Last Friday, Coach Martin took his show on the road for a match up with the Meskwaki Warriors. The O’s left their mark, or shall I say marks—play after play, Warrior’s were removing grass from their facemasks after being brought down by the likes of Tyler Stewart & Jake Hulett. Springville manhandled the young squad & won the game 58-8. It was one sided from the start as Meskwaki players were battling cramps & injuries the entire evening, you couldn’t help but feel for them. It looked like a Varsity team whooping up on a group of Middle Schoolers, but with the win the O’s are 2 and 0. Doesn’t that sound nice? Say it with me; “2 and 0”. It took 55 seconds for the O’s to score. They forced a Warrior punt, then 5 plays & a 1st down later, scored their first 6 on a Drake Coonrod run. Meskwaki fumbled on their next possession & Jake Hulett was all over it which gave the O’s the ball on the Meskwaki 27 yard line. After a couple pass plays from Scriver to Coonrod & Nissen, the Orioles had first & goal on the 6 yard line & Nissen was in for the first of his 4 TD’s that evening. Things did not improve for the home team as Meskwaki muffed Allsup’s kick & Tyler Stewart pounced on it to put Springville on the Warrior 18 yard line. Again it was a Scriver pass to Coonrod for a Springville first, & again it was a Nissen run with another PAT by Allsup to give the O’s a 21-0 lead over the ailing Warrior’s. Meskwaki would get their best field position of the night on the next kick offstarting on their own 25 yard line. They ran a pass route that Coonrod picked off & the senior returned it 35 yards for another Oriole score. Just like that, it was a 28-0 lead with 4 minutes still remaining in the first quarter. The game continued in the same fashion as Meskwaki failed to find good field position, facing 3rd & long each possession. Coach Martin & the team went into half time with a 49-0 lead & returned in the second half with a continuous clock. Springville would score twice in the 3rd quarter, once on a Cody Blake safety & another on a 52 yard Nissen run from the scrimmage line for six. Meskwaki did find the end zone late in the 4th on a nice pass play over the middle & their attempt for 2 was good. The inevitable on-side however was swallowed up by Sophomore Wyatt Dlouhy & it was just a matter of ticks off the clock after that. All said? The Orioles had 357 yards of offense to Meskwaki’s 89. Junior Elias Nissen had 9 carries for 120 yards & 4 touch downs while senior Drake Coonrod had 5 carries for 64 yards & 2 touch downs, one of which came on his interception return. Junior Sam Scriver, able to rely on the running game, threw the ball only 5 times, but had 4 completions for a total of 54 yards. Friday’s win is no doubt a morale booster & when asked, Coach Martin spoke to the positives; “I thought that we did a great job coming out and being physical from the opening kick-off. We did a good job of executing our offense and containing on defense. I had a chance to see some things from some younger guys who might be able to help the varsity team in weeks to come. We also did a good job of limiting the mistakes we had, which allowed us to keep the momentum during the game.” And as always, I asked him what improvements he believes the guys need to work on; “We need to continue to try and play a full game which is sometimes hard to do when the score gets out of hand. We have not scored in the 4th quarter yet so we need to push through in the final period. That is something we are going to work on this week in preparation for CVC.” And speaking of Cedar Valley, who visits us this Friday, what are the keys to another Oriole win? “CVC is an inexperienced team but has a lot of decent athletes. This week we need to be worried about what WE do. If we execute on both sides of the ball we should be fine. There are some things we need to fine tune this week in preparation for the next couple of weeks. To do this, we need to control the line of scrimmage with our size and strength and limit the number of big plays they have.” And so we enter this Friday’s game with a 2 & 0 record, the only thing better than that? 3 and 0. Say it with me; “3 and 0”. Boy that would sound nice too. Allison Field will be the hub of activity FridayThe game will be televised on Channel 9.2what better way to start your weekend Oriole fans? LADY O’S VOLLEYBALL TESTS THE WATERS

One thing is for sure, your Lady “O” Volleyball team is full of enthusiasm. Coaches Eastman and Howard need not worry about motivation, desire and drive. They have it. Wins will follow. Last Saturday the girls played at Midland and faced the likes of Monticello, Bellevue Marquette, Cascade, Lisbon and the host, Midland. Fans were treated to the typical ebbs and flows of a volleyball match—strong rallies, power serves and the occasional time out to break momentum. But what Springville fans should look forward to is the sight of a team working extremely hard,

working together and enjoying every second of it. There were no wins to speak of, although the ladies won a game or two—but not a match. And that’s ok. It’s early, it’s time to see what they are made of and the answer is plain to see—they are made of strength. The wins will come and so will the accolades. Senior’s Emily Fay, Kayla Haverkamp and Sam Smith share the floor with a strong core of Junior’s, a Sophomore and oh yes—a Freshman too. You can catch your first glimpse of this team on Tuesday when they open their 2012 campaign with a road trip. Maquoketa Valley is their destination, 45.7 miles according to Rand McNally. Only an hour—take a drive and catch the game which starts with Fresh/Soph at 5:15. And next Thursday? Machovec Gymnasium will feature their home opener when the Pirates come to town. And I tell you, this team will bring you to your feet.

WEEKLY PICKS: Make your picks—who will win this week in 8-Man football?

W. Central at Valley of Elgin Midland at Preston Central of Elkader at Central City Cedar Valley at Springville Here’s what you do, choose your winners AND for the tie-breaker—pick the winner of the Iowa State/Iowa game AND the point differential. Send your picks and name to [email protected] with “Weekly Picks” as your subject, and catch next weeks issue to see who won bragging rights. Congratulations to Beau Zaruba, Jeff Menster and Nick Merritt as they all tied for the win in last weeks contest.

DID YOU NAME THIS “O”? Well not too many got this one right—actually not one person! Amber Nietert, Springville Elementary teacher is the lovely little gal pictured to the right. Oriole Pride finally stumped some folks.

CRAZY SCHOOL OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, but this week, here’s a dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary name—not nick name. Byfield, Massachusetts is home to what is now called “The Governor’s Academy” but up until the year 2005, it was called “Governor Dummer Academy”. Fearing the name was harming enrollment, the boarding school dropped Drummer from its title. The athletic teams are called the Governor’s and wear the colors Cardinal and White. Esteemed alumni include former professional athletes Steve Bucknall, Dan Gadzuric, Benn Ferriero and Robert Francois. Oh—and tuition only runs $48,550 a year… a year at Princeton is $49,000. Sure does make Springville fees look pretty reasonable don’t you think?

JV FALLS TO DON BOSCO A 3 day weekend that starts and ends with Oriole Football is every Oriole Fan’s dream. A rare, Labor Day football game featured the visiting Don Bosco JV squad and your Springville Orioles took place Monday evening during on and off again rain. Battling through injuries and some players filling new positions, the O’s fell, 32-12. Coach Smalley was happy with the efforts as “the entire team did a good job of “holding the rope” as we have been talking about since day one of this season. They made sure not to let their teammates down by continuing to fight for the entire game despite being down for the entire

game. It was good to see them come out strong in the second half.” And in order to improve, “we still need to make sure everyone is together on every play. You can see when one player doesn’t execute their assignment, and that is when the play doesn’t perform as smoothly as it should have. We still need to take care of the small things so the big things start taking care of themselves, but that comes with experience, which we gain a lot from this game due to multiple injuries and a unique situation.” The team has time to recuperate from some minor injuries before they play at Midland on Saturday, September 15 for a 10am game.
