Charity ride out with Cornwall Riders Club

On Sunday 10th July, at 7.30am riders from our club met at the Tamar Bridge , then journeyed down to „Piggies‟ near

Indian Queens to join with the Cornwall Riders Club, for a charity rideout to support the Precious Lives Appeal.

They are a small band of riders that we have had associations with in the past - some will remember the rounders

matches that were great fun- always riddled with accusations of cheating and bringing in „ringers‟. (all in good hu-

mour of course).

The choice of where to go and what to support on the 10th was challenging because there were several other mo-

torcycle charity events happening, - the Devon Air Ambulance annual ride being one of them, Damerells St Austell

were running one and so, unfortunately, with members being away on trips, our numbers were lower than last year.

Having been guided by Mac‟s satnav and on reaching Royston‟s (Cornwall Riders) house - well, estate really - we

were greeted by their members and treated to generous portions of Bacon butties and tea, before paying our donations,

talking to the Alpacas, admiring his fish pond and finally setting off on our trip to the coast. Great to be taken to places

that I hadn‟t been to before without worrying about getting lost and as we were in their territory, the leaders knew all

the scenic routes and cut throughs.

Our first port of call was down to St. Mawes - very nice - (must go there again and stay a little longer.) - and after ne-

gotiations with the man in the car park about where to put the bikes, it was time for a cuppa - and then a bonus - the sun

came out!

Refreshed and raring to go, it was on to our next destination - the King Harry Ferry across the River Fal then on to-

wards Truro. This was where we realised that the other charity events were happening - we reached the main road to

be confronted by a mass of bikers all heading in the same direction as us.

Truro town centre was awash with traffic - so it really was a matter of spotting Royston‟s orange helmet and following

that as we filtered through, and past ,the cars and bikes, hoping we wouldn‟t pick up hundreds of bikers following us

thinking we were all in the same ride! Luckily there were marshals waiting for them at their turn off - but we did get

some enquiring looks when we went straight on!

Our final destination was the Blue Anchor pub at Fraddon, where those who wanted a meal ate as we all sat ouside and

chatted loudly , as usual, for what must have been an hour - it was one of those times that if you weren‟t riding, you

could easily have stayed on for a few pints of the real ale. - some even managed to keep up with the Formula 1 race on

TV..

All too soon it was time to say our farewells and head home. The weather man had given out the possibility of showers

- but, we had good conditions throughout the day. Many thanks go to the Cornwall Riders for their hospitality and good

company.

A good time was had by all

Denis

There is a new MAG group starting on 10/08/2011 in Lee Mill at the Westward Inn, 8pm start.

I believe that there are a number of campaigns that the local members would like to at least be aware of, for example.

* Mandatory high-viz - making it illegal to NOT wear, taking away the option.

* Anti "tampering" laws - unable to change air filters from manufacturers spec for example

* Get-a-grip - relating to the condition of roads, potholes and the like.

Just to mention a few Would you please let the club members know about this group ? Thanks Neil Stone

New events - just in.

A little boy walks into his parents bedroom while they are having sex. “What are you doing?2 he asks. “We’re making a

RAFT RACE

Don‟t want to worry you lads - but look at the

size of the opponents drums!

Shouldn‟t we be above the water level?

Illegal immigrants were a problem - nobody knew the

penguin, and not forgetting Steve the Stowaway in the

raft / trailer at the back!

If you have anything interesting to contribute -

perhaps pictures and a bit of blurb - please

sent it through to me at

Raft Race report “Yo ho ho me hearties, hoist the mainsail!” Was the initial cry that soon turned to “I don’t want to

die like this!!!!!!” as intrepid club members set out to sea on a raft that we had built to take part in a race under the

Tamar Bridge to support the BHF.

It was a scorcher of a day as the contenders set out the rafts on the slipway outside the RABI pub watched by a grow-

ing number of spectators - all there to contribute and encourage the teams taking part.

Our team consisted of Steve Ford, ably assisted by Allison , Trevor Pridham, Kevin Freer, Keith Wallace, and myself,

supported by Ritchie, Les Rainsford and members of our families.- Our team benefited from having the ideal mix for

this type of event - muscular males , in peak condition ,with endless knowledge of sea and tide conditions - well - put

it this way - Trev‟s got a boat , Keith used to be in a canoe club twenty years ago, and Steve used to work with the life-

boats - what more could you want! We were confident of collecting a trophy and the raft had been built during the pre-

vious week by the lads - well done guys -and was a sight to behold.- see pics.

First thing we noticed was the size of the other teams efforts - one raft held about twenty people - mind you - they‟d

done it before - so knew what the challenges were. Fancy dress was in evidence with an 007 theme and the pink ladies.

Okay - we were asked to put our creations in the water - the first time for ours, -and we duly boarded - noting that the

platform was only just floating above the surface of the water - (note for if there is a next time - bigger drums and try it

out first!) - Eventually, after making sure we were all facing the right way - we set off paddling to try and catch the rest

(because we didn‟t know the race had actually started, and they were gone!) paddling instructions were - one, two, one,

two, left, left, LEFT! LEFT!

The idea of the race was to get to the other side - touch and then get back first to the slipway.. As we reached the half-

way point across the river, the other rafts disappeared rapidly off into the distance as if they had outboards, leaving us

to the mercy of the still incoming tide, desperately turning in circles and gradually making our way up towards

Calstock! It‟s so frustrating when you are paddling like hell and still going backwards! “Ah well there‟s a nice pub up

there”!

It was then that we decided to change tactics, abandon all hopes of actually completing the course, and just ambush the

leaders with the stock of water bombs in our trailer dinghy on their return journey. All this time we were in fits of

laughter at our situation, and surrounded by small inflatables prepared to rescue us if needed. Well, after half an hour

or more of paddling, the actual race had finished, the victors were on the slipway spraying champagne and celebrating,

leaving us being towed (slowly so as not to suddenly turn into a submarine) ,still paddling, back towards the shore

(mind you - we did manage the last 20 metres on our own ) singing “row, row row your boat, landed and then pep-

pered the cheering - (or was it jeering) crowd with the water bomb supplies.

We did get a trophy - errrrm - forget what it was for - but it didn‟t really matter - it was a brilliant laugh ,a great day,

and well worth the effort.

Editor.

From the chairs Hi Guys and Girls Without wanting to repeat myself too much, the Megaride is getting closer - this year is our chance to shine as a club and show everyone what we can achieve working as a team. We are still asking for volunteers (there can never be too many) to help at Lee Mill between 7am and 12 midday and on the Hoe between 10.30 am and 17.00. Sue and I have been attending ESAG (Emergency Services Advisory Group) meetings with the various governing bodies. Because of this, Health and Safety plays a major part in this event, hence we need people to assist with the not so glamorous parts of the event, i.e. looking after Fire extinguisher stations and spill kits. Also, at the end of the day we have to make sure that the Hoe is tidy so we don’t lose our deposit .Whatever time you can spare please email Denis with your mobile number and give him an idea what length of time you will be there so we can make up a list of helpers and the times they are available and confirm it with you.

Thank you Ritch Bounds
