Students need to come to school following the NLABC dress code. This is also a good time to remind your child not to share candy with their classmates due to food and nut allergies. Please review this with your child. Our teachers will do the same, but we know kids can share before school and after school as well. Thank you for your help with this. Next Tuesday will be a fun day here at NLABC! Junior Achievement of Alaska will be doing their traditional “JA in a Day” program in our classrooms. Thank you to the many volunteers who are willing to teach and help the students learn about our world, economy, and how to be an entrepreneur! This is a fun day for the kids as they get to learn many new concepts that will make them successful in the future. That evening we have a fundraiser for our school. Texas Roadhouse on Old Seward will be hosting a fundraiser where you can dine in, or order take out and pick it up. When you show the flyer or photo on our Facebook page, we get 10% back. Please don’t forget to mention you are with NLABC! Please be on the lookout for information coming out by the end of October regarding our traditional Thanksgiving Feast. Things will be different this year, but I am still planning on having the feast on a much smaller scale. It is important that we honor our school’s history and heritage. Just a reminder there is no school on Friday, October 22nd. Have a great weekend, Tammy Duff Principal

Northern Lights ABC School Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Next week is our Parent Teacher Conference week. We will have 1/2 days on Wednesday and Thursday with dismissal at 11:45 am. This is a time for you and your child’s teacher to communicate about your child’s strengths and areas that need improvement. If you have not signed up for either an in-person conference or a Zoom conference, it’s not too late! Please contact your child’s teacher to schedule a time.

We have over 100 new students, not including our kindergarteners, to our school. I’d like to share a few reminders. We do not dress up in costumes for Halloween or have Halloween parties at school.

Back in January 2020 (before Covid hit), our school led a fundraising effort to purchase coffin-sized American flags. We came across a local news article where our local police and fire chaplains expressed the need of funds for them to purchase flags for our communities’ veterans and first responders. “After a death, the chaplains drape the body of a veteran or first responder with a flag to honor them as they leave a home or hospital.”

By doing this, we were able to demonstrate our spirit of giving which strongly supports NLABC’s character blocks of Patriotism, Generosity, Compassion, Courage, Respect, and Helpfulness.

We want to say thank you to the families and individuals who helped sponsor a flag. A special thanks goes to Seth Young, a middle school student, who went out and solicited 16 donations for the flags. Way to go Seth! Our wonderful PTA also ordered the flags and made labels on each flag to say who the flag was donated by. Again, thank you for helping us fulfill a community project of demonstrating good citizenship.

K-5 Our students are doing a great job in their K-5 music classes. We are singing songs, playing instruments together, moving with the music and working on our music literacy skills. If you’d like, ask your Kindergartener about the song “Listen, Listen”, your 1st grader about “Autumn Leaves”, your 2nd grader about “Engine Engine,” your 4th grader about “Papaya” and your 5th grader about the song “Mango Walk.” And please welcome Christian Johnson as our new Wednesday music teacher for 3rd grade! Fifth grade students are eligible to audition for the city-wide Honor Choir with auditions at the beginning of November. Check with your 5th grade student for permission slips.

6th-8th Choir 6th grade choir is doing a great job on their solfege and literacy skills. Sixth grade students are eligible to audition for the city-wide Honor Choir with auditions at the beginning of November. Check with your 6th grade choir student for permission slips.

7th and 8th grade choir are making progress as well with vocal and literacy skills. What a great group! Talk to your student about Solo and Ensemble and if your student would like to participate, please return the permission slips for our before-school rehearsals starting in November. If you have questions, I’ll be at Middle School conferences and am happy to answer them.

If you have questions, you can reach me at [email protected]

AO NO. 2019 51(S), AS AMENDED MUNI.ORG/ASSEMBLY

NO CELLPHONES INSCHOOL ZONESFACTSHEET*A new ordinance (law) passed by the Anchorage Assembly on June 20, 2019 makes it unlawful for a driver of any vehicle to talk on a mobile communication device while driving a vehicle within an active school zone or on school grounds, unless the vehicle is stopped or a hands-free device is used.

1 PURPOSE OF THE LAW

Student safety is extremely important. Distracted driving is dangerous. Talking on a cell phone or mobile communication device is distracted driving and jeopardizes student safety in designated school zones.

2 TERMS USED IN THE NEW LAW

A mobile communication device is a cellular phone, smart phone, personal data assistant, wireless tablet, computer, or any similar device used for voice or visual communication. An active school zone is a school zone with signage between 6:00 a.m.

and 9:00 p.m. and where the maximum speed is 25 miles per hour or less on the streets permanently or due to a temporary speed reduction

indicated by flashing school zone lights. A hands-free device is a phone with speaker capability, an attachment, or other piece of equipment that allows the use of the device without either of the operator’s hands.

THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS IN THE LAW 3

A vehicle is stopped OR a mobile communication device is used with a hands-free device. A mobile communication device is used to dial 911 and make an emergency call. An operator of an authorized emergency vehicle is using a mobile communication device while acting in an official capacity.

AO NO. 2019 51(S), AS AMENDED MUNI.ORG/ASSEMBLY

NO CELL PHONESIN SCHOOL ZONESFACTSHEET(CONT.)

CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATIONS

A $500 fine, or A class A misdemeanor if a person's driving causes physical injury or death to another person.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Why isn’t talking on cell phones banned while driving everywhere in Alaska? The State of Alaska has preempted Anchorage’s right to ban talking on a cell phone while driving, but reading or typing a text message while driving is prohibited statewide. Can I call my student when I’m there to pick them up? Yes, if your car is stopped, then you can call your student on your cell phone. Or, you may call your student on a hands-free device.

Do these rules apply only when the school zone lights are flashing? No! Most schools don’t have flashing lights. These rules apply in an active school zone, where the speed limit is 25 mph or less, even if temporarily indicated by the flashing lights, and is designated by the signs posted that say “School Zone”. If the speed limit is never reduced to 25 mph or less, the street is not in an active school zone and the rules don’t apply even if there are signs. How can I be sure if I am in a place where I can legally use my cell phone? If you are unsure, don’t use your cell phone! Pull over, stop, and use your cell phone when you are not driving.
