parashat Noach: Loving Others

Being Kind to those who do not complete a taskBut the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself. (B’reisheet 8:9)

Noach sent out a dove to fly above the waters in search of solid ground. When it didn’t find any dry ground, it returned to the ark. Noach reached his hand out and pulled the dove back into the ark.

Once, it happened that Yeshua’s disciples were in the boat fighting against the wind and the waves. In the middle of the night, Yeshua came walking to them on the water—they thought He was a ghost! Shimon called out, “If it’s really you tell me to come to you!” Yeshua told him to come. Shimon dropped from the boat and began walking on water— until he became afraid and started to sink. Yeshua reached out His hand and pulled Shimon to Himself. Shimon’s full name is Shimon son of Yonah. The Hebrew word yonah means “dove.” As a disciple, Shimon failed many times and made mistakes, but Yeshua’s kindness was always with him like Noach’s was with his dove in the ark.
