Each year near Thanksgiving, SJCS partners with City Team to help fill their food pantry so that no one in need is ever turned away. One in four families in the bay area are in need of help. Today your student will be bringing home a grocery bag along with a suggested list of items that are needed to fill the City Team pantry. Donations will be accepted until Thursday, 11/19 when the food drive culminates in an all-school chapel with guest speakers from City Team. Please be as generous as possible! Tiger Stripes Reflections on Who We Are SJCS “Love Does” Service Plan For 2014-2015 Love. Learn. Serve. It’s who we are. At SJCS service happens every day. “Love Does” is a reality. So I am somewhat reluctant to call this a “service plan.” What follows concerns only one important aspect of service at SJCS; what SJCS does as a community to impact the wider San Jose community. Here’s our community impact plan for this year: Fall 2014: As a whole school, SJCS is involved in helping City Team, whose mission is “to passionately transform lives of individuals, families and communities.” (Note the similarities to SJCS’s own statement of mission!) City Team works with those suering from homelessness, poverty and addiction; SJCS will be helping supply City Team’s goal to feed those in need this year. Winter 2014-15: Each individual class at SJCS has set a community service goal for Christmas and winter 2015. This is the time for all classrooms and homerooms to shine! Watch for information coming from your children and their teachers about such opportunities as Christmas Child, nursing home visits, and the like. Spring 2015: SJCS has formed a team of parents to research and present a “hands on” local mission experience appropriate for elementary and middle school students. Such an opportunity will involve some kind of personal interaction with a mission agency as it serves its clients. Spring 2015 will be a time for our students to get a vision for how an agency makes “Love Does” come alive in a practical “on the ground” way. Love. Learn. Serve. Stay tuned. Exciting things are happening.

Teacher Tales Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

This past month the Middle School Student Council hosted the first ever SJCS Speedball Tournament. Speedball is a game that combines team handball, soccer, and basketball. It is a quick, fast paced game that teaches the physical education principles of invasion and territorial space, along with skills of the above-mentioned sports. The game was introduced to the middle school students by Mr. Bost in P.E. class. !There were a total of four teams that participated in a double elimination tournament, and games took place at lunch on the middle school basketball courts. The competition was intense. The athletic gifts of our students were on display as all the games were played at a high level. In the end, the Munchkins arose victorious. !Throughout the tournament this year’s theme of “Love Does” could be easily seen. Participants played fairly and continuously encouraged one another. Players would fall and within seconds another player was there to lend a helping hand along with a kind word. The athletic abilities of the players were impressive to watch, but perhaps the most impressive thing was their attitudes, whether they won or lost. Congratulations to all those who participated! !

Cross Country The lady Tigers took first place at the division finals last Friday! There were over 60 girls competing. Elizabeth K. came in first place, completing her 1.25 mile run in 8:15. Naomi R. came in 4th, with 8:34, Katherine K. ran the race in 8:50 and Natalie R. finished with 10:44. Amazing job ladies! The boys also did exceptionally well and earned 3rd place overall. Dylan H. came in 3rd out of over 80 runners, completing his run in 7:29, Josh N. completed the race in 7:51, Ben W. 8:24, Calvin F. 8:49, and Nate W. 9:52. The Mission of SJCS !!The mission of SJCS is to advance the kingdom of God by providing

exceptional teaching and curriculum fully integrated with Biblical

perspective. Within our committed Christian community, we live to

engage and transform culture for Jesus Christ.

SJCS Student in Hollywood Aspiring filmmaker, 5th grader Ayla F. wrote, directed, shot and edited her film CheckMate that won Best Director and Best Cast at the first SJCS Film Festival this past May. Ayla cast friends from SJCS, Mary B., Colby Z., Ella S., Mia S., Micheal P., David P., Christina R. and Brady Z. CheckMate is about a girl who tries to join the school chess club but is denied by the chess club president because she is a girl. Her friend encourages her to enter the school chess tournament, which she does and faces the club president in the championship round.

CheckMate was an official selection at the 19th annual International Family Film Festival (IFFF) this past weekend at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, CA. Ayla received the Best Drama award for the Youth Fest division and SJCS was acknowledged.

Congratulations Ayla and the SJCS cast.

Tiger Cubs Tips & Information about Preschool! !In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the Preschool will celebrate with two special events. On Monday, November 24th, we will have a corn feast. Preschool students will learn about corn and then enjoy an array of foods that are made from corn. Then, on Tuesday, November 25th, we will have a Handful Feast. Each student will bring a "handful" of an item to share with their class. The monthly themes of giving and being thankful will shine on these two special days. !Stay tuned for more details in the coming week!
