NAME THIS “O” Oriole Pride starts a new feature you can watch for from time to time. A “guess who” of sorts. Can you name this week’s featured Oriole? No, not a student and no, not an alumni. This lovely lady is a teacher at Springville schools. Care to take a guess as to who she is? Look for the answer in next week’s issue. Would you like a hint? Her last name is ALSO the name of a town in the state of Wyoming. Good luck.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

North Linn was in town on Monday and the Springville boys split a pair of games, losing the 7th grade game, but winning the 8th grade game. The boys will be at home again on Thursday, February 10th at 4:00 when Ed-Co comes to town.

LADY ORIOLES HAVE PLENTY LEFT IN THE TANK Post season play isn’t too far off. The Lady Orioles will square off against Belle Plaine AT Belle Plaine next Thursday for the opening of Regional play. At this point in the season your place in the conference is most likely set—& so what one looks for now, is consistent, heads up, intense play. The girls had back to back games last Friday & Saturday. On Friday it was a road game at Cascade, & despite turning the ball over 27 times, the girls had their chances. Down 9 points at the half, they would cut it to 1 by the end of the 3rd, but as Coach Sanderson said, “we would get no closer than that”. Senior Hannah Loehr and Junior CJ Fitzgerald led the O’s with 9 and 8 points each. On Saturday, if you didn’t come out to the game you sure did miss a good one. The brazen, 12-5 Lone Tree Lions paid us a visit & went home a stunned & silent, 12-6. When asked about the significance of this win, Coach Sanderson had this to say; “This was a HUGE win for us! Lone Tree is a very solid basketball team and a

team that many believe has a great chance to battle for a spot at the state tournament. Defensively, we did a great job keeping the basketball out of Courtney Burr's hands. Burr was the Player of the Year in her conference last season, and came into the game averaging just under 20 points per game. Fish (Sam Fitzgerald) guarded her for much of the night, and together with help from her teammates, we were able to hold her to just 3 points (the lowest scoring night of her career). On the offensive end, Hannah Loehr had a season-high 19 points to go along with 18 rebounds. She absolutely dominated the paint. Though we struggled from the line at the end, we made just enough free throws to put the game away”. This week continues to test the Orioles, as Alburnett visits on Friday & the girls will wrap up their regular season when Monticello visits on Monday. Lets hope the momentum continues, come on out & show your support.

BOYS BENCH GETTING SHORTER AND SHORTER What is worse than having one injured player? You got it—two injured players. Last week we lost the leadership & talent of Senior guard Brennan Starry, & this past weekend the boys were without the play of Senior Joel Lam. In these cases you hope for someone to step up & if I had to name such a player, I’d go with Freshman Elias Nissen. He’s had good minutes all season long but as of late he’s been the spark that could be a sign of things to come for the future of Coach Merritt’s program. And yes, those signs are all good. Like the girls, the boys too have been paired off for their first tournament game—it will be a match up against conference foe Central City, AT Central City on February 14th—so tell your sweetheart right now, your evening plans absolutely must include a ball game. Friday, the boys faced the 15-1 Cascade Cougars & it was a tough one from the start. Cold shooting & 22 turnovers were contributors to the 66-26 loss. Nissen was led scorers with 8 points & 4 boards while the team work horse, Jake Hulett finished with 7 points & 5 boards.

In Saturdays game against Lone Tree, if you would have told me we’d have two kids with double/double’s & we’d shoot 42% from the field—I would have had one thought, WIN. Well, not so—the guys gave up a hard fought loss to a tough,

Lions team, 54-46. Hulett had a monster of a night with 21 points & 12 rebounds, while Nissen followed suit with 14 points & 15 rebounds. Senior Patrick Ray dished out 4 assists & added 5 points, but the Orioles came up short & took another loss on the season. Springville will regroup & look to finish strong with 3 home stands: Alburnett this Friday, Monticello on Monday & Ed-Co (which will be boys action only) on Tuesday. Come on out & cheer them on.
