Two “Open to All” parties will be held. First, Thursday late afternoon at the Breed Show, Hof Mendenhall will once again sponsor a wine and cheese party while presenting the awards for the $5,400 New England Sport Horse Breeder’s Futurity. On Saturday early evening, The Equestrian Center a Pineland Farms, for the second year, will host the “Great Pumpkin” party in the VIP Pavilion, featuring judged Golf Cart Decorations and Hoola Hoop Contest.

Some Adjustments For 2014For the second year, NEDA will be using the entire grounds, using the “Front Stabling” first for early entries, and overflowing with later entries into the “Back Stabling”. A word of advice here: “Get your entry in early. Premier stabling and warm up classes for the championships fill up quickly.” We will keep the basic layout of rings and vendors, and the VIP will remain in the covered pavilion between the CDI and Regionals rings.

VIP Works Like a Charm. The NEDA Hospitality Team will continue to offer hot breakfast and lunch, wine and cheese in the afternoon, plus Grab and Go packages.

We sell reserved tables ($600 for duration of show) and individual seating ($100), adding more tables in 2014 as we

were sold out last year. VIP will continue to offer two complimentary tickets for all who support the show by being a vendor, putting an ad in show program, sponsoring a class or other part of the show, hanging a banner, or providing gift certificates for class prizes.

Volunteer Perks Continue. NEDA will continue to provide free hotel (double occupancy), full breakfast and lunch for volunteers at the Garden Plaza Hotel in Kingston. Officials, due to continuing

renovations at the Garden Plaza, will be housed at the Diamond Mills in Saugerties.

Moving Show Office to “Lower Grounds”. In 2014 we will be bringing back the office trailer and park it where we parked it for several years, in the Lower Grounds near the VIP and the vendors. It will be the operating center for the Show Secretary, the computer system, scoring, volunteers and the posting of scores. We will be uploading scores every five minutes to the Internet, allowing competitors to access class standings during the show.

Awards and Show Manager in “Upper Grounds”. We envision handing out Awards in the permanent building closest to stabling, as we did last year. Awards will be able to spread out, separating Regionals from Open Show more conveniently. The Show Treasurer will be there, as will the Show Manager. Then, there is a lounge area for judges and volunteers.

Vendors will Remain near VIP. Moving the Show Office to the area near the vendors will increase traffic to the “Lower Grounds” to see the Show Secretary, to sign in as volunteers, or to check scores as they are posted. We will also have night security for that area, easing the work load for vendors who felt that had to pack up their wares each evening.

presiDent’s message

NEDA’s Year End Awards Program NEDA’s Year End Awards program is one of NEDA’s most robust and popular programs. Awards are made at every level in both amateur and open categories, and winners are announced through sixth place. We’ve been doing this for as long time. Champions get beautiful jackets from sponsor Mountain Horse, and we also give beautiful saddle pads from Dover, as well as a framed certificate. There is never a dearth of applicants so that year end award recognition really means something.

That said, in past years, when the award ceremony took place during the fall symposium dinner, very few of the award recipients actually came in person to pick up their awards. This meant that someone – a volunteer who had already put in countless hours assembling the awards – had to box them up and mail them out to the recipients, sometimes over 100 awards. This not only cost NEDA a lot of money, it also placed a severe burden on our year end award manager. And it was nothing fun at all, just grunt work.

We rely so heavily on our volunteers that we place a very high priority on making their work interesting, and recognizing their value to NEDA. Consequently we embarked two years ago on experiments to see if there were other ways of distributing the awards that would insure that most of them were picked up in person, reducing the number required to be mailed. The 2012 awards were presented on Saturday night of the spring show in Marshfield at a dinner held on the show rounds under a tent. It was a rollicking good time, with DJ and dancing, and afterward, less than a dozen awards remained to be mailed. The 2013 awards were presented at a stand alone dinner held in Cambridge MA in the late fall. It was a wonderful party, also with DJ Paul Eason and dancing. It also featured a terrific presentation by Dr. Jenny Susser about the mental attitudes and challenges that are holding us back from putting on our best performance under pressure. Sadly nearly 100 awards

remained to be mailed after that dinner. I ended up mailing them, and they filled every square inch of my Subaru, except the driver’s seat.

The NEDA board, after a lengthy discussion, decided to move our 2014 awards ceremony to the spring show in 2015 for the foreseeable future. Many of the award winners compete there, so even if they do not choose to come to the awards dinner, they can get their awards during the weekend. We could not ignore the burden placed on our manager of mailing a very large number of awards, even though we recognized that award winners would probably prefer to receive their awards closer in time to when the awards are won. We will still announce the winners in the fall and publicize them at that time. I wanted to devote my space in the Tip to explaining this decision to our members. We hope that those of you who are disappointed by this decision will understand how important it is to us to keep our volunteers happy.

Having a board level position and responsibility in NEDA has grown in recent years with the growth of programs and activities. At the same time, several board members who have been involved for many years felt that it was time to focus other activities in their life and open the way for new members and fresh ideas. As we build pour board, we are looking hard at all the things we do as an organization to be sure we have a work plan that continues to be doable by the people we ask to do them. If you are interested in stepping up your involvement with NEDA, we’d love to work with you to make a job description that works for you. We have several board positions open currently. If you are interested, please contact Alexandra Dane at [email protected] for details. NEDA really needs you. In the meantime, get out there and compete, so you’ll be coming to the podium next spring to pick up your award!

Have we an opportunity for YOU!Come as a team to work as the Membership Services Coordinator on the NEDA BOARD.

It’s a big job, involving promotions to our membership every month, and not everyone has that

amount of time to give, even to NEDA. BUT, share the work with a buddy or two, or three,

or four, and have a good time while doing it. We can supply the music! More information,

applause, contact ALEXANDRA DANE, Nominations Manager, at NOMINATIONS @ NEDA.ORG

As you know, the New England Dressage Association Fall Symposium will be held November 1 & 2, 2014 at Apple Knoll in Millis, MA. The Symposium will in part be facilitated by Ingrid Klimke presenting methods for training the classical way through fitness and gymnastic exercises. The cavaletti used in the symposium as a tool in the training of the dressage horse will be available through a silent auction during the symposium. Dr. Goesmeier will be lecturing and presenting practical applications of her topic with live demonstrations. Her utilization of chiropractic, acupuncture and herbal methods in addition to standard veterinary care generate wonderful discussions. These rarely available lectures are wildly popular and not to be missed.

There will also be DVD’s and books authored by Ingrid Klimke available for sale as well as a book signing session. We are also hopeful there will be a publication by Dr. Goesmeier available for sale.

NEDA has reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn, 319 Speen Street in Natick, MA. In order to access the block of rooms call reservations at 508-653-5000, you must request the NEDA or New England Dressage Association room rate. All reservations must be received on or before the cut-off date of Friday, October 3, 2014. The room rate has been reduced

to $109.00/night for single or double occupancy; a deposit of $109.00 per room will be applied at time of reservation, the remainder due will be charged upon check out. For those who would like to do some tourist things, the room rate will be offered 3 days prior and 3 days after the group rates dates of October 31-November 3, 2014.

The rider application and the auditor forms are now available on the website. Remember, auditor space will be limited so I urge you to get your applications in as soon as possible. For groups of 10 or more, contact Kate O’Connor at [email protected] for additional information. Rider selection is clearly outlined however if you have additional questions, please contact Kate.

It cannot be stressed enough how rare this opportunity is. Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Goesmeier do not come to this country often so take advantage of it. Keep checking the website: www.neda.org, the NEDA Education Facebook Page and NEDA publications for up to date info and details such as hotel information, auditor signup and criteria for rider selection. We will also be seeking volunteers to help with this symposium so please think about what contribution you may be able to give to help make this a successful event. See you there!!!

Connecticut Rider Angela Peavy Fills Individual Slot for WEG Normandyby holly JaCobson

Angela “Annie” Peavy, a senior at the Ethel Walker School will be representing the U.S. as an individual para-dressage rider at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, August 25-29.

Ranked fifth at the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian U.S. Selection Trials held at Gladstone in early June, she and her horse Lancelot Warrior, a 2002 Hanoverian gelding (Londonderry x Waroness) will be traveling as part of the U.S. Team, although self funded along with her trainer, Heather Blitz.

“At the moment everything is amazing, I’ve dreamed of this and now I’m living it,” Annie says. “Lance is very sweet and easy to be around, hasn’t met a treat he didn’t like and is always ready to work. We chose the freestyle music from Camelot because of his name.”

Classified as a Grade III rider, Peavy was born with cerebral palsy, which affects her strength and coordination of her extremities on her left side. “It makes riding challenging because it’s hard to ask for certain movements with my left side.” Peavy uses a rein loop on her left rein for better control. She’s allowed to salute with her head and carry a whip in her right hand.

Rewards have come from steady, diligent work. First, with trainer Ann Guptill of Fox Ledge Farm in East Haddam, CT who guided Peavy as she embarked on her para-dressage path, finding early success at Mystic Valley shows to earning the top prize at Lendon Gray’s 2012 Youth Dressage Festival.

Now with Heather Blitz at Cutler Farm Dressage, in neighboring Medfield, MA, whose focus on biomechanics has been key, Peavy has topped the Grade III divisions at CPEDI3* qualifiers in CA and FL.

“Heather always has something new for me to work on. She thinks of different ways to approach something if it’s difficult for me,” says Annie. She has used Mary Wanless for reinforcement. “The three times I’ve rode in a clinic with Mary, I walked away with more skills to use with my horses.”

Blitz also helped Annie find her two current horses, Lance and Ozzy Cooper, a 2006 Trakehner gelding (Hibiskus x Okka) through her contacts in Denmark, having lived there for four years.

“Annie’s training is focused on finding enough power in her body to keep her horses working correctly back to front and to step into the rein contact. Everyday we work to get Annie more and more plugged in and matching the forces of her horses’ movement,” says Blitz.

Parallel Bar is High

Grade III is a difficult division where tests require more collection and movements of counter canter, rein backs, turn on the haunches, plus trot and canter mediums. Unlike, Grades I and II, trainers are not allowed to ride a competitor’s horse during competition.

Fortunate to have two mounts, it still takes a lot of stamina to train and compete both over the multiple day CPEDI formats, in all kinds of weather.

“Going into the trials, Lance and I were doing very well together in training, so part of me expected Lance to come out ahead of Ozzy and he did. However, Ozzy always likes to shine too and he beat Lance two of three days. I was extremely proud of both of them, they both performed beautifully,” Annie says.

“I love dressage because I’m never finished, there is always more to learn. The most difficult thing is my pilates trainer, Cynthia Frelund, is very tough.”

Heather has a huge respect for the para-dressage riders in all grades.

“They have challenges unique to themselves for which there aren’t exactly manuals written to guide them. Finding appropriate horses is a much bigger challenge than it is for able bodied riders since the horse has to be able to handle the particular disability, PLUS be a talented enough athlete to be competitive.”

In Europe, the para riders are incredibly competitive, she points out. “Our program in the U.S. needs to move up to that level. Our riders are eager and interested in international success. We need riders, good horses, trainers and financial support to make that happen and I want to do what I can to promote all of that,” Heather says.

region 8 news

Region 8 Dressage FinalsI am assuming that you are all busy with summer showing, family vacations, and staying cool!

I will remind you again that I hope you are well on your way to attending the Regional Championships and then to the US Dressage Finals. As you know, the US Dressage Finals is for Open and Adult Amateur Champion and Reserve Champion from Regional Championship and riders who reach a certain score (information on the USDF Website). These riders will be invited to Lexington, KY to compete head to head with the other regional champions. I am hoping

for a big showing from Region 8 again. IMPORTANT note, please remember you will have to declare that you are willing to go to the ‘finals’ if invited. This declaration must be done by day before our Regional Championships. This is NEW procedure this year to give everyone even more chance to declare. The USDF website will have more information.

Convention is coming! The Convention is coming…I know I sound like a broken record but it is so exciting. SOOOOO….Remember to put Dec 3-7 on your calendar! There will be a Harbor cruise

on Friday night which will be awesome! I have already signed up! So when you look at registration, do that event by getting a barn table together.

Remember the Region 8 meeting on October 25 in Amherst, MA. It is for ALL USDF members. It you cannot make it, send me, region8dirusdf.org, your ideas for the convention or fun ideas for Region 8.

That is it for now!

See you on the Centerline…

Body Awareness

“Keeping riders focused on their own bodies before trying to correct the horse’s body is the first step. Biomechanics between the horse’s body and the rider’s body is the detailed information necessary for riders to affect their horses properly without causing the problems they’re trying to fix.” Blitz finds the method works equally well for para riders or able bodied riders. “The physics and body awareness I focus on works on all riders the same way. Kinda like gravity works on ALL apples,” says Heather.

“I’ve seen Annie’s body become much stronger and symmetrical over the year that I’ve been helping her with this. Consequently, all the horses she rides are improving vastly.”

As a trainer, Blitz thoroughly enjoys helping Annie with her goals. “She’s a super hard worker, doesn’t complain or feel sorry for herself and has made a tremendous amount of improvement in just one year. I look forward to many more years with her and also, seeing her compete in able bodied JR/Young Rider competitions coming up after WEG.”

Parent’s Perspective

“As a parent you never know what adventure you will get to be a part of,” says Annie’s mother Rebecca Reno. Reno has enjoyed the chance to meet so many other para athletes and their families.

“At Gladstone, I loved seeing the high level of athleticism mixed with so much love for the riders and their horses. This is fun sport that teaches a lot of grace

and humility along the way.” She says her family loves being involved at a time when the sport is really finding its feet in America and growing. Supporting Annie headed to Normandy is a personal family thrill but also helps lay the foundation for up and coming hopeful riders. “The U.S. Team is so incredibly lucky to have veteran riders who can lead the new strong, young women on the team,“ notes Reno.

After Normandy, Peavy plans to compete at Regional Championships for the Junior test. Next winter, she hopes to compete in Young Riders, as well as continuing para competitions with the goal of the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. She is a great example of the parallel meaning and spirit para athletes embody. Peavy seeks to be the best all around rider and horsewoman she can be.

This fabulous and very well attended clinic in Belchertown, MA was part of the “Education Outreach Program” held on May 31-June 1st. The clinician and host generously agreed to donate the auditor fees to the Ann Villani Scholarship Fund. Auditors and riders were also privileged to watch Cindy ride with some of the horses and make some very interesting observations, as well as positive changes.

their benefit and how to use them at home. She places the highest priority on the well-being of the horse (mental and physical), and has a very deep background in classical dressage. She’s a joy to work with!”

“I’d only add that Cindy is generous and attentive to all levels of horses and riders - one need not have a fancy dressage horse to be taken seriously. I came away from the weekend with positive resolve to work hard and keep improving!” exclaimed rider Jane Bryden.

Janet Moulding, who rode Mazy, “I was impressed with Cindy’s great knowledge and experience and her riding ability.”

Sheila Mclevedge said “After consulting with Cindy I bought my six year old Lusitano mare. We have worked together here in New England and I have gone to North Carolina to work with her as well over the past 24 years. We decided it would be a good idea if my first outing with Deja would be to see Cindy for advice in the schooling of my mare. I had only had her for three weeks! As always it turned out to be informative and very beneficial for the two of us! Cindy is an amazing teacher with so much knowledge given to you with the utmost patience and kindness.”

“I am thrilled with what we achieved in just two days with Cindy and inspired to do more. I hope I am fortunate enough to ride and learn with her again!” By Janet Laprade on Nemo (photo on left)

Special thanks to Suzanne Mente for helping to organize this clinic and to Bonnie’s neighbor for offering up an amazing home cooked lunch. If you would like to host a clinic at your farm, NEDA would be happy to help you get the word out. Please go to the website and look for the Outreach Program under the LEARN section.

Cindy Sydnor Clinic at Cado Farm by angela prenosil

Most of the riders rode over two days and some were kind enough to share their experience with us here at NEDA. Special thanks to Lisa Gebhardt of South Hadley, MA who took the photos!

Quote by Cado Farm owner, “Bonnie” (Marion) Miller – “At clinics, Cindy is always careful to attend to the auditors as well as the particular horse and rider, and, in her distinctly articulate way, to explain and contextualize the exercises so that everyone understands

Bonnie with her lovely mare, Dulce

“Cindy is exceptionally clear in her explanations, and demonstrates her points by riding, which is very helpful to both rider and auditors. I learned as much from her instruction to the lower level riders and horses as I did to the more advanced. She is patient, positive and encouraging. I am looking forward to working with her again.” By Heidi Dollard shown riding Reilly in photo below.

New England Breed Show Seriesby patty gUarino

NEDA is proud to offer many opportunities for Region 8 breeders to showcase their young horses with the New England Breed Show Series. There are more shows added this year throughout the Region 8 territory in which there is sure to be a convenient venue to accommodate more sport horse breeders than ever!

To support the newly added shows in the Series, NEDA is offering a Late Stallion Auction starting May 17. Between May 17 and 31, check out the stallion auction, where proven stallion breeding fees are sold at a reduced rate. The monies collected from the NEDA Stallion auction is generously donated by the breeders to the NEDA Breed Shows and goes out as awards to the winners. Please support this wonderful cause and check out the stallions available at www.nedastallionauction.org.

The importance of getting young horses into a show ring is a great experience for them. It builds their exposure to various situations and also adds to their value as sale horses. Scores at breed shows prove significant to potential buyers and breeder owners. People looking to buy horses will be confident in their

purchase when their future dressage partner has been off the farm, away from their herd, and has been comfortable in the show ring.

In order to qualify for NEDA and USDF year end regional awards, a horse has to have three separate scores from three separate judges. This means they need to participate in three shows. Many of the show venues this year have two separate shows and judges, so it is possible to obtain two separate scores by attending only one location.

NEDA is pleased to offer an opportunity for competitors to qualify for the NEDA $2100 Sport Horse Sweepstakes. By attending a show offering the Sweepstakes, competitors pay $50 to participate. Each show has its own Sweepstakes, and distributes cash prizes at that show. The more horses entered at each show, the bigger the prize money will be. By participating in the Sweepstakes, a horse is automatically entered in the Final Sweepstakes at NEDA Fall Festival, at no charge. There are some rules, such as the horse has to be a competitor at the Fall Festival to be considered to win. He also has to be present to win. A horse may enter the Sweepstakes at each of the Series

Come bring your young horse to show off in hand or under saddle group classes and materials. An excellent way to get them out for their first shows. Prize lists and contacts at www.neda.org

Shows, but only one Sweepstakes entry is necessary to qualify for the Final Sweepstakes at the NEDA Fall Festival. There is no opportunity to enter the Sweepstakes at the NEDA Fall Festival. A Sweepstakes prize of $2100 will be awarded at the Wine & Cheese party Thursday night of the NEDA Fall Festival. Thanks to Hof Mendenhol for sponsoring this party that is free and open to all.

This year, NEDA Fall Festival Breed Show and Series Championships will be celebrating their 10th year at the Fall Festival in Saugerties! The Breed Show will be held on Thursday and Friday. NEDA Sport Horse Committee is especially excited about all the prizes to be awarded! There will be more than $11,150 in prize money awarded to breeders and owners. The cash awards go to NEDA Breeders’ Futurity, Born in America and the NEDA Breeders Sweepstakes winners. Last year those winners received $5400, $2400 and $2100 respectively. Great prizes like saddle pads add to the excitement.

There are two new sponsored prizes added to the NEDA Fall Festival Breed Show. On Friday afternoon, there will be Handler Awards. The traditional Breed Show Amateur Handler class will be divided into two divisions this year: Class 63A for

Amateur and Junior/Young Rider Handlers and 63B for Open Handlers. The prizes are Ovation helmets that will be presented to each winner. Many thanks to Ten Brock Farm for sponsoring these classes and awards! The second prizes are cash awards for the Three year old Prospect Award. This is for three year old horses which enter into the Age Class on Thursday and the Material Class on Friday. The highest average score (both fillies and colts) will be awarded $200 Champion and $300 Reserve Champion prizes.

The new, safer venue at the Fall Festival makes it fun to show inexperienced horses. The positive changes include stabling closer to the show ring. Stabling allows horses to return to their stalls between showing and award ceremonies. There is a separate warm up ring, and the route to get there is short and quiet. The breed show takes center stage at Saugerties at the ring adjacent to the food pavilion. Since the Breed Show is centrally located, the atmosphere is exciting for spectators and offers increased exposure for breeders and owners. Thursday night will include the Wine and Cheese party which accompanies the Award Ceremonies, including the Sweepstakes! It is a great way to spend an evening!
