Springville senior, Dakota Richards took the mat at the District championship, the pre-cursor to the state tournament in hopes of earning a trip to the Wells Fargo Arena. DK, who wrestles at 215, drew a first round match with Jacob Kerr of Wapello. Dakota entered with a 19-19 record while Kerr had a 24-14 record. The two faced one another on one of two mats in the gym and it was intense to say the least. Dakota lost his first round match and with it fell to the runner up bracket. In his second match he faced Harry Miller of Lone Tree and battled hard, but lost the match and ended his season with an overall record of 19-21. Dakota had an impressive year and Springville can be proud of the way he represented his school and community. GIRLS GET BIG WIN—THEN TAKE ONE ON THE CHIN The highs and lows, the ebbs and flows. Post season basketball brings plenty of drama and Springville had its fair share this past week. Last Thursday our girls traveled to Belle Plaine to take on the host in their first round match up of the 2011 Regional tournament. It was a great game and sadly, one that wasn’t seen by enough Oriole fans. Down 24-18 at the half, Springville regrouped in the 3rd quarter and came out with better shot selection and a tighter defense that forced Belle Plaine to look for the outside shot and abandon their inside game. Abbie Neff, C.J. Fitzgerald and Katie Wyman combined for 9 steals that helped shift the tempo in Springville’s favor. The 4th quarter started with the Lady O’s on top, 34-32, but in a game with so many lead changes, nothing could be taken for granted. Let’s allow Coach Sanderson to wrap up the evenings outcome: "What a thrilling ending to a hard-fought basketball game tonight. Belle Plaine came out very aggressively in the first half, pounding the ball inside to their post players which we really struggled to guard. Hannah Loehr picked up her second foul early in the 1st quarter, and sat for the rest of the half. Fortunately, we were able to hang around by hitting some shots at the offensive end. In the second half we switched defenses and went to a 2-3 zone to try and clog the middle of the lane with bodies. That helped slow down Belle Plaine's inside game as we went on a 16-4 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Nursing a 5 point lead with 3:00 to go, we rushed a couple of shots and turned the ball over, as Belle Plaine regained the lead by going on a 7-0 run. Down 42-40 with less than a minute left, we got a defensive stop and Brittney Oxley hit a 14 foot jump shot from the baseline to tie the game. Belle Plaine again failed to score, and we took possession with 18 seconds left. After passing the ball around, Abbie Neff hit her third three pointer of the game as the buzzer sounded to give us the 45-42 win, and the right to advance to the second round. Both teams played with a lot of heart and refused to give up. We were fortunate to get a good look at the basket as time expired.” And to Abbie Neff’s credit, she bore the brunt of the student sections wrath all night long, so if you had to pick a kid to hit that shot—it was due justice that it fell to her. Neff led her team with 12 points while freshman Sam Fitzgerald added 9. Thursday’s win set up a rematch with Central City on Tuesday, Feb. 15 in Lisbon. Springville did its best to make it a home game by calling for a “black out” and the fans came through. First year Coach, Nate Sanderson summarized the game with the following comments: "We came out of the

gates cold offensively last night, going the first seven minutes without scoring, and fell behind 8-0. From that point forward, we essentially played an even ball game. In the second quarter we crawled to within 6 at the half. Tanya Hendrickson of Central City really gave us problems inside all night long. In the second half, Hannah Loehr exploded for 15 points going 7-7 from the field to bring us back within 4 with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately, we could not get stops when we desperately needed them, and Central City made their free throws in the final minutes to seal the 48-42 victory. As I told our kids in the locker room after the game, I couldn't be more proud of a team for how we competed last night and for the improvement we've shown during the second half of the season. After starting the year 2-8 we really turned a corner in January to finish the second half with a winning record at 7-6. We overcame a lot of obstacles this year with the transition to a new coach, various injuries, and the like. The Oriole Fanatics out there should be very proud of the way we finished the year, and the enthusiasm that we've generated for girls basketball throughout our program. I thought our crowd was awesome last night, and the support we have received throughout the season has meant a lot to our coaches and players. Finally, our players are to be commended for their effort this year. They invested A LOT of time working in the gym and watching film. Our JV team had a good year finishing 9-9 and did a

great job helping to get the varsity team ready for their final games. We've established a good foundation to build on this off-season. There will be more good things to come in the Springville girls basketball program!" Springville has 3 graduating seniors and were led in scoring by Hannah Loehr with 15 points, Katie Wyman who tallied 7 and Abbie Neff who tossed in 6. Junior C.J. Fitzgerald had 9 points. The Lady O’s finished the year with an overall record of 9-14 and finished 7th in the Tri-Rivers Conference with a 6-10 record. “Oriole Fanatics”, I rather like that—perhaps we should get the signage ready for next year(?).

SPRINGVILLE BOYS END AS THEY STARTED—ANOTHER GUTSY PERFORMANCE You can’t tell me Central City wasn’t nervous. Their crowd was quiet and the glances the players gave one another showed the ir fear. Springville did not go down lightly on Monday when they traveled North for their 3rd match up this season with the Wildcats. It was a tie game at the end of the 1st quarter, 10-10. At the half? Springville was down 21-20. In the 3rd quarter, the Orioles struggled to score, only putting 8 on the board and trailed Central City 35-28. At the start of the 4th quarter the O’s came out with renewed intensity but the Wildcats controlled the tempo and the ball and beat Springville 46-37. Balanced scoring, balanced rebounding and tenacity on defense kept the guys in the game, but they couldn’t come up with the points at the end. Senior Joel Lam led his team with 5 rebounds and chipped in 4 points, fellow senior Patrick Ray finished

with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists while freshman Elias Nissen led his team in points with 9 but also put up 5 blocks on the night. Sophomore Jake Hulett tossed in 8 points and brought down 4 rebounds. Coach Merritt said, “Unfortunately we came up a little short against Central City. We really did not shoot the ball well and had a couple of mental lapses that ultimately cost us. The thing that I was the most proud of was our effort on game night and the practices leading up to the game. Everyone worked extremely hard and we felt like we had the right mentality going into the game. It'll be extremely difficult to replace seniors like Joel, Patrick, and Brennan as they are great people. I've coached them for the past 6 years so it's extra tough for me to see them go. However, our future is bright and the leadership those three guys gave us will pay dividends down the road." Springville finishes the year with an overall record of 4-18, 3-13 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

The Springville youth basketball teams have been settling in quite nicely at the community gym in Mt. Vernon. Each of the past 4 Saturdays have featured games with at least two of our teams playing. Lisbon, Mt. Vernon and Springville have teams in grades 2 through 6 competing each week in a league that will wrap up this upcoming Saturday. These future O’s continue to grow as players and young men. Great job to all the boys, their coaches and their families that have been a part of this.
