32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

During the month of November, the Church encourages us to pray for the faithful departed with the hope not only of meeting them in heaven, but with the hope of the Resurrection of the dead, as we say every Sunday in the Creed.

It is fitting, then, that we are presented with this gospel passage as the liturgical year winds down to a close. The Sadducees question is absurd, and leads us to think that 1) they are trying to trick Jesus, and 2) they neither believe in nor understand the Resurrection. But… do we understand? Perhaps we are tempted, as they were, to see the Resurrection as a prolongation of this life, just better, with no sickness or death. But from Jesus’ reply we gather that it’s not that at all. And this is hard for us to understand, used as we are to our present reality. Yet, it should increase our hope, for our God “is not God of the dead but of the living, for to him all are alive” (Lk 20:38). Even those who have preceded us in death are alive to him—and to us, in the Communion of the Saints.

Let us ask the Lord to increase our hope and to “direct our hearts to the love of God” as St. Paul says in the second reading (2 Thess 2:35), that we may at the Resurrection be counted among those alive in him. God bless you.

Reflexión Dominical Durante el mes de noviembre, la Iglesia nos invita a orar por los

fieles difuntos con la esperanza, no solo de encontrarnos de nuevo en el cielo, sino con la esperanza en la Resurrección de los muertos, como decimos en el Credo cada domingo.

Al acercarnos al final del año litúrgico encontramos este pasaje del evangelio, con la absurda pregunta de los saduceos que nos lleva a pensar que 1) tratan de enredar a Jesús, y 2) que ni creen ni entienden de la Resurrección. Pero… ¿acaso comprendemos nosotros? Tal vez sintamos la misma tentación que ellos; la de ver la Resurrección como prolongación de esta vida, solo que sin enfermedad ni muerte. La respuesta de Jesús indica que no se trata de esto. Cosa difícil de comprender, acostumbrados como estamos a nuestra realidad presente. Esto no obstante, debería aumentar nuestra esperanza, pues nuestro Dios “no es Dios de muertos sino de vivos, pues para él todos viven” (Lc 20, 38). Hasta aquellos que nos han precedido en la muerte están vivos en él—y vivos para nosotros en la Comunión de los Santos.

Pidamos al Señor que aumente nuestra esperanza y que “dirija nuestro corazón para que amemos a Dios”, como dice San Pablo en la segunda lectura (2Tes 2,35), para que al llegar la Resurrección seamos contados entre los que están vivos en él. Que Dios los bendiga.

The 40 Hours Devotion (II) A BIT OF HISTORY. No one knows exactly when 40 Hours Devotion actually

began. However, historical consensus supports its origin in the 16th century in Milan, Italy. St. Anthony Zaccaria, St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius of Loyola are credited with promoting 40 Hours Devotion there in 1530. In 1539, Pope Paul III was asked to and did approve an indulgence (a partial or total remission of the temporal punishment for sins) for those individuals who participated in the Devotion. By 1550, St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius Loyola were instituting 40 Hours Devotion in Rome.

In 1560, Pope Paul IV issued a Papal Bull or decree supporting the 40 Hours Devotion; the practice at the time was for the Devotion to be scheduled at all the different churches throughout a diocese so that the devotions were taking place continuously on a scheduled and rotating basis. In 1592, Pope Clement VIII formalized this process in a letter entitled “Graves et Diuturnae”. He also issued regulations for the devotions. In 1705, Pope Clement XI collected these regulations and officially issued them to the Church in a document entitled “Instructio Clementia”.

La devoción de las 40 Horas (II) UN POCO DE HISTORIA. Nadie sabe exactamente cuándo comenzó la

devoción de las 40 Horas. Sin embargo, existe un consenso que data su origen a Milán, Italia, durante el siglo 16. Se dice que San Antonio Zaccaria, San Felipe Neri y San Ignacio de Loyola promovieron la devoción de las 40 Horas en esa ciudad en 1530. En 1539, se pidió al Papa Pablo III que aprobara una indulgencia (remisión total o parcial de la pena temporal que conllevan nuestros pecados) para aquellos individuos que participaran en dicha devoción, lo cual el Papa aprobó. November is Stewardship Month in the Archdiocese of Miami. The Sadducees,

who did not believe in a resurrection after life, asked who will be married to the widow of the seven brothers in the next world. Jesus responded that earthly marriage as such, does not exist in heaven where all are alive in God, and are like angels. As faithful stewards, our salvation is a tremendous gift to us who strive to use our God-given talents to do His will here on earth. Noviembre es el Mes de la Mayordomía en la Arquidiócesis de Miami. Holy Lives/Vidas Santas SERVANT OF GOD MAURICIO JIMÉNEZ , SJ (1881-

1954) — Born into a humble family of shepherds, Mauricio learned to love the Blessed Virgin by praying the rosary at the chapel of Our Lady of Ulagares, patroness of his hometown. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus and was ordained to the priesthood on July 27, 1913. In Spain Fr. Mauricio was rector of the school the Jesuits had in Orihuela between 1915-1924. He was then sent as novice master to the Jesuit novitiate in Veruela. He was sent to Argentina six years later in the same capacity.

Fr. Mauricio was novice master in Córdoba for 18 years. During that time he was also twice Rector of the Holy

Family School, which served a working class neighborhood. His work in education, hospital care and administering spiritual exercises was extensive. Having finished his term as rector in Cordoba, Fr. Mauricio was sent to Montevideo in 1948, where he was rector of the Diocesan Seminary for four years. After that, he returned to Buenos Aires, where he died on December 8, 1954, the centennial of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. His last words were: “I rejoiced when I heard them say, let us go to the house of the Lord”.

SIERVO DE DIOS MAURICIO JIMÉNEZ, SJ (1881-1954) — Nació en una humilde familia de pastores y aprendió a amar a la Virgen rezando el rosario en la ermita de Nuestra Señora de Ulagares, patrona de su pueblo natal. Entró al noviciado de la Compañía de Jesús y se ordenó sacerdote el 27 de Julio de 1913. En España el P. Mauricio fue rector del Colegio de Orihuela desde 1915 hasta 1924, cuando fue enviado como maestro de novicios al noviciado jesuita de Veruela. Seis años más tarde lo enviaron a Argentina en la misma capacidad.

El P. Mauricio fue maestro de novicios en Córdoba durante 18 años; al mismo tiempo fue rector dos veces del Colegio de la Sagrada Familia, en un barrio obrero. Su labor educativa, hospitalaria y de ejercicios espirituales fue extensa. Terminado su tiempo como rector en Córdoba, el P. Mauricio fue enviado a Montevideo en 1948 y allí fue rector del seminario diocesano por cuatro años, al cabo de los cuales regresó a Buenos Aires, donde murió el 8 de diciembre de 1954, centenario de la proclamación del dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción. Sus últimas palabras fueron: “¡Que alegría cuando me dijeron: vamos a la Casa del Señor!”

The invocation could well be limited to this first

part; that would have been nice. But instead Jesus

joins it to a second expression that forms one with

the first. The vertical relationship with benevolence

on God’s part refracts and is called to translate into a

new relationship with our brothers and sisters: a

horizontal relationship. The good God invites all of us

to be good. The two parts of the invocation are linked

together with a stern conjunction: we ask the Lord to

forgive our debts, our sins, ‘as’ we forgive our

friends, the people who live with us, our neighbors,

the people who have done something bad to us.

The School celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a Pep Rally, visits from the police and fire departments and presentations by the Florida Department of Health and Human Services and the American Heart Association. We also had the opportunity to thank Captain Camina and Eddy Rodríguez, the paramedics who responded to our call to help Dr. Mallet last year. A special thank you to Mrs. Mendiola, Mrs. Vila, Mrs. Fernández, Coach Pina and the Red Ribbon Committee.
