September News Letter

BANG That’s what the last Plymouth Bike

Night of 2014 went out with. What a brilliant night it was,

453 bikes turned up on the Hoe keeping the marshals busy

all evening parking them and then later making sure they

left in a safe manner.

Swamp Hogs was the group performing keeping every

body entertained bikers and visitors alike, they certainly

played some lively music getting the spectators to do their

best to trample the grass in front of the stage.

Although the bike nights had to miss July this year because

of MTV crashes it has with out doubt been a very

successful year, one of the highlights of course being when

the Red Arrows flew over on August 21st.

Help for Heroes and Jeremiahs Journey are the charities

supported by Plymouth Bike Nights this year. The cheque

presentation will be on the 27th October, The cheques for

the MegaRide, Plymouth Bike Nights and the BHF will

take place at the same time.

Well, what a fantastic run this turned out to be if you didn’t go on this ride you missed what

must be one of the best rides of the year “if not the best”

The first bikes started to arrive at the ferry around 08.30, more and more bikes turned up, by

the time we were due to catch the ferry at 09.30 there were 15 bikes in total.

Some of the riders like Tony and Carrol from Newton Abbot, Pete from Bitteford and Jade

from Plymouth were not club members but came along for the ride and it was good to have

them, they all turned out to be brilliant people and joined in with the rest of us as if we had all

known each other for years.

After leaving the ferry we headed for Lands End with Trevor joining us at Trerulefoot, stopping

on the way at Penzance for fuel and a sandwich. The journey down was uneventful other than

the tail end of an accident that held us up for 10mins at St Austell. The weather was ideal it was

warm when stopped but when riding the breeze kept you cool. From Penzance four bikers

decided to leave the group and do their own thing, three going off to Sennon Cove and one

going to a caravan he owned in Cornwall.

We arrived Lands End at 12.45 with 11 bikes all agreeing that 14.00 would be a good time to

leave and make our way to Bude. We all split up into groups each group doing there own thing.

We were all ready to leave by 14.00 so we set off on the journey to Bude stopping at St Kew for

fuel and a short rest. The second leg of the journey was as uneventful as the first, not too much

traffic about and that allowed us to enjoy the fantastic roads.

Three of the bikes left us to go home on the second leg from St Kew to Bude so 8 bikes arrived

in Bude at 16.00, here some had a cream tea but most opting for a good old cuppa and to bask

in the sun. From Bude every body just made there way home some going in groups others

choosing to go it alone. A brilliant ride on brilliant roads with brilliant people, 200 miles plus.

Thanks must go to Mac for sorting the route and leading the ride, he did recce this rout twice

that I know of to make sure there were no road closures we would encounter and hold us up.

The riding pace was also spot on, a steady pace even the smallest bikes could keep up with.

The biggest thanks must go to Trevor for getting the ice creams in, THANKS TREVOR.

MONDAY NIGHT RIDES

Monday the 29th is the last ride out of 2014 and it’s a short ride. With the

extended good weather (except for a few hiccups in the forecast earlier in

the year) we have had this year attendances for the rides has been very

good, with members and at times a few non members taking advantage

of the weather to get out and about on a nice evening.

Over the winter months perhaps you would like to give some thought to

putting forward new routes to ride next year. If there is a particular route

that is a favourite of yours why not mention it to one of the committee,

the club is always open to suggestions of any sort that will benefit the

club and its members, so, come on get that old grey matter working.

With the summer rides coming to an end there will be four Sunday lunch

time rides in October. The first ride will be on the 5th you will be going

to Princetown, second is on the 12th and you will be going to Dawlish,

for the third ride the Smugglers in Seaton is the destination, for the final

ride Padstow will be the lunch time stop off.

These rides will give you a chance to have a rest from the cooker before

the onslaught of winter when the weather may be to bad to get out on the

bike, then you will wish you had gone so make the best of it while you

can.

All the rides will be meeting at Marsh Mill where we meet for the

Monday rides, the rides will be leaving at 11.30 so please make sure you

are there by 11.00 so you don’t miss out.

As usual please make sure you have a tank full of fuel before you go.

WINTER MONTHS With the onslaught of winter, the dark nights, maybe its time to have a

sort through that old gear you no longer want. If you buy the same sort of

gear I do, over the years the waist band seems to shrink a bit, it’s a

mystery why, but it happens.

If you have any gear you would like to move on why not give me the

details? in fact any thing you have bike related including bikes I'll put it

in a news letter for you and see if we can move it on.

For sale is this CBR 1100 Blackbird, the bike is in very good condition

has less than 32000mls on the clock 11months MOT but is on Sorn at the

moment.

The asking price is £2000 ono that’s a lot of bike for the money, you are

The Government has confirmed that the demise of the tax disc will coincide with a range of new rules. To clarify, from October 1st 2014 no

vehicle will be required to display a disc in its windscreen. Even valid discs that expire (say) in January 2015 will be superfluous. Why the change? Because discs are simply receipts that can be checked by the police to ensure vehicles are taxed. This is no longer necessary as compliance is enforced via a computer-based database. The Government has also

revealed that motorists will be able to pay by direct debit annually, six-monthly or monthly. Those that pay by instalments will incur a five percent surcharge and payments will continue until cancelled. However, there will be some people that cannot pay in this manner such as those with first registration vehicles, in fleet schemes and with HGVs (paying the Road User Levy). And there will be more changes. Motorists that sell cars privately will no longer be entitled to offer the “unexpired tax” incentive that adds value. Why? Because the absence of discs could make it easier for sellers to misrepresent how much tax is remaining. So, sellers will have

to claim refunds for remaining months from the DVLA. Buyers will then re-tax online, at post offices, or via the phone before taking to the road.

ROAD TAX Would all members read and take note of the new tax laws below please.

Don’t think this does not apply to you, it applies to every one of us, I

know I have posted it a couple of times already but it is very important

and it comes into effect a matter of days after you receive this news letter.

As it says below these laws come into effect from 1st October 2014

STEVE FORD

As nearly all members will know by now Steve one of the long standing

members of the club had a heart attack on the 22nd of August.

Steve was rushed to hospital and while he was in there had two stents

fitted, Steve recovered well and was only in hospital a short time before

being discharged.

You will all be pleased to know Steve is well on the way to making a full

recovery, in fact he is on holiday at the moment.

I’m sure you will join me in wishing Steve all the very best and hope he

continues to make a speedy recovery.
