Page 3: 2018 VOLUME 40 ISSUE 290 SIVAN/TAMMUZ...Torah project. I hope that each of you will join me in fulfilling the 613th commandment, to write a Torah scroll, by purchasing a letter, word,

I often describe the Jericho Jewish Center as “a

community of communities.” People come to the Jericho

Jewish Center for different reasons. Some came and

remain because of the Conservadox nature of our

traditional services. Some came to say Kaddish for a loved

one at our daily minyan and found the congregation so

supportive and nurturing that they stayed. Many are here

because of the attraction of our one day a week Hebrew

School program. Others are here because a friend of a

neighbor told them about our wonderful synagogue.

Others have joined for social action, to make a difference

in the greater community. Whatever the reason, let us be

honest with ourselves that people are drawn to the Jericho

Jewish Center for different reasons. We are not going to

make progressive minded people into traditionalists, nor

will we liberalize someone with a traditional mind, no

matter what the Conservative Movement allows.

I have most certainly learned that we cannot be all

things to all people. As a rabbi who leans conservative on

liturgical issues and progressively on social issues, I have

found myself straddling both sides of the fence. I would

like nothing better than to be able to have one service for

everyone but as that has not been possible unless that

service is fully traditional, so I have created alternative

services such as Friday Night Live, Shabbat on the Beach

and Pray at the Park. In being honest with ourselves, we

must acknowledge that different strokes work for different

folks.

The key lesson I have learned is that compromise

is not always the best solution. In compromise, people feel

that they are missing out, sacrificing a key principle or

going down a slippery slope, which triggers resistance.

Instead the goal should be to generate something which is

authentic for you. If what floats your boat is a service

which is fully traditional, wonderful. If it’s a more

contemplative or meditative approach, that’s great as well.

For me it’s those moments of introspection that generate a

connection to G-d but for others it’s the comfort in saying

the same prayer service that has been said for generations.

What I hope will happen is that we are honest

with ourselves as to what we are looking for at the Jericho

Jewish Center and to what extent we are able to make it

happen. In my mind, the status quo generates stagnation

whereas new approaches bring vitality.

I am excited about Mitzvah 613: The new Sefer

Torah project. I hope that each of you will join me in

fulfilling the 613th commandment, to write a Torah scroll,

by purchasing a letter, word, parsha or special section of

the Torah and having the opportunity to fill in a letter with

the Sofer, or scribe. It is such a wonderful opportunity to

be part of bringing something of great value to the Jericho

Jewish Center, which will be read from by the next

generation at their B’nai Mitzvah and will be a treasure in

our ark. I’m looking forward to a year of festivities and

excitement around our new Torah as something to unite

our “community of communities.”

Are We Honest With Ourselves?

Mitzvah 613: Writing a Sefer Torah

“And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of Israel.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). While this is referring to the song of Haazinu near the end of the Torah, The Talmud (Nedarim 38a) has taken this to refer to the commandment for every Jew to write his/her own Sefer Torah (Torah scroll).

It is a special skill to write a Torah, and it takes on average a year to do so. As many of us have other vocations, how then can we fulfill this command? According to Rabbi Moses Isserles (the Rema), we fulfill it by writing at least one letter in the Torah (Yoreh Deah 270:1 based off Menachot 30a).

During the 2018-19 synagogue year, each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this Mitzvah, thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen. Neil’s parents, Norman and Harriet z”l were members of the Jericho Jewish Center for almost 60 years. When Norman z”l passed away last year, Neil and Sherry sought to honor him through a gift to his spiritual home, the Jericho Jewish Center. Their generosity enables us to acquire a new Torah at JJC, a welcome addition, as most of our Torot are heavy and a number of them are pasul (unfit for ritual use). Each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this commandment by donating for a letter, a word or a more substantial gift to be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a simcha. All donors will receive a certificate of appreciation for their donation, will get to write a letter in the Torah and will have a photo taken with the scribe as this is done.

Please send your gift in to the Jericho Jewish Center and indicate that it is for the Mitzvah 613 Torah campaign. Also please inform your family and friends, inviting them to contribute to our new Torah. Let us know if you are interested in participating in our Mitzvah 613 committee: we are looking for creative minds to plan educational programs around the Torah. Lastly, please indicate if it is in honor of a simcha or in memory of a loved one so that we can acknowledge it appropriately.

From the Cantor Kenneth Cohen

Now we have completed the kaleidoscopic roller coaster ride of the Winter- Spring Holidays cycle--

irrational hilarity of Purim, to the serious retelling of our Pesach liberation, and then the trek through

the seven weeks and seven intersecting qualities of the soul, all the way to the Mountain of thunder

and smoke, Ruth and Revelation and dairy refreshment at Shavuot. One common denominator of

those occasions: we come together to share study and prayer, story and song, as well as a chance

to check in with each other and update our own personal journeys. It has been a wonderful honor

and pleasure to begin to know the people of this congregation during these first few months as

Cantor at Jericho. During the summer months I will be available to all who would like to prepare

texts for chanting or recitation. I hope to offer workshops on the use of congregants' own favorite

melodies, and to introduce new melodies in informal settings so that we can come together on

Shabbat and Holidays with stronger, more confident participation, with stunning unison, and

beautiful harmonies. Please let me know if you have any preferences, ideas or questions for

helping us grow as a singing congregation. I will do my best to incorporate everyone's point of view

into the mix. I want to wish everyone a safe and successful season of transitions and sunshine. I

hope to be hearing and seeing you again soon!

Toda Rabah!

Over the last year, I have learned much about

our congregation. Among other things, I have

noted that the interests of the membership of the

Jericho Jewish Center are extremely diverse and

that there obviously is no single event or service

or program that will appeal to each and every

one. That diversity is a wonderful asset upon

which we are attempting to capitalize and to

nurture.

There are those who seek our synagogue as a

catalyst for social action, to make the world

better. Others participate in synagogue events

because of the importance of observance to

them. Some come to learn, whether it be

beginner’s Hebrew, the weekly parshah or to

discuss the writings of Philip Roth z”l or Rabbi

Adin Steinsaltz. Some come to kibbitz and

socialize.

There are important programs at the Jericho

Jewish Center which are designed to encompass

the needs and passions of our members.

On Sunday, June 10, the Jericho Jewish Center

will be having a Tag Sale. Over the last several

weeks, Leslie Hartman and her team have been

schlepping, collecting, securing, organizing,

cataloging, advertising, and pricing items to be

sold. This event is designed to be a fun and fund

raising event for our synagogue, but just as

importantly to provide an opportunity for those on

limited budget to secure clothing, books, shoes,

games and housewares at reasonable prices.

This event serves as an important social action

activity. Please reach out to Leslie to volunteer

your time to help the Tag Sale be even more of a

success.

The Jericho Jewish Center is fortunate to be the

beneficiary of a torah being donated by Neil and

Sherry Cohen in memory of Norman and Harriet

Cohen. Over this coming year and culminating

with a siyyum next spring, our hope and intention

is to involve the entire synagogue community in

writing the torah, an important mitzvah.

Programs are being created to allow children to

actually write portions of the torah on parchment

and learn about the process that the sofer

(scribe) will be using. Adults will be given the

opportunity to both teach and be educated in the

laws of the torah. We want to satisfy the

interests and needs of our congregation on this

project. What skills and ideas do you possess

that would be helpful in engaging our members

and community in this endeavor? Can you help

teach congregants about the laws of the torah?

Can you teach someone to read the torah? Is

there is particular chapter or portion that is

important to you and your family that you would

be willing to sponsor and dedicate?

Late in August several athletes among us are

participating in the Triathlon Relay at Teddy

Roosevelt Memorial Park. Do you want to join

the team as a participant, spectator or a training

partner? Please let me know how you want to

get involved.

Lastly, I encourage you to tell me the programs

and activities that would draw you closer to the

Jericho Jewish Center. The summer will be a

busy time for planning and we want your input in

providing events that will pique your interest.

With appreciation,

Richard Cepler

Shalom! It is hard to believe that the Religious School year has

finished. During the month of May we had an eclectic type of learning

here at the Jewish Youth Learning Center.

Our Shabbat Alive services, which take place in the Beit Midrash on

the first Shabbat of each month, are growing and well attended. It is a

joy to listen to the students leading the service and watch the parents

kvell over their children. Parents often participate in the service with

an Aliyah or carrying the Torah and are learning about Shabbat

morning services alongside their children.

The Alef class showed off their year-long learning during the

Kabbalat Siddur dedication service with their families and the

congregation. Kol HaKavod to Morah Chari and Morah Sona for being

such wonderful teachers! The students performed masterfully and

were excited to receive their siddurs. They should bring their siddur

with them each week to Religious School throughout the upcoming

years.

Kol HaKavod to our METNY USCJ award recipients, Maya Akiva,

Ashley Libertoff and Jake Solomon. They received their awards at

a Long Island community event, held this year at Merrick Jewish

Center.

At our closing session, we had a BRACHATHON, (Bracha

marathon). Each grade taught the rest of the school the brachot for a

specific category. One grade taught the Shabbat blessings; one grade

taught Havdallah; another grade made a Jewpardy game about the

brachot we say on holidays. The older grades taught the younger

grades the brachot for phenomena such as rainbows, ocean, lightning,

thunder, and going on a trip. The overall favorite brachot was about

foods for grain/bread, for trees, for candy, for fruit, etc.

Students were sad to see the year end, but they look forward to a fun

summer and to returning to the Jericho Jewish Youth Learning Center

in the Fall.

Registration and Enrollment for religious school is ongoing. The Early

Bird discount expires June 8th. Forms and deposits can be made on

the website or in person.

Upcoming Events:

June 8 - 7:45 pm Hei Graduation / Friday Night Live Services/Dessert reception

Sept 4 - 4:15 pm Religious School begins, 6:30pm Welcome Back BBQ for students and their families

Wishing you and your family a wonderful summer.

I can’t believe how fast the school year has flown by. I am amazed at how the time has passed me

by this school year. This is my end of the year salute to all that is IKEN-Jericho JC.

This year, as in any preschool year, has had its challenges and rewards. I have learned a great

deal and know that there is much more learning to come. Our school has grown to 59 children and

enrollment for next year is growing rapidly. Our Learning Adventures Enrichment Programs offer

invaluable instruction that build upon the children’s cognitive and gross motor skills. The children

learned how to write with ease with the addition of our Handwriting without Tears Program which we

added to our curriculum this year. Our success would not have been possible without my “DREAM

TEAM.” The teachers of IKEN-Jericho JC are honestly the hardest working, most devoted and

professionally minded group of teachers. I am proud to work with each and every one of them. I

want to give a special thank you to Mindy who has always been by my side. She has been the

best assistant director and I couldn’t have been as successful this year without her.

Gloria and i are being this years JJC honorees for the ISRAEL BONDS Breakfast on sunday morning august 19th. it will be phenomenal. and remember-Israel Bonds are an INVESTMENT in the State of Israel. buying Israel Bonds is NOT a donation. the bonds offer great rates and are very very secure. no matter what your politics may be, Israel deserves OUR SUPPORT. Israel must remain viable for the sake

of worldwide Jewry!!!

on august 26th i, jake! will be participating in the GLIRC triathlon in oyster bay. the Rabbi prevailed upon me to do one of the bike legs on one of the teams fighting for world domination of triathlon. see the Rabbi about supporting our dear old JJC by supporting our triathlon teams. did i happen to mention the word SUPPORT?

i guess that about wraps it up. somehow, i came up with something to write. YEAH THATS RIGHT! and on that note, i’ll see you in september!!!

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL GARDEN UPDATE

WE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THE WEATHER PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS ALL OF

YOU GARDENERS READING THIS ARTICLE HAVE BEEN DOING, BUT WE HOPE TO HAVE

OUR PLANTINGS IN BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS. IF NOT, THEY WILL BE PLANTED AND

GROWING PRETTY SOON. WE CAN’T WAIT TO GET STARTED AND GET OUR GREEN

THUMBS DIRTY. THE ANNUALS WILL BE PLANTED, AND THE PERENNIALS WILL BE

SHOWING THEIR BEAUTY AS THEIR TIME TO BLOOM COMES DUE. IT IS WITH YOUR

CONTRIBUTIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT MAKES IT ALL HAPPEN.

AS MOST OF YOU KNOW BY NOW ALL CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO BENEFIT THE

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL GARDEN (“HMG”) GO DIRECTLY TO THE GARDEN AND ITS

UPKEEP, INCLUDING THE PURCHASE OF FLOWERS, WEEKLY MAINTENANCE, PRUNING,

POWER WASHING, TREE TRIMMING, FEEDING ETC. I THINK ALL GARDENERS KNOW

WHAT KEEPING A GARDEN ENTAILS. I AM VERY PROUD TO MENTION AGAIN AS I HAVE

DONE MANY TIMES BEFORE, THAT NOT ONE PENNY HAS EVER COME FROM THE JJC’S

GENERAL FUND TO SUPPORT THE “HMG” SINCE IT’S DEDICATION ON MAY 6TH

,2001. WE

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

THE “WALK OF REMEMBRANCE” IN THE GARDEN, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS AND

HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL FUND RAISER FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE JERICHO JEWISH

CENTER. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF BRICKS AT $118- EACH GO DIRECTLY INTO

THE OUR GENERAL FUND AND ARE NEEDED TO HELP THE JJC KEEP UP WITH

EXPENSES. MY CONCERN NOW IS THAT WE ONLY HAVE A FEW MORE BRICKS TO SELL

TO SATISFY OUR CURRENT DESIGN IN THE “WALK OF REMEMBRANCE”. WHEN IT IS

COMPLETED WE WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH OTHER IDEAS, OR ANOTHER WALK IN

THE GARDEN SOMEHOW. YOUR IDEAS WILL BE WELCOME. WE SHOULD CONTINUE

WITH THIS GREAT FUND RAISER. THE JJC NEEDS IT.

THE BRICKS ARE SANDBLASTED WITH YOUR INSCRIPTIIONS AND LAST FOR MANY

YEARS. THE BRICKS THAT WERE INSCRIBED IN 2001 STILL LOOK AS GOOD AS NEW. THE

BRICK INSCRIPTIONS CAN HONOR, MEMORIALIZE, CONGRATULATE A LOVED ONE OR

COMMEMORATE A SIMCHA, A LIFE CYCLE EVENT OR JUST NOTE A SLOGAN. YOUR

CHOICE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR PURCHASE OF A BRICK.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EACH BRICK SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 3 LINES AND NO

MORE THAN 13 LETTERS PER BRICK INCLUDING SPACES. THANK YOU. FOR MORE

INFORMATION CALL THE TEMPLE OFFICE AT 938-2540 OR BILL KASSIMIR AT 681-8759.

The 613th commandment of the Torah is to write a Torah. Even writing one

letter of the Torah fulfills this mitzvah.

Every single congregant at Jericho Jewish Center now has the opportunity to

fulfill this mitzvah!!

Jericho Jewish Center will be getting a new sefer Torah in memory of Harriet and

Norman Cohen, z”l.

With this new Torah, we will have many learning and donation opportunities.

The Religious School will be spearheading our first campaign. We will be

collecting 304,805 pennies! Why? That is the exact number of letters written in

a complete Torah. So start bringing your pennies in!!

Dear fellow Congregants & Board members,

On behalf of the Tag Sale Committee I want to thank all who donated items for our first tag sale.

We are grateful that the library (current storage unit) is full. While the official Drop-Off dates have

ended, we are still open to ALL donations (no books except children’s).

If you or someone you know has items to donate, please call the JJC Office to schedule a drop off

time and request help unloading.

We want to recognize Omar, Orlando, Jose & the Office Staff for their assistance - much

appreciated! We also want to thank the following people who not only volunteered their time, but

also for the physical work that was needed to unload, sort & store donations:

Anita Haut Bruce Dorman Judy Solomon Phyllis Jencius Avi Feinstein David Tehranian Leslie Blank Roberta Ende Barbara Rosenblum Diane Charet Martha Perlson Sue Mishan

While we are grateful for their magnificent contributions, this project CANNOT happen without

many more volunteers. Leslie’s friends (Congregation Beth Emeth) in Albany have 140 volunteers

to help set up, work the event and break things down at the end. Temple Isaiah of Great Neck

has 50 and its congregation is 1/3 of ours. We estimate the need for 75 volunteers (June 4th à

June 12th) to set up, work the sale & break down.

YOUR SYNAGOGUE NEEDS YOU! This event is a MAJOR and MUCH NEEDED FUNDRAISER for the JJC. It is also a fantastic opportunity to do a mitzvah for YOUR SHUL and also provide others with the opportunity to purchase things that might not ordinarily be in their price range. Win-Win for all!

PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO LESLIE HARTMAN ([email protected]) to let her know what days

and times you will be volunteering.
