6TH GRADE TRAVEL TEAM CLEANS UP AT CENTRAL CITY TOURNAMENT

Coach Sanderson has got to be counting the days until this group hits high school. They have those magical ingredients—intensity and emotion which leads to wins and they picked up three more and another medal at Central City last Saturday. First they dominated Cascade, winning, 23-8. Then they easily handled Linn-Mar, 24-12 and wrapped up their day with a 20-11 win over Cedar Rapids Jeffer-son in the championship game. They held their opponents to an average of just over 9 points folks. 9 points. That is good defense. Congratulations to the girls and their new title. JV BASKETBALL NEVER DISAPPOINTS

This time of year, we all need more time in a day—but especially in basketball season when JV games start so early, I sure wish there was a way to push their start times back so more people could get there and catch a game. The girls open up a night of action as early as 4 to 4:45 pm. Maybe next year we can ask Santa for some help on that—but as the season progresses it has been so much fun to watch the JV teams grow as they gain more experience and develop their skills that will take them to the next level. Do your best to make it for a game or two, I give you my word, you’ll have a great time.

LADY O’S MOVE TO 3-5 WITH A SOLID WIN OVER STARMONT

Coach Sanderson and the girls rebounded from a tough loss to undefeated North Linn on Friday by taking care of Starmont, 47-32. In Friday’s loss, the O’s did a much better job of taking care of the ball but couldn’t stop the Lynx from hitting the outside shot. “Our effort was outstanding. Game by game, we continue to get gradually better”, commented Coach Sanderson. Tuesday, a winless Starmont Stars team visited Machovec gymnasium and the girls pounced immediately taking a 17-7 lead in the 1st quarter. “Defensively, we really did a great job keeping the ball out of the lane. I think Starmont only a couple attempts inside the painted area. Offensively, we really took care of the ball well tonight as we finished with a season-low 11 turnovers”, added Coach Sanderson. The O’s were once again lead in scoring by Sarah Matus. She’s the spark we need and she finished with 18 (5 from behind the arc) and senior C.J. Fitzgerald had a great defensive game with 4 steals and 10 points to boot. The girls will be in action at Durant on Thursday.

Quickly earning a reputation—freshman Sarah Matus launches one on Friday against N. Linn.

Sophomore Samantha “Fish” Fitzgerald looks inside.

DID YOU KNOW? The O’s are 3-1 when Sarah Matus scores 12 or more points…

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. Kuna, Idaho—population 16,100 is just outside of Boise. The town feature’s two high school’s, one of which is known as “The Kavemen”. Their inner-city rival are the Diamondbacks of Initial Point high school. Their school colors are black and gold and all traditional sports are offered. Each require tryouts and fees to participate, and each have their own individual booster club. Pretty advanced for a bunch of Kavemen.

FACE IN THE CROWD This week’s Face In The Crowd is Springville Superintendent Terry Rhinehart who was spotted at the Starmont game. What are some of your memorable Christmas gifts? Ice Skates, Dean-O the Dinosaur and a Train Engine Do you prefer a white Christmas? Or do you prefer to not have snow? White Christmas Do you have a real or artificial tree? Real What is your favorite Christmas treat? Fudge What is your favorite Christmas movie? It’s a Wonderful Life

Thanks Mr. Rhinehart—you just never know, at the next Springville event YOU could be more than a Face In The Crowd!

The next issue of Oriole Pride will be delivered January 11, 2012.

Please have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

BOYS WIN A TIGHT ONE AND MOVE TO 4-3 WITH STARMONT WIN

It’s always a good thing when you can win a close one and if you were anywhere near the Springville city limits you heard the roar of the crowd when Elias Nissen pulled down the rebound of an errant Starmont shot, sealing a 48-47 win on Tuesday evening. This puts the O’s at 4-3 overall, 3-3 in conference play. Dan Fitzgerald continued his hot shooting as he led the Oriole’s with 20 points (3 of 4 from the 3 point line) while Jake Hulett who can’t shake the popularity factor with the officials, had to take an early seat—but managed to finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Coach Merritt said “I thought we did a great job of showing some resilience when times got tough. They were very physical and we were able to play strong at times. Dan Fitzgerald hit some huge shots early to keep us in it and then the rest of our guards did a great job of pounding the ball into our posts as the game wore on to help finish them off”. This was, like the girls, a good bounce back win for the boys after suffering a miserable 54-19 loss to North Linn last Friday. The boys will travel to Durant on Thursday before enjoying the holiday break.
