ADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads are supported on Windows 7 and 8 operating systems and the next release will also be supported on Windows 10. EMIT 3.4 released EMIT version 3.4 was released in June 2015. The new features include: Updated road traffic emission factors and fleet data. Source apportionment: quantifying the contributions from particular road vehicles, such as diesel cars, to emissions and concentrations (when used with ADMS-Urban). The apportionment is fully user-defined; for example emissions can be apportioned by EURO class or vehicle size. Greatly improved speed: large calculations now take minutes rather than hours. CAMS air quality forecasts now available from CERCThe latest CAMS air quality forecasts for the UK are now available from the CERC website. The mapshows the forecast using the UK Daily Air Quality Index (DAQI).

ADMS 5.1 releasedADMS 5.1 was released to users with current licences and support contracts in June 2015. Theinnovative features of ADMS 5.1 are: changes to the criteria for visible plumes; a more advanced versionof the ADMS Mapper with additional functions; an increase to the number of output points which canbe included in a run; and a facility to both import and export sources, buildings and pollutants to andfrom the ADMS interface via .csv files.

New validation studies for CERC modelsCERC are currently working on new validation studies for urban and industrial sources. A new road noisebarrier study based on measurements in Phoenix, Arizona is being set up in ADMS-Urban as part of anongoing collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency. New studies relating to dispersionfrom road tunnel portals in the UK and Austria are also being examined using ADMS-Urban.Studies of dispersion from agricultural non-point sources are being carried out using ADMS 5 andAERMOD, under a contract from the Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling Liaison Committee. The existing ADMS 5 validation studies are being updated using ADMS 5.1 and will be available on theCERC website when completed.

The map shows pollution from four individualpollutants (nitrogen dioxide, ozone, andparticulates PM10 and PM2.5) and an overall value, which is the highest DAQI value from any pollutant.Forecasts are available for four days ahead. Anexample forecast is shown in the picture.

The UK CAMS forecasts shown in the map aretaken from the CAMS Regional Ensemble system.CAMS is a new EU-funded service thatconsolidates many years of preparatory researchand development that was funded by theEuropean Union in the form of the series of MACCprojects; MACC was a collaborative projectcoordinated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and operatedby a consortium of 36 members from 13 countries.Data from CAMS is freely available for anyone touse.

ADMS-URBAN & ADMS-ROADS MODELLING TIPS

Spatial truncation optionOne of the new features in ADMS-Urban 3.4, released in October 2014, is the spatial truncation option. This allows a spatial subset of the sources defined in a *.upl file to be run by the ADMS-Urban model.Practical uses of this new feature include the creation of models of smaller sub-regions, whereconcentrations are of particular interest, from a template *.upl file covering a larger area. Similarly, useof spatial truncation to split a model of a large urban area into smaller sub-regions in this way canimprove run efficiency, especially if each of the smaller *.upl files can be run simultaneously on amulti-core processor or on several PCs (if your licence option allows). Alternatively, it may be necessaryto split a model covering a very large area into sub-regions in order to remain within the licence limitsfor numbers of sources. Full details on how to use the spatial truncation option can be found in Section4.12 of the ADMS-Urban User Guide.

Time-varying *.fac fileAnother new feature in ADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads 3.4 is the facility to specify hourly factors for eachday of the week individually, using the 7-day diurnal profiles in a *.fac file. This is in addition to thestandard 3-day diurnal profile for weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To use this new feature

‘FacVersion3’ must be specified as the file version header in the *.fac. Full details can be found in theuser guide.

Modelling a building with a pitched roofADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads Extra use a single height to represent buildings. For buildings withpitched roofs, users may wish to carry out sensitivity tests using the minimum, average and maximumroof heights. This sensitivity testing is particularly important if the stack is located on the building andthe height difference between the stack and the building is small.

IAQM updated guidanceIn May, the Institute of Air Quality Management published updated guidance on assessing the air qualityimpacts of new developments: Land Use Planning & Development Control: Planning for Air Qualityhttp://www.iaqm.co.uk/text/guidance/air-quality-planning-guidance.pdf. The guidance includesrevised impact descriptors which are based on the percentage change in concentration relative to theair quality assessment level and the total concentration.

THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE TIPS

Adobe Acrobat .pdf search issueThe Find and Search tool results can be inaccurate in Adobe Acrobat if the document cache has becomecorrupted. This issue can be fixed by purging the cache. To do this open the Preferences screen (menuitem: Edit/Preferences), select Search from the list on the left and then click the Purge Cache Contentsbutton. Alternatively, the Enable fast find option can be unchecked. Further information about searchpreference options can be found on the Adobe website.

Surfer point plotting issueMicrosoft updates in May 2015 caused an issue in Surfer with plots containing symbols, which can affectthe ADMS tool for visualising run inputs in Surfer. If you obtain the Surfer error message: “GsDraw error(1): GenericError Module GsDraw, File Path.cpp, Line 953” a Microsoft patch will need to be applied tofix the issue. The patch can be obtained free of charge from Microsoft here. The computer will need tobe restarted for the patch to take effect.

Windows 7 software uninstall issueAn error message “Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified location exists and iswritable.” can be issued by Windows 7 when uninstalling a program due to an issue with the operatingsystem. This error can be fixed by stopping and starting the explorer.exe process in Task Manager asfollows:

1. Open Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar or pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL on the keyboardand selecting Start Task Manager.

2. Select the explorer.exe process and click the End Process button.3. Select File/New Task (Run...), type explorer.exe in the Create New Task box and click OK.

TrainingADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads training courses are run throughout the year at CERC in Cambridge.Customised training courses are also available to provide training tailored to your organisation’s exactrequirements. For example, a training course was run in May 2015 specifically aimed at local authoritiesand others who are involved in auditing and reviewing air quality reports for planning applications. Asimilar workshop on modelling aimed at auditing planning applications will be held later in the year. Please contact CERC if this is of interest to you.If you would like a customised training course focused on a particular topic or aspect of modelling, pleaselet us know.To find out more about our training courses please visit our website: www.cerc.co.uk/trainingIf you are interested in any of our training options please email us at [email protected]
