A Sad, but Sweet Back Story BY CINDY SYDNOR & ANGELA PRENOSIL In 2004, the Ann Villani Memorial Scholarship Award was born. Here’s a little story about how Ann, knowing she might pass from her cancer, made sure her young horse’s future stayed bright. Cindy Sydnor is a native Milton, Massachusetts. But she spent 2 years in Vienna, Austria, and Germany, to begin to learn dressage! She married a rider from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. They imported a TB gelding from Brazil and spent four years there. Cindy tried out for the Pan Am and Olympic Games of 1975 and 76 on this same horse, returning to Massachusetts in 1972. Sydnor began training and teaching in 1977 and moved to Snow Camp, North Carolina. She returned to New England to give clinics and met Ann Villani during that time period. In 2003, Ann asked Cindy to do a clinic at Amethyst Farm in Amherst, MA and invited Cindy to stay at her lovely townhouse. Ann had already been through treatment and surgery for cancer but was not doing well, as the cancer returned. She asked Cindy if she would take her young horse Onno, at some point in the future, meaning if she didn’t make it. Cindy didn’t know what to say, so she said, “If it gives you peace of mind, of course, I will take him. But please don’t make me do it!” When Ann died that same December, Cindy attended her memorial service, a terribly sad time. Soon after, she was contacted by Ann’s brother, who is a lawyer and was taking care of her affairs. Ann’s beloved horse, Onno came to Cindy very soon after with all his belongings: saddle, bridles, blankets, special alfalfa pellets, and insurance. Onno’s show record is as follows: first, second, third, fourth levels, and PSG and Intermediaire-1. Now at 17 years old, he does piaffe and passage and several one-tempis. Since his colic surgery in 2011, Cindy has shown him at Intermediaire-1 with good scores in the sixties. Cindy says “I love him for himself, because he is an exceptional horse. I also love him in Ann’s memory”. She has a photo of Ann on a shelf in her entry way. It makes her happy to see Ann’s smiling face. Onno lives out almost 24 hours a day in a 20-acre pasture with eight other horses, mares and geldings. He is king out there but is not nasty. Nor has he ever hurt another horse. He’s a real gentleman who deserves and gets respect. Cindy is confident Ann would be very pleased with the life Onno has had! March/April 2014 While Cindy keeps Ann’s memories alive through her horse, NEDA offers a very nice $1000.00 memorial award each year because of the generous donations received by all that knew and loved Ann and what she stood for. Consider nominating a special someone you know for this special award!

A Sad, but Sweet Back Story by Cindy Sydnor & AngelA PrenoSil

In 2004, the Ann Villani Memorial Scholarship Award was born.

But please don’t make me do it!”

When Ann died that same December, Cindy attended her memorial service, a terribly sad time.

While Cindy keeps Ann’s memories alive through her horse, NEDA offers a very nice $1000.00 memorial award each year because of the generous donations received by all that knew and loved Ann and what she stood for. Consider nominating a special someone you know for this special award!

NEDA is Going Green!by KATHy MCHUgH

NEDA is finally joining the ranks of most other dressage organizations and many nonprofits and transforming the Tip of the Hat into electronic form. We have hung onto our beloved printed Tip for much longer than most other organizations, but printing the Tip is both costly and wasteful. In addition an electronic Tip will permit us to link you to other resources from within articles, pictures can become videos – and can be in color! Our sponsors can present themselves in color and with links to their websites and to special deals for member readers. We think it will open a new world of journalistic possibilities for us and broaden your horizons.

We realize that not everyone is able to receive the Tip in this format. Despite the fact that you will be missing out on all the new features that an electronic format offers, we will be able to print out the electronic version and mail it to those who cannot receive it in this form. We will offer that service for free for the remainder of this year, but will have to consider an add-on fee for a print version of the Tip in the next membership year, depending on our experience this year. The May Tip will be the last one commercially printed and mailed.

If you are unable to receive the Tip electronically and would like to receive a printed version, please email me at [email protected] or send me a note at 64 Pearl Street, Charlestown, MA 02129, including your name and address, and I will insure that

you continue to receive a printed version of the Tip throughout the current membership year. If you can receive it electronically but aren’t sure if NEDA has your email address, please check with Tammy Paparella at [email protected] so she can check and update your profile if needed. And if you’d rather NEDA not have your email address, the electronic version will be posted on the website in a members only section as soon as it is released via email.

Give us a few months to figure out how to realize the full potential of this new format, and I think you’ll be pleased with the results. We try to stretch your membership dollar to provide as much bang for your buck as we can. We feel the dollars spent on printing can be better spent on supporting educational activities and the other in-person events where we can get to know one another and share our successes and challenges. You’ll continue to get The Salute, our beautiful full-color annual report in the early spring, and the Omnibus Prize List – the New England dressage rider’s “little black book.”

On November 23, NEDA members gathered at the Cambridge Hyatt to celebrate the 2013 show season. Members traveled from as far away as New York to enjoy the Year End Award banquet. The evening opened with a cocktail hour and was followed by a dinner of seasonal foods and a chocolate dessert sampler that left everyone raving.

After dinner, NEDA President Kathy McHugh gave a brief year in review, highlighting the events of the year and the new website. This was followed by our keynote speaker, sports psychologist Dr Jenny Susser, who discussed ‘How Did We Get Here?’.

Dr Susser delivered a fun-filled discussion on the various reasons that brought everyone together at the awards celebration. She discussed realistic goal setting which match saddle time and mental preparation both on and off the horse. What do you think about while riding around the ring waiting for the

judge to ring the bell? This thought provoking question registered with many of the attendees.

After Dr Susser’s presentation, the award winners in attendance were honored. Everyone was thankful to our sponsors: Mountain Horse who provided the beautiful Champion jackets and Dover

2013 Show Celebration

Saddlery who provided the Reserve Champion saddle pads. Following the award presentation, the winner of the table decorating contest was announced…Candace Platz of Maine. Finally, Master of Ceremonies Paul Eason opened up the dance floor. It was a fun night of celebration for all!

The snow is piling up outside. The horses are layered in blankets and we yearn for spring.

This is a good time to pull out the calendar and plan your show season.

A great place to start is with the Strongwater Park Schooling Series, located in Tewksbury, MA.

The first show is Sunday, May 4, a week before NEDA Spring Show.

This is a nice, low key show to reintroduce your horse to the warm-up area and maybe try out a new level /test.

Maybe you haven’t shown in awhile?

New horse? Old horse?

Strongwater Park Schooling SeriesPlease come and show with us.

We welcome everyone. The judges are USDF certified, the volunteers are friendly and we do our best to keep everyone relaxed and happy. There’s plenty of trailer parking right in view of the rings.

Best of all your entry fees go to a worthwhile cause.

Strongwater Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center (formerly known as T.H.E FARM) Is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organizations and PATH Premier Accredited Center, http://www.pathintl.org providing equine assisted therapeutic programs for the general public, as well as for clients of Tewksbury Hospital, schools and other service agencies. http://www.strongwaterfarm.org/, including U.S Veteran’s organizations, Horses for Heroes, and The Wounded Warrior Project.

Those of us who have the good fortune to be with horses recognize the sense of well being that comes from being around them. I have personally observed this in others at Strongwater Farm.

Horses are good therapists.

They don’t ask for much and give so much in return.

Please come out to the schooling show, you’ll have a good time, get some good feedback from the judges and help others have the opportunity to feel the love a horse can give.

NEDA has supported and managed this schooling show for 11 years and with your support, hopefully, many more.

Mark your calendars! “The Shindig”, will be held on Saturday night May 10, 2014 at the Marshfield Fair Grounds, home of the New England Dressage 2014 Spring Show. This event is for all competitors of the Spring Show and all NEDA members. There will be a cocktail hour with a cash bar, dinner buffet and music/dancing for all to enjoy.

Spring Show Fun!by KArin SWAnFeldT

This event is a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of your show season, chat with friends you have not seen over the cold winter months and just have a ROCKING GOOD TIME! The event will kick off after the last rider of the day which is around 6ish and will wrap up by 9pm. The Shindig gives everyone a place to have dinner and drinks right on the show grounds. Then you can check your horses for the night and return to the

hotel for a good nights sleep. What better way to enjoy your weekend.

Tickets may be purchased for 35.00 per person through Sue McKeown, our Show Secretary and there will be tickets available on the grounds in the show office on Friday May 9, 2014. Please do not wait to buy your tickets because you could miss out on this super time. See you all at “The Shindig”

$upport the $pring $how:

NEDA is getting ready for the 2014 competition season and the Spring Show will be here in a matter of weeks. This show has always been successful and a crowd pleaser with competitors and spectators. In order to keep it a financial success, competition management is asking for some support from our members in the form of Class Sponsorships.

In 2013 we had nearly 60 classes spread over the two days of the show but only 10 class sponsors. It would be great if we have sponsors for every class. You as an individual, a farm or just a group of friends can sponsor can a class for just $35.

The show will be offering classes from Training Level 1 through Grand Prix and this one way you can let people know you support NEDA. All you have to do is send a check for $35 per class, made out to NEDA, your name as you wish it to appear in the program* and your choice of class you wish to sponsor.

Thanks for your support.

O nce Again show season is fast approaching. Yes, snow may be all around us now, but just wait... in a few short weeks, the ground will start thawing, and our thoughts will turn once again to competition. As you know NEDA depends heavily upon its members for our shows to run smoothly and seemingly effortless (if you only knew!). We are profoundly grateful to our volunteers, each and every one an integral part of all NEDA shows, clinics and events.

The first NEDA show of 2014 is NEDA Spring Dressage Competition at Marshfield Fair Grounds on

May 10 & 11, and show organizers are looking for volunteers in all areas. This is a wonderful opportunity to join in and help out NEDA, have some fun, and gain valuable experience while you’re at it.

Calling All Volunteers: Show Season Is Coming!NEDA is in need of volunteers in the following capacities:

■ Stable Manager

■ Scorers

■ Awards

■ Runners

■ Ring Stewards

■ Office Help

■ Pre-show set up

If you’re interested in volunteering for the Spring Show, please contact Paul Cormier, Competition Manager, at (508) 847-2931 or email at MarquisdeMud @aol.com.

Manager is getting old and really needs a few good people for set up.
