The school would like to acknowledge the finan-cial assistance of Cabonne Council and in particu-lar the efforts of Ms Sheryll Selwood who has worked tirelessly to ensure that out school has a memorable “Youth Week” celebration.

The Yeoval Rams cricket team got up early and travelled to Portland to play the first round cricket knockout. The Portland Pigs won the toss and sent us into bat; they must have sensed that we were allergic to the cold as we were all out for 23. Jake Monk showed real promise and top scored with 9 runs. The Portland side made the runs in 2 over’s and leaving the Rams to look forward to next year. Thanks to the parents that assisted with transport it was greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Sarah McCarthy who came 2nd in the Western Area Golf Champion-ships. She shot 95 off the stick which gave her a 69 Nett. Sarah also won the nearest to pin on the 5th

WHOLE SCHOOL LITERACY STRATEGY—TERM 1

In 2011, under our National Partnerships Plan, we have focused our attentions as a whole school on Liter-acy. We expect to see great improvements in the areas of reading, writing, grammar and punctuation and spelling across all classes, K-12. Our strategy for addressing Literacy needs across our school involves a number of key elements. The most significant change involves our commitment to implementing the Reading to Learn (R2L0 teaching strat-egy in all subject areas, K-12. The R2L teaching methodology provides teachers with a proven way to; en-gage learners, allow all students to access the curriculum at their stage level and to explicitly teach liter-acy skills. This change to our teaching requires step by step training and mentoring to ensure success. As all teachers are responsible for the teaching of literacy, all are supported by teacher mentors in R2L strate-gies. How are we doing this? In the classroom with teacher mentors modelling the process alongside the class teacher At planning and programming level; where teachers are able to work collaboratively to prepare

lessons that explicitly address the literacy needs of the class At the assessment level; where teachers work together to prepare and evaluate students’ writing,

using a detailed criteria. It has been an exciting term as the process has begun in a number of classes. Throughout the year there will be opportunities for all teachers to work with a mentor to develop strategies for teaching literacy in their class. Already we are seeing huge improvements in students’ writing and confidence in reading. They are so much more engaged in their lessons and are able to understand some amazing things! There are a number of people who are part of the Reading to Learn team in our school. Whole School Literacy Coordinator, Reading to Learn teacher mentor, 7-12—Jo Blatch Reading to Learn teacher mentor, K-6—Deb Blatch Currently undergoing initial training in Reading to Learn—Nathan Cluness and Helen Tremain On-going training in Reading to Learn—Jo Blatch and Deb Blatch. Term 2 will see our students sit the NAPLAN test for Literacy. All students have been preparing for the test and have had opportunities to develop their skills in all areas of literacy.

SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE Last Thursday Year 10 went to the Dubbo Science and Engineering Challenge hosted at the Dubbo Race Track. Present were many Central School students who had come from varying centres including Tottenham and Gulgong. Yeoval Central School students were combined with Dunedoo Central and began their challenges. Brittney Smith, Grant Iles, Lisa Poihakena-Jackson, Peta Morand and Alana Wirth were given the task to design and build a bridge that would allow trolleys and weights to progress over a test rig simulating the passing of gold across a ravine. Their design, though correct, only allowed the trolley to pass and no ingots but they had fun building the bridge and working with the two students from Dunedoo. The second group which included Alicia McConnell, Stephannie Mobbs, Izabella Molnar, Brenda Cole-Jerrard and Emily Henry had to design and build a hovercraft from limited materials. The hovercraft when completed needed to lift off the ground and move forward along a narrow path. This group were successful in building a hovercraft that worked reasonably well and earn’t some valuable points for our team. On the day both groups worked very well in their design process, the communication of ideas was great between team members and all the students were a credit to the school and to one another. A special thank you to the parents who helped transport the students to the Challenge in Dubbo.
