

“We still do fish and chips.”

Fresh new business in town by Andy Bryenton

Fresh is best — and that’s the message new business owners Gloria Imms and Matthew Sander are bringing to Normanby Street this month.

The young couple have all the skills needed to make their new venture a resounding success. Gloria’s background in retail is the perfect match to Matthew’s 15 years of experience as a qualified butcher, meaning that their Vege Stop Plus store is sure to be filled with tasty ideas for dinner.

The popular market is set to be reborn as a fresh food and produce superstore, with a full refurbishment programme underway. As well as choice cuts of meat and a wealth of farm-fresh produce sourced locally, the pair plan to install bulk bins for dry goods, fridges for milk, and a selection of home essentials. Soon a quick stop for juicy seasonal fruit and veg could well include roasted coffee beans, prime rib and a loaf or two of bread.

It’s a concept which fits well with the cornucopia of fruit and veg grown locally in the North, including of course our world famous Kumara! This

Saturday Gloria and Matthew invite local folks to come and attend their grand opening, with a sausage sizzle, some cracker deals on new season’s produce, and the chance to meet and greet the team who are dedicated to bringing the best of local fare to our plates.

The good oil for farmersIt is a cliché perhaps that every cloud has a silver lining, but it is certainly an apt one at the present, when we have seen the gloom over the downturn in milk prices on the international market being somewhat compensated for by the upswing in beef and wool.

Then too, the farming sector can take heart from another vital commodity cost.

The plunging price of fuel means there will be some valuable savings on the farm, even though there is also the spectre of summer drought crowding over the financial horizon.

Petrol and diesel prices at the pump have dropped by more than 40 cents a litre since October and when you give it a little thought, that is a ‘priceless’ figure for the man making a living on the land.

It means savings across the board — on the operation of farm machinery and equipment as well as in transport costs off the farm — even for the long drive into town for supplies.

It is to be hoped that the cheaper fuel prices also translate into the cost of getting goods to market — road transport, loading and shipping should

all benefit from cheaper fuel costs. It may well be early days, but with predictions that the market glut which has caused the drop may well continue for some time, it must filter down for the benefit of production costs everywhere.

Another area where we should expect to see some good on farm savings will be in fertiliser application. Cheaper fert as well as chemicals and the cost of application should also come home to stabilise the rural bank balance.

My views are certainly being underlined elsewhere. For instance, the Bank of New Zealand senior economist Doug Steel is expecting a fall in the consumer price index in the next two quarters and a “whiff of deflation” in New Zealand because of the fuel price plunge.

He says: “We’re seeing some of that sentiment filter into interest rate

markets with quite low interest rates, from even already low levels.”

“I guess from a New Zealand perspective we are net oil importers, so a lower price is a positive in the sense that it’s lowering the cost of the economy.”

Ken Shirley, the chief executive of Road Transport Forum New Zealand, also reckons we farmers, as well as other industries, should see the benefits. Carriers have fuel adjustment factors built into their contracts and any savings are passed on to customers.

“As long you have a competitive market, then suppliers of all goods and services are looking to compete and they take the opportunity wherever they

see a cost reduction to pass that on,” he said.

The Treasury’s director of macroeconomic policy, Tim Ng says that overall, it’s probably positive — if you’ve got a lower oil price, that’s an input into production that’s imported, so you’re reducing the cost structure of the economy when oil prices fall.”

In closing this column, let me put the whole thing into something that graphically illustrates the savings that are to be made — the price of benchmark Brent crude oil has fallen by more than half since mid-2014 and is now at its lowest in five-and-a half-years.

And that is simply very good news down on the farm!

Circus festival ‘awesome’ by Joanne Speechly

Circus Kumarani’s 9th annual Northland Community Circus Festival was held at Waipoua Forest Camping Ground on January 17 and 18.

“It takes a community to run a successful community circus festival,” said Jenny Huriwai, who manages Dargaville’s Circus Kumarani.

“Once again we were well supported by the national and international circus community and local whanau. I’d like to thank everyone who played a part.”

Although the gala show was a highlight for many, the workshops,

games and informal interactions over both days kept more than 100 participants smiling and promising to come back next year. Even the steady showers on Saturday night did little to dampen the spirits of either performers or the audience.
