I am grateful for the caring and treatment of the doctors and nurses in the hospital. I would like to express here my hearelt gratude to you all: those who brought me to the hospital on Sunday evening, September 9th (I can not put down your names properly); Father Stephen, Father Enoch, the ladies in the office; your concern and prayer; and so on. Without you, I may be in somewhere else. A call we can sense in the Readings this Sunday is the call to tolerance. The First Reading points to us the tolerant act of Moses when people asked him to stop the two men prophesying in the camp with his spirit: Are you jealous on my account? If only the whole people of the Lord were prophets, and the Lord gave his Spirit to them all.” In the Second Reading, Saint James said quite harsh words on the rich. He made several points, as expressed in Break Open The Word: (1) Wealth and luxuries are transitory; they do not last; (2) Acquiring wealth oſten involves injusce and the exploitaon of the weak; (3) Wealth is so oſten used selfishly. And in the Gospel, the point of Jesus is clear when the disciples were not happy with a man casng out the devils in his name: “Anyone who is not against us is for us.” Furthermore, Jesus emphasised the rewards to those who do good things, even the least one such as offering a cup of water, in the name of Christ. Jesus also stressed on the decisive choice we have to make in coming into the Kingdom of God. The text is in figurave language, I guess, because if we follow these instrucons literally, we may not have enough hands, feet and eyes to cut off for our sins. “Today’s Gospel,” said a refleconist, “also demonstrates another reason for the need of interpretaon in Scripture. Jesus speaks of cung off one’s hands and feet. In doing so he is using Semic exaggeraon or what today we call hyperbole. Jesus is simply exaggerang to emphasize his point. He in no way intends to be taken literally. It’s akin to someone today saying he’d give his right arm to see the World Series. To expect his arm in payment would be an absurd and grotesque misreading.” We pray that we be good disciples of Christ in following his footsteps on being tolerant to our brothers and sisters whom we live with, work with and journey with in life. 26th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 30th SEPTEMBER 2018

A very warm welcome to anyone visiting our Parish. It is good to have you with us.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the Ipswich Catholic Community please visit our

parish website at www.ipswichcatholic.com We hope you enjoy your time in Ipswich. Please come again soon.

Dear Parishioners,

I have been home after nearly five days in hospital.

This is the first time in my life being in the hospital.

Apart from other things, I could experience how

dependent we human beings are, especially in the

hard situations. Others, our friends and neighbours,

are certainly a good help when we are most in need. I

am grateful for the caring and treatment of the

doctors and nurses in the hospital. I would like to

express here my heartfelt gratitude to you all: those

who brought me to the hospital on Sunday evening,

September 9th (I can not put down your names

properly); Father Stephen, Father Enoch, the ladies in

the office; your concern and prayer; and so on.

Without you, I may be in somewhere else.

A call we can sense in the Readings this Sunday is the

call to tolerance. The First Reading points to us the

tolerant act of Moses when people asked him to stop

the two men prophesying in the camp with his spirit:

“Are you jealous on my account? If only the whole

people of the Lord were prophets, and the Lord gave

his Spirit to them all.” In the Second Reading, Saint

James said quite harsh words on the rich. He made

several points, as expressed in Break Open The Word:

(1) Wealth and luxuries are transitory; they do not

last; (2) Acquiring wealth often involves injustice and

the exploitation of the weak; (3) Wealth is so often

used selfishly.

And in the Gospel, the point of Jesus is clear when the

disciples were not happy with a man casting out the

devils in his name: “Anyone who is not against us is for

us.”

Furthermore, Jesus emphasised the rewards to those

who do good things, even the least one such as

offering a cup of water, in the name of Christ. Jesus

also stressed on the decisive choice we have to make

in coming into the Kingdom of God. The text is in

figurative language, I guess, because if we follow these

instructions literally, we may not have enough hands,

feet and eyes to cut off for our sins. “Today’s Gospel,”

said a reflectionist, “also demonstrates another reason

for the need of interpretation in Scripture. Jesus

speaks of cutting off one’s hands and feet. In doing so

he is using Semitic exaggeration or what today we call

hyperbole. Jesus is simply exaggerating to emphasize

his point. He in no way intends to be taken literally.

It’s akin to someone today saying he’d give his right

arm to see the World Series. To expect his arm in

payment would be an absurd and grotesque

misreading.”

We pray that we be good disciples of Christ in

following his footsteps on being tolerant to our

brothers and sisters whom we live with, work with and

journey with in life.

May God bless us all! John Hong

… What’s happening in the Ipswich Catholic Community ...

INSIGHTS ON PARISH RENEWAL AND THE PROCLAIM CONFERENCE, (part 5 continues): Building on the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis calls us to the renewal of our parishes and communities. What is said below of parishes is meant to apply as well to all Eucharistic communities in our archdiocese, including Aboriginal and multicultural communities. It also applies to parish schools and to other Catholic schools in ways that are appropriate to their different contexts. The parish community is visibly engaged with those who experience poverty and need, and with those at the margins of society and church: Pope Francis has said: “Here I repeat for the entire Church what I have often said to the priests and laity of Buenos Aires: I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a Church concerned with being at the centre and which then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures” (The Joy of the Gospel, par. 49). We need to be a Church that constantly witness to mercy. We need to take the risk of acting for justice. Our parishes will need to go out to both their own members in need, including those who are old, isolated, sick and those who are in need in their neighbourhoods and in the wider world.

Pope Francis tells us that he wants “a church which is poor and for the poor” (The Joy of the Gospel, par. 198).

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY: The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement for 2018–19 is titled ‘A Place to Call

Home: Making a home for everyone in our land’. The latest Census figures show that more than 116,000 Australians are homeless – something unacceptable for a rich and well-resourced nation like ours. Yet these people are only the tip of the iceberg: welfare agencies report growing numbers of families and individuals struggling to meet the cost of mortgages or rents and turning to specialist housing services, which are often unable to meet demand. House prices and even rents are spiralling out of reach of too many families and placing huge financial stress on ordinary people, even when they are employed. For those living on pensions or allowances, finding secure housing can be a far greater challenge – one that often takes a terrible toll on social wellbeing and mental

health. The Statement challenges us all to confront Australia’s growing rate of homelessness and unaffordable housing. You can download a copy of the Statement: www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au/

FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT OF EVERY MONTH: Commencing at 7.00pm at St

Brigid’s Parish Hall, Railway Street, Rosewood. Good prizes,

raffles, luck door, supper. Entry is $2.00. For more

information, please call Bernadette on 54641571.

CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION PROGRAM (CRI): We are all called to be of service to one another and within the CRI program. There is the opportunity to serve in many ways - as an instructor in the classroom, a support person for the instructor or as a behind the scenes volunteer, preparing much needed classroom materials and most importantly, to be a prayer partner. This

is essential for the ongoing success of the program. When the next call comes, to help us to confidently answer the call we need to prepare ourselves to obtain some knowledge of the CRI program. Information booths will be set up on the 13th October at Immaculate Heart Church Leichhardt, after the 4:30pm Mass and 14th October at St Mary’s Church Ipswich after the 8:30am Mass.

The display will include some of the materials, manuals, workbooks and support pamphlets used to assist the children attending our State Schools, to come to know God’s boundless love for each and every person. Many volunteers are required to deliver this great message. Please visit the information booths and have a chat to the CRI members, who will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Aileen Kelly, Ipswich Catholic Community CRI Coordinator: Phone 0438113857.
