PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Hats Off” To A Special Volunteer BY KATHY MCHUGH October 2014 I am thrilled to devote my monthly soapbox to recognizing one of NEDA’s most valuable and dedicated volunteers, without meaning to thereby lessen in any way the value of the contributions of so many others on whom NEDA relies for it very existence. Tracie Richardson has been involved with NEDA in one way or another for many years on many fronts, as you will read in the profile below, but for most of the time that I have been involved, she has been editor of the Tip. I actually wasn’t aware of all the other things she did for NEDA at the same time, which are detailed in the profile below. But she took on the Tip out of shared frustration with its timely delivery to our members, which, at the time, was often over a month late – a real problem for a monthly publication! Tracie got the publication on track and out the door in a timely fashion and continued to edit the publication for over ten years. It’s been our lifeline to our members, and she filled it with interesting articles about our programs and activities both before and after. She was rewarded almost annually with awards from USDF for articles, layout, design and/or all three. Her work involved many frustrations, some of which were caused by her own colleagues in their timely production of articles concerning their own NEDA activities, but Tracie always rose above whatever challenges there were to get the Tip to you with everything you needed to know. On behalf of the board, I want to thank her for keeping us all focused for all that time on what YOU needed to know and see in our premiere publication. And to members, please join me in thanking Tracie as well. Even though she’ll no longer be a board member, I’m sure we’ll all continue to see her at NEDA events, either competing or volunteering. So stop and thank her if you see her. Kathy McHugh

President’s Message

“Hats Off ” To A Special VolunteerBy Kathy Mchugh

October 2014

I am thrilled to devote my monthly soapbox to recognizing one of NEDA’s most valuable and dedicated volunteers, without meaning to thereby lessen in any way the value of the contributions of so many others on whom NEDA relies for it very existence. It’s

been our lifeline to our members, and she filled it with interesting articles about our programs and activities both before and after. So stop and thank her if you see her.

neda MeMBer Profile

Tracie Richardsoncurrent neda Position: tiP of the hat newsletter editor

Tracie was selected for this month’s Member Profile to thank her for all she has done for NEDA over the years. Tracie is the type of volunteer an organization like ours can never get enough of. Her participation with NEDA began in the 90’s when she volunteered at the fall show in Halifax. Tracie’s involvement continued over the years and in 2000 she joined the board leading the junior, young rider program, assisting setting up clinics. From there she moved into board positions as Secretary and then Public Relations. Most recently you probably know her as TIP editor. Of all her many

roles and years with NEDA her favorite has been as a volunteer at the fall show where she has had the opportunity to “meet a lot of great volunteers and watch some wonderful horses and riders.”  A regular fixture managing the warm-up area, Tracie excels at getting riders to the ring on time and never loses her calm and upbeat attitude.

Tracie retired from TJ Maxx in 1995 to follow her passion for horses and built Black Cat Farm in Hanover, MA as a private farm. In 2000 having acquired some lesson horses she began to run the farm as a business developing a large children’s lesson program. Three years ago Tracie changed her business plan and started to focus more on adult lessons. Today all her boarders and 75% of her lesson program are adults. She also travels in the area to teach lessons.

In 2001 she decided to focus primarily on dressage, purchased a dressage schoolmaster “Charlie,” and started training with Jane Hannigan of Harvard, MA. At age 16 Charlie was a great teacher, but when he was 19, Tracie began looking for her next dressage horse. One of her goals was to train and show a horse up the levels. It took almost two years but in 2005, Tracie and Jane spotted Armani, a stunning Dutch horse by Rousseau. Only weeks old, it was love at first sight. His breeder Lesley Feakins showed him quite successfully until he was 2 years old, including success at Devon, at which point Tracie took over with another year of breed shows. An education for

both of them! Tracie began showing Armani under saddle as a four year old culminating in their Bronze Medal this year at spring NEDA! Tracie has loved the journey and credits both Jane and Armani who has been a very willing partner.

Those who are lucky enough to train with Tracie find her to be a gifted and patient trainer.  She always puts safety first and is always positive and encouraging. She truly wants her students to succeed and continues her own education by attending clinics and shows and taking regular lessons herself.  Tracie has helped many students solidify the basics of dressage and go on to earn bronze and silver medals.  Horses and students are relaxed and happy at Tracie’s barn and that is a recipe for success. She is selfless in her desire to assist her students and always willing to suggest new solutions to help them achieve their goals, be it a medal, or a pleasant trail ride. She is also involved in the local therapeutic riding program, assisting and judging at their annual show.

Those who have gone to shows with her know what a great cheerleader she is with her bottomless energy, her ability to keep everyone calm and on schedule and to pretty much just always be wherever she’s most needed. And those of us who have had the good fortune to volunteer alongside Tracie value her dedication, attitude and willingness to jump in no matter what is needed.

Tracie, from all of us at NEDA, thank you!

How NEDA Has Improved My RidingBy iris Berdrow

As an educator, this reminds me of the classic “what I did on my summer vacation” essay. As a student dedicated to the life-long pursuit of riding mastery, this is a story of gratitude. My NEDA membership has given me two gifts this year and I want to share them with all of you.

The first is the flextime program. As a board member, I have sat in on the discussions regarding the confusion about “flextime”. Let me explain how I have come to understand this program – riding with the stars without the fear of television cameras! Ever envy the symposium riders who get in front of the big names trainers knowing it will never be you? Ever feel really sorry for the symposium riders because they are being trained by those big names IN PUBLIC? Well, the flextime lessons give you a chance to ride with excellent trainers in private. These are trainers that you might not normally have access to, that have a different style and approach than your regular trainer, and for whom you don’t have to pay an exorbitant fee. As stated on the NEDA website, Lessons are $45 for JR/YR and $50 for AA each.  Medal members may use their Medal Event Certificate as payment for a Flextime lesson.  Also, Spring Promotion Education coupons may be applied towards Flextime lessons.

This summer I had two flextime lessons, with Bill McMullin of Warren-McMullin Dressage at Drywater Farm in Stoughton, MA; and Beth Beukema, the Director of the Center for Equine Studies at Johnson and Wales University, in Rehoboth, MA. This year there were over 50 trainers to choose from, an amazing array of talent available to a regular rider like me! While I love my trainer, Lainey Johnson (even

more so because she came to both my flextime lessons), we both agree that you can learn something new, or hear the same old message in a new way, from someone different. And I did. My horse, “Beckett” and I gained so much from these two lessons.

As a result of my flextime lesson, Lainey Johnson arranged a Balance in Motion clinic offered by Beth Beukema, at our barn, Highland Hill Farm in Berlin, MA. The domino effect is powerful.

These sessions spurred me forward in gaining balance, connection, confidence, and experience. Beckett proved he is capable of dealing with different settings and higher demands. We took this inspired confidence to the NEDA Strongwater Park Schooling Show in Tewksbury, MA. NEDA donates the proceeds to the Strongwater Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center (www.strongwaterfarm.org), a bonus for civic minded riders who want to share the fun.

The show is run by volunteers Diana Lane and Kristin Smith, and they do a great job! The show grounds are well signed so you can’t miss it. There is ample easy parking for cars and trailers. The huge warmup area was well groomed. The ring footing was excellent. The entry process was easy, ride times available in plenty of time for planning, and packages were available early in the day. The best was the amazingly friendly, low pressure, helpful attitude of everyone – the judge, the scribe, the runners, the ring stewards, food vendors, and especially Diana and Kristin.

And it was a supportive environment for Beckett and me to learn that not all show days are fun and perfect. Never have I learned more clearly that you need to ride the horse you have that day, not the one you remember in your own arena. I also learned that 2 tests are good (if you blow one and ace one, you can feel 50% good), and riding can be a humbling experience! So while the flextime lessons boosted my morale, clearly there is more work to be done.

Thanks NEDA for providing the resources I need to continue on this journey. And to all of you, use the flextime program and Strongwater Farm schooling shows. You will love them!

Looking Forward To The Fall SymposiumThe NEDA Fall Symposium featuring Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Ina Goesmeier will be held at Apple Knoll in Millis, MA on November 1 & 2, 2014. The program will include power point presentations by Dr. Goesmeier and live training demonstrations facilitated by Ingrid Klimke. The horses will range from 4 year olds to Grand Prix veterans; all will be demonstrating varied exercises with cavaletti.

The committee will be working to complete the selection process and provide the demonstration horse/rider combinations that best illustrate the facilitator’s philosophy. We will be looking for demonstration horse/rider partnerships from both dressage and eventing disciplines.

Younger lower level horses can be 4, 5 or 6 and will be demonstrating the beginning process of cavaletti work. Intermediate or mid level horses need to be able to do simple changes and/or flying lead changes; they also will be using cavaletti.

More experienced (older) horses will be exhibiting the more advanced movements using increasingly intricate exercises and again will be using cavaletti. All must be able to handle the situation of an arena surrounded by auditors. The application process is outlined on the NEDA website under the Fall Symposium page. The deadline is Wednesday, October 8th to submit demo rider applications!

Again just to clarify how the demonstration combinations get chosen; please be assured it is not a popularity contest, nor is it a statement about anyone’s ability as a rider/trainer. It is the goal of the selection committee to provide the facilitator the horse/rider combination that can help demonstrate their method accurately and clearly to the auditor.

An applicant who is a perfectly wonderful rider with a fabulous horse may not be appropriate because they don’t present the issues the facilitator wants to address via their methodology.

Auditor applications are coming in at a pretty good clip. The online auditor sign up is live on the NEDA website and very easy to use. Remember, there is limited space so sign up soon if you are interested.

There is a significant discount available to NEDA members who pre-register and the pre-registration date has been extended to October 15th.

Depending on availability, there will be walk-in rates on a per day basis. Again, all the fees are listed on the auditor forms posted on the NEDA website and in this newsletter. Juniors are all $50.00 whether they are NEDA members or not in order to encourage them to attend.

The website also has a link to the Hampton Inn which is the host hotel. Again, there is a limit on the number of rooms so I encourage you all to sign up as early as possible to ensure you have a spot. When booking your hotel room you must request the NEDA rate only available until October 3rd.

If you have any additional questions and/or are having any issues registering please contact Kate O’Connor at [email protected]. Also, if you have any groups you would like to bring, please contact Kate for additional information. Most all the information you need can be found on the website: neda.org.

USDF Convention Comes To Region 8!deceMBer 3-7, 2014, caMBridge hyatt

Did you know that the USDF Convention will be coming to the Boston Area December 3-7, 2014? YES, it is! For the first time ever, Region 8 will be hosting the USDF Convention. The USDF website is where you would register and see the schedule of events. If you’ve never been to a USDF convention this is your chance to see how the national governance body operates. The agenda includes educational events, demonstrations and silent auction.

There will be a welcome party open to all on Thursday December 4 at Ned Devine’s in Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market. Bus transportation will be provided free of charge from the Cambridge Hyatt to the party and then back to the hotel at various times. A ticketed event for a dinner cruise in Boston Harbor is also scheduled. The annual awards Gala celebrates the achievements of some of our top riders and is on Saturday evening.

Information on the convention as well as online registration can be found on the USDF website: www.usdf.org. Consult your local GMO to inquire on how you can participate in this first of its kind event. I know there is a need for volunteers to act in a variety of roles during the convention.

13 A TIP OF THE HAT | NEDA.ORG October 2014

Having recently taken on the position responsible for NEDA Year-End Awards, I reviewed three years worth of award entry submissions… the findings were both fascinating and enlightening:

1. Year over year, many award winners advanced their horses one level while remaining in the award standings

2. Several award winners won awards in multiple divisions with different horses.

3. Most award winners remained NEDA members throughout this three year period.

Whatever one’s goals are for submitting scores for Year-End Award recognition, NEDA’s aim is to recognize and callout those folks striving to learn, advance and develop their horses talent to its fullest potential.

As the 2014 show season winds down, many of you are considering your scores and their eligibility for submission toward the 2014 NEDA Year-End Awards.

A quick set of reminders which may prove useful:

1. Horse owners and riders must be current 2014 NEDA members

2. Year-End Mounted Dressage Awards as well as Sport Horse Breeding Awards must be RECEIVED in HAND by Monday, October 6, 2014 to be eligible for awards. (On-line submission using the form found at NEDA.org or mailed to J. Stanley Edwards/ NEDA Year-End Awards, 30 Old Littleton Rd, Harvard, MA 01451)

3. Scores are to be earned during the competition year which is October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014

4. Details regarding award eligibility, complete rules and on-line submission forms can be found HERE!

5. The 2014 NEDA Year-End Award celebration will be held during NEDA’s Spring Dressage Show in May of 2015.

Here’s to a successful completion of the 2014 show season!

I’m happy to answer any questions and am excited to hear from you. Please email me at [email protected]

On September 7, 2014, the second show in the series was held at Strongwater Park in Tewksbury, MA. The weather was perfect for showing and the riders in attendance seemed very happy with the grounds.

NEDA Schooling Show To Benefit Strongwater Farm Therapeutic Equestrian CenterBy diana lane

There were 42 rides. The show date had moved from the first week in August to Sept. 7, in hopes for a better attendance. Based on the very positive feedback, we believe that next year will be a full day. We plan a special award for farms and/or trainers bringing the most riders next year, so please mark your calendars.

While the complete results can be found on NEDA website, neda.org, here are the highlights.

Our judge was Leslie de Grandmaison, who has supported Strongwater for many years. Leslie is also very generous in donating gift certificates awarded to the volunteers. This year it was to Smartpak and was won in a drawing, by Sandra Balkus. Sandra was also a competitor, who just happened to hang around long enough to be pressed into service for the afternoon! This is the first time she has volunteered for NEDA, but she has volunteered for Strongwater for many years, so it was well deserved.

We’re so grateful to Carole MacDonald, NEDA photographer for recording all the competitors and so faithfully supporting this show.

Special Thanks to the VolunteersMary Ann Lane, Martha Walsh, Kristin Powers, Paula Adelman, Lindsey Marlowe, Fred Ernshaw, Julie Beaulieu and especially to Co-manager/Secretary Kristin Smith.

Strongwater volunteers Linda Marlow and Sandy Picard provided food, fun and good conversation and donated all proceeds to Strongwater Farm.

Ten candidates, including two from the Midwest and one from North Carolina, just completed their final testing for the “L” Part II.  Prior to the testing, all candidates completed all three sessions of the “L” Part I, as well as two weekends of practice judging at major competitions in New England.

The NEDA Fall Festival hosted the testing event.  After a 300 question closed book written exam Friday night, examiners Trenna Atkins and Gary Rockwell grilled the ten candidates individually via oral judging.  In addition, the candidates’ written judged test scores and comments

were compared to scores and related comments given by the examiners.    Although the testing was somewhat stressful, the candidates commented afterwards on how much they had learned through the “L” Part I and Part II sessions.  At this point, it is just a matter of waiting to determine whether or not they passed and if they did, did they pass “with distinction”, a designation that indicates they have met the “L” qualification to continue on to apply for the USEF “r” Dressage Judge program.

Many thanks to the volunteer scribes and scorers who assisted as well as a big thank you to Suzanne Mente who served as an efficient, supportive manager for the weekend’s activity.

2014 neda fall festiVal of dressage

Hundreds Of Competitors And Volunteers Bask In Perfect WeatherBy lynndee KeMMet

Saugerties, New York – This year’s Fall Festival of Dressage could not have ordered better weather for the nearly 700 competitors who participated in the annual show, which includes breed competition, the U.S. Dressage Federation’s Region 8 Championships, para-dressage competition and a CDI. A total of 1,731 rides were scheduled, up 133 from the year before. It was truly a global event with riders representing countries from throughout North America and Europe.

It wasn’t just riders, however, who traveled afar to attend the 2014 Fall Festival of Dressage, held September 18-21. The contingent of 140 super volunteers represented not only a large number of U.S. states but also other countries. It’s hard work being a show volunteer but for two European women working in New York City, the Fall Festival was a fabulous weekend vacation.

It was during a trip to New York’s Hudson Valley with her husband that Laura Nelson, a human rights attorney with the United Nations in New York City, learned about the Fall Festival. She went online looking for horse events in the region and read about the upcoming NEDA show being held in the Hudson Valley at the HITS show grounds in Saugerties. Nelson is from Denmark and still has a horse back home and when she followed links to NEDA’s website, she saw the call for volunteers for the Fall Festival. “I was in need of a horse fix,” she said, “And I thought this would be a good way to get it.”

So Nelson signed up to be a volunteer at the NEDA show. Then she began to wonder if there were other U.N. employees who were equestrian fans. She

put out a call through the U.N.’s internal website asking if anyone else might be interested in joining her as a Fall Festival volunteer. Her posting got a response from Isabeau de Challemaison, a U.N. employee from France who works as a French translator. De Challemaison also grew up riding horses.

“We didn’t know each other before this,” de Challemaison said. “But I saw her post and so I contacted her. I thought how nice to spend a weekend around horses.” The two women rented a car and took off for the NEDA show right after work on Friday. They spent their Saturday and Sunday running all around the show grounds doing whatever task was needed. “These two were amazing. They were so pleasant and would do anything,” said show coordinator Beth Jenkins. Well, almost anything. “I didn’t want to be a scribe because my English skills, well, they are not the best,” said de Challemaison.

“This is an unbelievable event,” said Nelson while she enjoyed NEDA’s free competitor’s party on Saturday evening. “You certainly don’t go hungry working here and all of the show staff are wonderful people. I am here in this beautiful weather and I spend all day watching these wonderful horses and riders. It’s like a dream vacation.”

When the show closed Sunday evening the two new friends jumped in the car for the two-hour drive back to New York City in order to be in the office early Monday just in time for the opening of the Climate Summit at the U.N., which was playing host to political leaders from around the world. One thing both said was for certain, they would never forget their NEDA Fall Festival weekend.
