ADVERBIAL CLAUSES.

An adverbial clause is a dependent clause thatfunctions as an adverb. In other words, itcontains a subject (explicit or implied) and apredicate, and it modifies a verb.

Purpose clauses 

You use a purpose clause when you want tostate the purpose of the action in theindependent clause. The most common type ofpurpose clause is a to-infinitive clause.

In formal writing, in order to and so as to areoften used.

The company conducted a detailed survey in orderto gauge its clients’ views.

In formal writing, you can also introduce apurpose clause with so that or in order that .These finite purpose clauses usually contain

a modal.

Dr Chan adjusted the overhead projector so that the students would be able to see the chart more clearly.

The lecturer finished his lecture five minutes early so 

that the students could come and ask him questions.

There are a number of other ways of expressing

purpose in English. These are some of the mostcommon ones:

“ With a view to, with the intention of, with the 

object/aim of, for the purpose of …”  

If you use these phrases, make sure that theverb is in the _ing form.

The university introduced two new English courses with a view to enhancing students ’ proficiency in the language.

Examples: 

We have to eat so that we may live.

Here the Adverb-Clause ‘so that we can live’ is the purposefor which we eat.

That means the verb ‘eat’ is addressing the purpose.

Such an Adverb Clause of Purpose will begin with

1.So that2.In order that3.In order to4.Lest

etc…

I will give you a map so that you can find the way to your relative’s house.

In this sentence also the purpose for giving the map hasbeen noted in the sentence in the form of an adverb-clause.

In your written and spoken assignments you willoften need to answer the question ‘Why?’. Whenyou want to explain why something happens, youcan use a reason clause introduced by theconjunctions because , as or since .

As she wanted to practise her spoken English, Carrie regularly took part in the ELC’s Big Mouth Corner.

Mark joined the English Drama Club because he wanted to improve his intonation.

Don’t use so in sentences beginning with since , as  or because . Here is a common mistake:

Since he was interested in movies, so David joined 

the PolyU International Film Society.

Read the following sentence.

Because he likes his master, he helped his master. 

In this sentence, why he helped his master has beenanswered by the Adverb-Clause ‘because he likes hismaster’. 

Such an Adverb-Clause may be of Adverb-Clause ofReason type.

I did this work, because this work is part of my educational 

project. 

In this sentence, why I did this work has beenanswered by the adverb-clause ‘because this work ispart of my educational project’.

reason.

We were unable to carry out the experiment  on 

account of a malfunction in the computer. We were unable to carry out the experiment because  

the computer malfunctioned.

As you will see, there are many other ways ofindicating reason and cause in English.
