Prayer Before Mass

Come Holy Spirit and quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. I am saint and sinner. Open my ears to Your words. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my eyes to see Your mystery in symbol and sign. Open my heart in love for You and my neighbor. Quiet the thoughts and distrac ons that will keep me from prayer. Strengthen me to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Notes from Fr. Joe Wormek Thanks to all who worked to make our Sau-sage Dinner such a success. Special thanks to Danny & Amanda Williams, Chairs, and Tyler Beste & Haley Russell, Dining Room chairs.

These events are always an opportunity for us to gather as a parish family outside of Mass. This coming Friday, November 1, is one of the five holydays of obliga on for all Catholics to a end Mass, besides every Sun-day. It is considered a serious obliga on to a end. We will have four Masses for your convenience. 4:30 pm. on Thursday, October 31 and 7 am, noon and 7 pm on Friday, November 1. As I have men oned before, for convenience we could just have one mass that would fill our church, but that would cause an inconvenience for some people. Do you remember what the Five Holydays of Obliga on are? They are: November 1, All Saint’s Day; December 8, Immacu-late Concep on of Mary; December 25, Christmas; January 1, Solemnity of Mary, and August 15, the Assump on of Mary into heaven. The feast of the Ascension has been moved to the following Sunday during the Easter Season. As has been the Archdiocesan direc ve for several years, we have been taking a count of the people a ending mass here for the last three weekends. We had 1007 on Oct. 5 & 6, 1107 on Oct. 12 & 13, and 1024 on Oct. 19 & 20. This comes to an aver-age of 1044 for the three weeks. Last year we averaged 1014 for the three weekends, which means we were up 30 on the average per week. Deacon Leon has started his Bible Study on the Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6:45 p.m. in the choir room in Jesuit Hall. The bible study will con nue for 8 weeks on the Le er of St. Paul to the Romans. Thanks for all you do!!! Fr. Joe Wormek

Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Think-ing your time is so valuable, your talent is better than any-one else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be hum-bled by God’s abundant generosity and our hearts should overflow with gratitude.

ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUIS OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the United States today, numerous Catholic sisters, broth-ers, and religious order priests past age 70 benefit from the Re rement Fund for Religious collec on. Dona ons to this spe-cial collec on provide funding that helps religious communi es care for senior members and plan for long-term re rement needs. Next weekend, November 2-3, all parishes in the Archdio-cese of St. Louis will take up the annual collec on for the Re-

rement Fund for Religious, an opportunity for you to acknowledge the thousands of senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests for their faithful service. Whether or not we realize it, we are all beneficiaries of the tremendous contribu ons these women and men have made to the Church in the United States. Through hard work, prayer, and sacrifice, they built Catholic schools and hospitals, ini ated programs to promote social jus ce, and ministered to the neediest among us. Today, many religious communi es struggle to care for their elderly members. Elder sisters, brothers, and religious order priests dedicated their lives to service and prayer, and some lack adequate re rement savings. Increasing health-care costs and decreased income make it difficult to provide necessary medical care, costly medica ons and basic services. Please consider making a financial gi to assist with the care of our senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Many thanks for considering this request. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 27, 2019

Dear Parish Families, I found this ar cle informa ve, and pray you will as well. Have a meaning-ful holiday! A CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER: Halloween, All Saint’s and All Souls Day: A Triple Celebra on For parents of children in today’s world of commercial or scary Hallow-een characters it is even more important to know the history of the Catholic/Chris an tradi on of All Hallow de, Hallow de or Hallowmas, as you establish your home tradi ons and set the values on which your family decisions are based. We know that it is educa onally important to be able to explain to chil-dren where a tradi on/decisioncomes from in building family prac ces and expecta ons, which is why it is founda onal to faith development for your children to know that Halloween is part of our Catholic faith tradi on. Dressing up for Halloween comes from the French, Jack-O-Lanterns come from the Irish tradi on (originally turnips), and begging for treats comes from the English tradi on of going door to door begging for “soul cakes”, promising to pray for a family’s loved ones. The missing link that you as parents are called to create and honor is the connec on between All Saint’s and All Soul’s Day with Halloween. All Saint’s Day is a Holy Day of Obliga on and part of the three days known as the “Days of the Dead”. The La n American tradi on of celebra ng the Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos) also has become popular in the United States. This holiday falls on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 and is a me of pray-er and remembrance of friends and family members who have died. All Saint’s Day and All Souls Day give your family the opportunity to pray for and remember the deceased members of your family, similar to el Dia de los Muertos. It is a great opportunity to share memories and stories of their lives, their inspira onal traits and the integrity of their faith life in shaping who you are as parents. It is also an opportunity to talk about the heroes of the Catholic Church. In this day and age of Marvel comic superheroes and Disney movie charac-ter costumes, we have the chance to talk about real heroes that have changed the world for the be er by how they lived their lives: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mar n de Porres, St. Maximilian Kolbe, to name a few. One of the “treats” for the Days of the Dead, could be a book on the lives of the saints, holy cards to honor their patron saints or a saint of inspira on in their lives, or a book about a saint and the difference his or her ac ons made in this world. The tradi onal Halloween celebra ons do not need to be shied away from, but balanced in the context of our faith and the events that surround us. A ending Mass as a family or as part of a school Mass, or the opportu-ni es for saint’s par es, filled with cra s and service ac vi es are a great beginning to blending the commercial and the faith-filled observance of these Catholic Church days of tradi on and obliga on. Fall fes val par es or Harvest Fes vals are all possible op ons and alterna ves. You can check out the Catholic Toolbox for games and cra s and print-ready materials. You can review educa onworld.com for ideas from UNICEF and there is always Chris an Pinterest for a Chris an Halloween. The key to this celebra on is that we work to e together the under-standing of where Halloween has its origin and beginning and how it starts the celebra on of real world superheroes of the church and the people we aspire to be in this complex world. This short prayer helps us remember the saints and souls and es to-gether these three fall events: Father, All-Powerful and Ever-Living God, we rejoice in the holy men and women of every me and place. May their prayers bring us your for-giveness and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Your partner in learning and faith, Mrs. Pahl, Principal

SFB Library Book Review Book: Lukewarmness: the Devil in Disguise By: Francis Carvajal Only hours a er the Last Supper, Peter openly renounced the Lord. As the Lord looked at Peter, he remembered the word of the Lord and went out and wept bi erly. Peter wept bi erly because he knew how to love. Soon enough he found that the sweetness of love supplanted the bi erness of sorrow. This is the story of every person who, a er an offense be it big or small, truly repents and weeps over his sin. He should exercise this spirit of contri on every me something goes wrong in his life, every me he does the examina on of conscience, every

me he confesses his sins. This is the radical cure for lukewarm-ness Borgia Parish Library is located on the street level entrance of Jesuit Hall. We have so many wonderful books & DVD’s to as-sist you on your Faith journey. Check it out!

Two is the minimum number of people assigned in case one person is unable to a end due to sickness or other emergency. Addi onal adorers are needed from 10:00 am through 7:00 - 8:00 pm. There are also mes when only one person is present during the hours of 1:00 am and 2:00 am. If you are able to a end for one hour on a regular basis or as a subs tute please let me know. A deluge of volunteers would be greatly appreciated. Our God is never outdone in generosi-ty. Everyone a ending a specific hour is asked to write your name on the Adora on Sign-in Sheet at the East Entrance of church. God Bless you for your generosity. Deacon Leon
