San Jose Christian School | November 23, 2015 Jenn’s Pen by: Mrs. Jennifer Thompson An Attitude of Gratitude and Compassion A spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving is not optional for Christians when we consider God’s blessings in our lives. The story in Luke 17 reminds us very clearly how important it is to give thanks for our blessings and for Jesus’s attitude of compassion. Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” In these verses, Luke shows us Jesus’s compassion for a group of outcasts who probably knew very little theology. What they did know, however, was that Jesus was the Savior, and they had complete confidence in His ability to heal. What happened? Jesus did exactly what they expected. All were healed, but just 10%, only ONE, came back and said thank you. The rest took for granted the blessing they received. Have we done the same? Are we accustomed to the many blessings we receive and forget to be grateful? I know that I do that. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week with friends and family, let us be in that 10 percent. Rejoice! Praise God! Be grateful! Forgiveness of sin and eternal salvation are God’s gifts to those who know Him personally. We have been blessed. Having a right attitude about what we have already received can produce unimaginable benefits in the future. Let’s come back to Jesus’ feet this Thanksgiving and give thanks. Then put let’s put our faith into action by continuing to develop an attitude of compassion. It will be worth the time it takes. An Attitude of Gratitude and Compassion

A spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving is not optional for Christians when we consider God’s blessings in our lives.

Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”  Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

In these verses, Luke shows us Jesus’s compassion for a group of outcasts who probably knew very little theology.

Parent Education Night:Education Savings SeminarThe SJCS CPTA Parent Education Night last Thursday, was excellent. With only a handful of parents in attendance the evening was bursting with valuable content, real time questions and answers that gave great insight to planning for the cost of continuing Christian Education and then college. Thank you to Jeremy Geels for providing such an awesome seminar.

Are You Running Late? Please remember to follow the school zone speed limit at all times. If you are late for early choir or band practice, please do not rush. If you have to be somewhere after a later pick-up, take your time exiting the parking lot. We have students on campus from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm. Safety is rule #1. Thank you.

Annual Book FairThe Scholastic Book Fair is winding down but you can still participate and order books on line. Check out the online store by clicking here! The on-line store will be available through tomorrow November 24.

SJCS Christmas ConcertJoin the 5-8 Concert Bands, 7-8 Jazz Band, and SJCS Choir for an evening of Christmas worship and celebration of our gifts. The concert will begin at 7 PM at Central Christian Church (2555 Meridian Ave, San Jose). Students will present songs, and we will conclude the evening with a time of carol singing led by the students. 5-8 students will warm up at 6:30 (choir) and 6:45 (band). Student dress code expectations are white dress shirts (collars for boys) and black pants (or skirts with leggings for girls). Red accents are acceptable. No hats, please.

BoxTops! Great job by each class submitting BoxTops for the 1st quarter. In total we submitted 4129 BoxTops. Our 4th grade class submitted 1865 BoxTop ($186.50) We will celebrate these efforts with a special treat for the class next week. Keep clipping and bringing in those BoxTops. This is an easy and great way to earn money for SJCS.

Exciting Event - Touch a Truck!Saturday, January 23rd will be our first Touch a Truck event! Students and families are invited to campus to climb in their favorite trucks and learn from their drivers about how they work. We're hoping to have at least 20 trucks, such as a fire engine, SWAT vehicle, food trucks, construction trucks, garbage truck, etc. This is where you come in...

Calling all trucks! If you drive a truck or have access to a "cool" vehicle (airplane? space shuttle?), please contact Mr. I at [email protected]. We would love to have you join us. We are also looking for volunteers to help organize the event. Please plan on attending and share in this exciting day!

Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

Spotlight on Service by Chad Seps

Students here at SJCS are doing a small thing to help the kids and families hit by the huge fires in September in Middletown and Cobb, California.

The families in the disaster zone lost much from the fires. Colleen Williams lives in a nearby community and knows many in the Middletown area. She said, "The families there lost quite a bit. It was not only their homes, but all of their belongings, too. It's sinking in even more now with the holidays coming because all of their decorations were lost, including Christmas tree ornaments, some of which were handmade."

Next week, SJCS 2nd and 3rd graders will make handmade tree ornaments and mail them to elementary schools in Middletown. There are many easy patterns for homemade ornaments on Pinterest. By doing our part, we can help bring a little joy and love to those who lost so much this year.

If you'd like to join in, feel free to make ornaments at home. Three schools serve the region hit by the fire: Minnie Cannon Elementary, Coyote Valley Elementary, and Cobb Elementary. To participate, either bring your ornaments in to school or mail them to:

Mister Rogers by Suzie VanEwyk

Mister Rogers is one of my favorite Early Childhood Educators. This week I would like to share some words of wisdom from one of his books, The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember.

The Courage to Be Yourself: “Who you are inside is what helps you make and do everything in life.”
