SPRINGVILLE LOST A GOOD ONE

Oriole Legend’s have always been a fun experience these past couple of years, and I am saddened to say there is one that got away. Bill Cooper passed away last week and he was on my list of Springville graduates that I had hoped to reach out to. Most of you know him as our former Mayor, a title he was proud to have and rightly so. I came to know him through Kirkwood when we were part of the same division. Bill was always good for a smile, a joke and a hearty laugh. I will miss him greatly. William Dean Cooper graduated from Springville High School in 1964. That year featured a total of 29 senior’s and wouldn’t you know? Susan Vincik was among them. You know Susan, she’s the gal that went on to become Mrs. William Cooper. As an Oriole, Bill participated in basketball, baseball and track. The boys basketball squad that year won the Tri-River’s Conference Title. That season had many big wins including a 61-59 win over Linn-Mar on Friday Night followed by a 76-59 win over Center Point on Saturday. TRACK SEASON BEGINS

Springville enters this spring track season with a new, girls varsity coach—Steve Pershing. Coach Pershing is no stranger to the team though, as he has been the cross country coach for the past 7 years. Three senior’s will lead the Lady O’s this season. C.J. Fitzgerald qualified for state last year in the 400 hurdles. Jamie Donaldson leads the 4 x 200 relay that just missed qualifying for state last season. And Carly Robertson (pictured right) will again throw the shot and discus. Coach Pershing also has high expectations for Junior

Angie Hoogland who qualified for state competition in cross country this past fall. “This season’s team also has a strong core of talented underclassmen that make it a more complete squad as well as more competitive” said Coach Pershing. On the boys side, Claude Howard begins his second season as the boys varsity coach and he is looking forward to a great group of returners. Junior Jake Hulett (pictured left) looks to return and improve his own personal performances after last year which wrapped up with a state appearance after qualifying in the shot and discus. Sophomore Elias Nissen will also be looking for some personal bests. He qualified last year in the long jump. Coach Howard says, “I have 5 returning athletes and 7 freshman athletes. I have been very pleased with the work ethic of the freshman. I conducted time trials last week and believe we will be faster than we were last season in our sprint events and have some good mid distance runners. Though athlete numbers are still too low to expect any meet championships, I believe we will be more competitive over all in our meets. Our freshman will get a lot of work this season. I am really pleased with the overall effort and ability of the athletes”. Both teams kick off their season at the Cornell Conference Indoor meet this Friday in Mt. Vernon. 4:45 is start time.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK NUMBERS LOOKING GOOD

First year school nurse Vincent Abel is also this year’s first year Middle School girls track coach. Coach Abel reports that he has 17 girls out this season and they open up on the road at Starmont, Tuesday April 10. On the boys side, Jared Baumann will lead the Middle School team that has a strong mix of 7th and 8th graders.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. This week we feature Millbury High School in Millbury, Massachusetts. The “Woolies” have just 150 students in grades 9-12 and compete in the usual athletic competitions like football, basketball and so on. Their baseball team won the state championship in 1993 and their girls basketball team qualified for state in 2009. They have school colors of burgundy and gold and their student section is affectionately known as the “Wild and Wookies”. Conference foes include The Sutton Sammies and the Nashoba Chieftains. The community of Millbury even has a video—no it isn’t Wooly Bully—but you can check it out at http://youtu.be/tZOf0f3O1AI

DID YOU KNOW? The 1965 hit, Wooly Bully was written and performed by Sam The Sham and The Pharoahs. According to band member “Sam” (Domingo Samudio) who wrote the song, his pet cat was named Wooly Bully, and he gave him the idea for the song.

VOLLEYBALL GOES CLUBBING IN DES MOINES AREA

While most of you were enjoying this unseasonably beautiful weather last weekend, Springville sent two club teams to compete in the Iowa Regional Volleyball tournament—indoors of course. Between the Events Center and Southeast Polk schools, the black and orange had someone playing in each session. Talent of all levels was on display and the O’s held their own. It exposed the girls to some new competition as well as provided a new venue for the girls to bond as team mates. Jordan Creek Mall has that effect on teen agers.

THE FAMOUS AMONG US… OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT Now call me silly, but there are some people who walk among us, and they turn a head or two. And those heads are turned because they remind us of someone from time to time. This week let’s take a look at Springville Sophomore, Kolton Markley. Tell me, doesn’t he look like Dallas Maverick Dirk Nowitski? I realize the uniform gives it away, but look to the right—that is down right creepy!

LADY O’S HOLD BASKETBALL BANQUET Several secrets were revealed Tuesday night when the girls basketball team gathered to celebrate another season of Oriole basketball. Parents learned of the player’s favorite moments, high lights and memories as the girls shared their stories. Like what you ask? Well, Coach Sanderson has a 3 Crispito limit and Coach Eastman, apparently she likes to run “drags”, and the girls—I guess they can’t whistle so instead of cat-calls, they give MEOWS. It was a great evening of statistics, stories and honor. The Oriole’s lose two seniors in Hannah O’Brien and C.J. Fitzgerald. Both girls will leave big holes in the team next year but they’ve challenged the girls to step up, work hard and maintain enthusiasm. As a team, Coaches Sanderson and Eastman praised the group for obtaining the 3 goals they set out to: Win 10 games, go 3-0 in Rivalry match-ups and get to the 2nd round of the play offs. All great accomplishments for a team that finished 10-13 in a new system in its second year. Both C.J. Fitzgerald and Sarah Matus were named to the Iowa Basketball Coaches Region

5 team. Fitzgerald also tabbed Academic All-State honors, only the 2nd player in Springville history to do so. The girls also voted on team awards, and the winners were as follows:

Lug-Nut—Kerrigan Riley CHEESE—Sarah Matus

Team 1st—Hannah O’Brien Extra Mile—Rachel Gloeckner Hustle—Samantha Fitzgerald

Defensive Stopper—C.J. Fitzgerald 6th Man—Daisha Hall

Most Improved—Tracy Kilburg Most Valuable Player—C.J. Fitzgerald
