PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends:

It is hard to believe that we’ve come to the end of October. Enjoy Halloween, the Eve of All Saints! Moving into November, we as a Church try to be even more mindful of our loved ones who have gone before us. The celebrations of All Saints (Nov.1) and All Souls (Nov.2) help us begin this month of remembrance. Masses will be offered both days at 7:30 AM, 12:10 PM, 5:30 PM, 7:00 PM Spanish. Please be certain to fulfill your obligation to participate in Mass on the 1st, as it is a Holy Day of obligation. Also, if you have not yet filled out a memorial card with the names of your beloved dead, please do so. They will be alphabetized according to family name and placed in the Book of Life, which will remain in the sanctuary from All Souls Day until Thanksgiving, and remembered at all Masses. In that same spirit, there has also been a desire to make more opportunities available to remember, to memorialize loved ones, the living and the dead, especially around anniversaries and days that were special to them in this life. After looking at the practices of other parishes and discussing with the Parish Councils, we believe that the Mass, as the central act of our faith, is the primary place that we as a community come together to remember our loved ones and offer prayers on their behalf. It has always been the custom of the Church to offer each Mass for an individual intention, and each year our Mass Book becomes filled with the names of those we love. The other offerings that surround the Mass are the flowers, as well as the bread and wine and the sanctuary candle that remains lit at all times to signal the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. These items are literally offered and consumed each week, and point to the sacrificial nature of Christ’s love for us. This week a parishioner came forward and asked for the Bread and Wine to be offered in honor of Msgr. O’Connor and for the Sanctuary Candle to burn in memory of Donna DeSolis. Msgr. O’Connor and Donna are still so much a part of this community for the decades they served among us. It is fitting that we begin this month of remembrance especially honoring them, offering prayers for them, and asking their intercession as we continue their legacy here. Should you wish to offer the weekly Bread and Wine, Sanctuary Lamp, or Sunday flowers in memory of a loved one please call or stop by the Rectory. The suggested donation for flowers is $200, bread and wine $100, sanctuary lamp $100. Thursday, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Charles Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan in the 1500s. St. Charles worked tirelessly to promote a renewed sense of faith, simplicity, and charity as core values in response to the Protestant Reformation sweeping Europe at the time. He also helped reestablish the Seminary system to train new priests, a system still very much adhered to today, but one that in every age deserves a healthy critique. I would also like to call our attention to Pope John XXIII, who began his term as Pope on October 28, 1954. John, the Good Pope, is someone dear to me and my generation of Catholics who remember him for his pastoral charity and his willingness to let the Faith come into contact with other faiths and the world at large. This ability to remain grounded yet open no doubt came out of his experience as a church diplomat in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, and France from the 1930s to the 1940s.

This coming Friday is First Friday with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 12:30-5:30. Please drop by for a few moments of prayer. Next Sunday is the New York City Marathon. If you are participating and would like a special blessing, please attend the Saturday evening Mass next week- we would love to see you off! Our Capital Campaign is off to a good start, but we need all the help we can get…thank you so much for your continued generosity towards the capital repairs of our beautiful church. Please pray for peace, and that our coming election be peaceful. Fr. Duffell

Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30th, 2016

Te esperamos no faltes.

is the process designed by the Church for adults to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. The goals are to give a complete overview of Catholic teaching and practice and to begin to deepen a Christian spiritual life centered in the Sunday Scripture readings. Inquiry discussions at Blessed Sacrament began on Monday, October 3 at 6:30 pm in the rectory. If anyone is seeking more information or wishes to register, please call Tina Silvestro at 212-877-3111.
