2 Corinthians 5:8 “We areconfident, I say, and willingrather to be absent from thebody and to be present withthe Lord.”
The passage above indi-cates that Paul was not wondering about where he was going whenhe died. The guy who called himself the “chief of sinners” knew thatChrist had forgiven him and given him eternal life. He knew thatwhen he exited his body, he would, “depart, and to be with Christ;which is far better.” (Philippians 1:23)
He did not say, “I hope I make it. After all, no one can really besure.” He didnʼt say, “after I spend so many hundreds or thousandsof years in some ethereal prison paying for my sins, then I will goto be with Christ, maybe.” He did not say, “Who knows where I willbe when I die. Maybe I will stay in the grave in some sort of soulsleep.”
No, he knew when he exited this world he would go to be withthe Savior. He had the same confidence as the thief on the crosswhen Jesus told him, “Verily, (truly, positively, definitely, undoubt-edly, unquestionably), I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with mein paradise.” (Luke 23:43)Do you have that same confidence? You can, you know. You donot have to be Paul to have it. We would love to share how withyou.

Films contribute to cherished holiday traditions and inspire great gifts(MS)
Tradition plays a pivotal role dur-ing the holiday season. While eachfamily has its own unique holiday tra-ditions, certain traditions areembraced and shared by families farand wide.
The tradition of watching holidayfilms together as a family is one cus-tom that has endured for genera-tions. Grandparents may have theirfavorite films, while moms and dadsno doubt have their own must-seeholiday movies as well. And no holi-day film session is complete withoutincluding at least one movie that cel-ebrates the magical impact that thistime of year can have on youngsters. This year, holiday shoppers caneven draw some gift-giving inspira-tion from some classic holiday filmsthat appeal to family members of allages.
“The Polar Express” (2004)Children love this tale of a young
boy who lives out many kidsʼ holidayfantasies by embarking on a magi-cal, unpredictable journey to theNorth Pole. Along the way, the boybecomes a true believer in the spiritof Christmas when he picks up aloose sleigh bell that falls off ofSantaʼs sleigh. Santa ultimatelyentrusts the bell to the boy, referringto the bell as “the first gift ofChristmas.”
Parents who want to make thetradition of watching holiday filmstogether with their children evenmore special for kids can give theFirst Gift of Christmas Sleigh BellGift Set (https://www.etsy.
com/shop/LilyDeal), providing theiryoungsters with the same sense ofmagic and wonderment the boy feelswhen Santa gives him the sleigh bellin the film. The set includes a largesleigh bell, a red- and snow white-striped gift box, forest green ribbon, and large bow. A leather strap con-nected to each bell allows kids tohang the bell to include as part oftheir home holiday decor, or kids cancarry the bell with them during theholiday season and show it off tofriends and family alike. Each bellcomes in a velvet gift bag, makingthe set an ideal memento for shop-pers who want to give kids some-thing they can unwrap and enjoyeach Christmas for years to come. Inaddition, each bell comes with aCertificate of Authenticity that issigned by Santa and lists the nameof the elf who inspected the bell, thereindeer name and the location ofthe bell on the reindeerʼs harness.
Shoppers looking for stockingstuffers for young fans of the film canopt for the Polar Express Round TripTrain Ticket. At 8” by 3”, the ticket fitseasily into standard Christmas stock-ings and can be customized to say“BELIEVE” or any word up to eightletters.“National Lampoonʼs ChristmasVacation” (1989)
A holiday favorite among aslightly older crowd, “NationalLampoonʼs Christmas Vacation” con-tinues the tale of lovable family manClark Griswold (Chevy Chase). Clarkis determined to provide a traditionalfamily Christmas for his wife, chil-dren and their large extended family, only to have his dream holidayderailed by a stingy boss. Whenshopping for gifts for fans of this holi-day classic, shoppers can scour anarray of homemade items onEtsy.com, from coffee mugs to T-shirts to home furnishings and more, celebrating Clark Griswold and allthe mayhem his family hilariouslyendures en route to enjoying a merryChristmas together.“Itʼs a Wonderful Life” (1946)
Grandparents are no doubt veryfamiliar with this beloved holidayclassic, which tells the tale of frus-trated businessman George Bailey(Jimmy Stewart). Contemplating sui-cide on Christmas Eve, George issaved when his guardian angel,
Clarence (Henry Travers), intervenesand shows him what life would havebeen like for Georgeʼs loved oneshad he never been born. Holidayshoppers looking for something spe-cial for a parent or grandparent wholoves the story of George Bailey canperuse Etsy.com to find a host of
items and replicas that recall someof the fi lmʼs most memorablescenes.
This year, shoppers can makethe tradition of watching holiday filmstogether as a family even more spe-cial by incorporating some belovedholiday movies into their gift-giving.

(StatePoint) Whether one aspires to culinary greatness or
prefers whipping up cozy family meals, all cooksappreciate quality kitchen equipment. Here aresome ways you can beef up your kitchen in time toprepare large holiday feasts, and some ideas tohelp you shop for the chefs and foodies in yourlife.
Cutting BoardsThe right cutting board should last for
decades, neither warping nor splitting. It shouldalso not dull oneʼs knives. Seek out a cuttingboard that is stable on your countertop and willrespond well to your particular set of knives.Maintain wooden cutting boards by regularly oilingthem in order to reduce their porousness.
For meats, look for high-quality plastic cuttingboards, which are easy to sanitize. Just be sure totoss these cutting boards after they are worn out,as they are more prone to harbor bacteria afterwear and tear.
High-Quality CookwareGo-to staples need to be high-quality and
highly-functional. A fry pan, for instance, shouldheat evenly, be very responsive to temperature, and ideally be ergonomic.
While great cookware such as this usuallycomes with a premium price tag, you can usuallycapitalize on good deals at this time of year. Forexample, Hammer Stahl, an American madekitchenware brand known for quality and perform-ance, is currently offering a two-piece set of stain-less steel multi-clad fry pans (8.5-inch and 10.5-inch) with a lifetime warranty at half the regularprice, giving holiday shoppers an opportunity toaffordably stock up kitchens with premier go-topans. Great for frying, sautéing, searing andbrowning, their flat bottoms and curved sides
make tossing and flipping food easy.Immersion Blender
Space-saving, versatile and affordable, animmersion blender is perfect for any cook, howev-er many people find their kitchens without one.Perfect for creating smooth purees, soups, andpesto, they also require less clean-up than full-sizeblenders or food processors, something to keep inmind when prepping a complicated holiday feast,or looking to simplify weeknight dinners.
Professional-Quality CutleryGood knives are the foundation of a well-
equipped kitchen. No other tool will improve thejoy of cooking quite like a good chefʼs knife. A dull, awkward knife is not only a hassle to use, but dan-gerous too.
Both advanced chefs and beginner cooks willbenefit from top-quality high-carbon, stainlesssteel knives, such as the new Hammer Stahl 6-inch chef knife and the 5.5-inch Santoku knife.Made in the tradition of the great German knifemakers, the handles are ergonomically designedwith a comfortable grip to reduce fatigue. AllHammer Stahl knives are heirloom quality andguaranteed for life. For more information, visit
hammerstahl.com/holidaygiftguide.“These are not intimidating knives. A shorter
blade gives you more control over the knife, and isexcellent for most basic tasks like slicing vegeta-bles or chopping fresh herbs,” said Bobby Griggs, vice president, Hammer Stahl.
This holiday season, treat yourself and lovedones to top-quality kitchen gear that can pave theway to better cooking.

Did You Know?Christmas songs provide the soundtrack for holiday magic. Such songs evoke strongfeelings in people, and various songs have become staples at holiday celebrations. Someinteresting facts and history surround many popular Christmas songs. “White Christmas,”for example, is the best-selling Christmas song of all time. However, “Silent Night” is themost recorded Christmas song in history, says TIME. “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” isconsidered a jolly song, but songwriter James Gillespie was unemployed and had justlost his brother prior to writing the song. Still, he was able to look past his grief to pen theclassic. Many are unaware that “Jingle Bells” originally was supposed to be aThanksgiving song. While many beloved Christmas songs have been around fordecades, one artist managed to tap into the success of classic Christmas music. MariahCareyʼs “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is a popular modern-day Christmas song.
(Family Features) Preparing the perfect ham for all of
your holiday guests to share can feel likea lot of pressure, but complementing themain dish with sides, snacks anddesserts can help take a bite out of thatoverwhelming feeling.
To help fill out your dinner table thisholiday season, start with a crowd-pleas-ing appetizer like Bacon and CheddarRanch Dip that can ease everyone intothe meal. Then, just as dinnerʼs graspwears away, treat your guests to WhiteChocolate Peppermint Popcorn Bark as adelightful holiday sendoff.
To make sure the main course thisholiday season – a yummy, juicy ham – iscooked and prepared to perfection, thereare some simple steps to follow.
Thaw It—While ham can be cookedwithout thawing, for best results the firststep to a tasty ham is properly thawing itin either the refrigerator or cold water.Never thaw a ham on the counter, as it
can become subject to bacterial growthwhen the outside warms but the insideremains frozen. Remember: The largerthe ham, the longer it needs to thawbefore cooking.
Bake It—Once the ham is properlythawed, start by heating your oven to 325F and lining a roasting pan with alu-minum foil. Youʼll want to cook the hamlow and slow to avoid drying it out, andlining the pan helps limit the mess. As itbakes, donʼt forget to flip it over abouthalfway through the process.
Check It—When the ham gets closeto being done cooking, take the saferoute and check its temperature. TheUSDA recommends bringing pork to 145F to help ensure itʼs cooked thoroughly.
Finish It—After pulling the ham fromthe oven, let it rest 15 minutes beforeslicing. Because the ham will continuebaking outside the oven for a short peri-od, allowing it to rest holds in those deli-cious juices. If youʼre looking for a differ-ent way to please your guestsʼ palates, try glazing it with different mixtures thatcould include anything from brown sugarto fruit juices.

(StatePoint) Will you be shopping for any hunters or out-
door enthusiasts this holiday season? Thoughtful, useful gifts will be well-appreciated.
“When it comes to hunters, think lightweightand packable,” says Louis Chalfant, director ofproduct development at Smithʼs ConsumerProducts.
Here are a few ideas to consider:Sharpen their Game—Those who hunt, fish
and go on outdoor expeditions know just howimportant it is to keep tools sharp. You can honegamesmanship with essential gear like a knifesharpener.
For instance, a versatile tool like the Jiffy-ProHandheld Sharpener is quick, safe and easy touse whether one is in the field, back at camp, or athome. It functions both to set the edge on a dull ordamaged blade and to achieve razor sharpness.Plus, the scissors sharpening slot is large enoughto accommodate game shears as well.
Lightweight enough to be a stocking stuffer, consider, the 4” Diamond Combination BenchStone, which features coarse and fine grit sharp-ening surfaces. Its innovative design speedssharpening by collecting and holding the metal fil-ings which ordinarily build up during use. Eachstone has a groove for fish hooks or pointed tools, and when one is finished sharpening; he or she
can store the stones in the handle for safekeeping. These tools are available at various sporting
goods, outdoors and hardware retail stores, aswell as online at SmithsProducts.com.
Get them Prepared—Those whose adven-tures take them off the beaten path need certainlightweight, compact tools to be prepared for avariety of situations. A fire starter is a must-havefor any avid outdoorsman, hunter or backpacker.
Other handy items to consider for gifts are ahigh-quality first aid kit with all the essentials, amultifunctional pocket knife or even an IOU prom-ising to cover the cost of this seasonsʼ hunting andfishing licenses.
With some careful consideration, you canmake the holidays special for the hunters and out-door enthusiasts in your life.

Baking cookies is a holiday traditionfor many families. Come the holiday sea-son, many homes are filled with the invit-ing scents of vanilla, cinnamon and melt-ing chocolate.
Baking cookies can be a socialoccasion in which family members andfriends gather to create recipes passeddown through generations. Or bakingcan be a solitary venture in which cook-ies are prepared and packaged as holi-day gifts. Either way, people who bakeduring the holiday season understandthat making Christmas cookies can be atime-consuming, yet rewarding, process.
This year, holiday bakers canembrace a number of time-saving tipsand tricks to reduce the amount of timethey spend in the kitchen and possiblyeven improve on existing recipes.
• Use a cookie mix. Who says youhave to toil and make cookies fromscratch? Itʼs the thought that counts, andany number of creative recipes canbegin by utilizing a premade baking mix. These mixes already have most of thedry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking soda, baking pow-der, salt, and sugar. All you have to do isadd the wet ingredients and any extra
embellishments to make the mix yourown. If mixes are too much work, pur-chase refrigerated or frozen cookiedough. Include your own add-ins, suchas nuts, white chocolate chips, bits ofdried fruit, or crumbled candy canes, togive the premade dough a unique flavor.
• Prepare ahead. Many cookiedough recipes can be made and storedfor later use. In fact, refrigerating a log ofcookie dough can make it easier to cutor handle later on. Spread out the bulk ofyour baking over two days and youmight feel less taxed.
• Try a no-bake recipe. Creative
culinary experts continually reveal theirclever tricks, and many of these includeno-bake versions of favorite desserts. No bake cookies come together in amatter of minutes, but still employ a hostof delicious ingredients. Recipes fre-quently feature similar ingredients to tra-ditional cookies, but rely on chocolate, honey or peanut butter as the settingagent to keep them together. Bakersmay also like not having to turn on theirovens.
Cookies may be holiday traditions, but there are ways to reduce the amountof time required of holiday baking.

The time between Thanksgiving andNew Yearʼs Day marks one of the busiestperiods of the year for long-distance trav-el. The United States Department ofTransportation says that comeThanksgiving, the number of long-dis-tance trips (50+ miles away) increasesby 54 percent, and around Christmasthat number rises by 23 percent over theremainder of the year. Those travelersultimately need a place to rest theirheads, and many stay with family andfriends.
Entertaining during the holiday sea-son involves accounting for guestsʼ com-fort, and that often means hosts must puttheir visitorsʼ needs over their own.Although some sacrifices need to bemade, there is a way to find a happycompromise that can help the holidaysgo smoothly and happily. Consider theseways to help guests feel welcomewhether they stay for a few hours or afew days.
1. Cater to specific dietary needs.
One of the ways to treat guests kindly isby being aware of any special dietaryneeds they may have when it comes topreparing holiday meals or other foodsduring their visits. Some guests mayrequire low-sodium diets, while othersmay be monitoring their blood-sugar lev-els and must dine accordingly.Vegetarians limit the foods they eat, while others may avoid foods based onreligious preferences. Offer a variety offoods and try to cater to guestsʼ needs asmuch as possible. When in doubt, con-sult with the guest so he or she feels wel-come and does not go hungry.
2. Make sleeping spaces as privateas possible. Not everyone has a sepa-rate guest room for overnight stays, buttry to make sleeping areas as private asyou can when visitors spend the night.Use privacy screens or set guests up in afamily room thatʼs away from the centerof activity. Hosts may want to give uptheir own rooms for the comfort ofguests.
3. Offer storage space. One way tomake guests feel comfortable is to givethem their own storage space. This caninclude space in a closet, a couple ofdrawers to stow their belongings, orhangers in the entryway for coats andother winter attire. Not only will this keepthings more organized, it can provideguests with comfort.
4. Include guests when preparing forentertaining. Many guests like to feelinvolved, and by including them in mealpreparation, decorating or shopping, youcan help them feel included and appreci-ated.
5. Keep snacks and other creaturecomforts readily accessible. Guests mayfeel sheepish scavenging through cabi-nets or drawers looking for items. Make
things easy to find by leaving items outon counters or indicating where itemscan be found. For example, if you know aguest enjoys an evening cup of tea andsome cookies, leave out the cookies, teabags and kettle so that he or she canindulge when the urge comes.
Guests are a large part of the holi-day season. Help them feel comfortablewhenever they visit your home.

TIP-OFF SHOPPING GUIDE • HILLSDALE • (517) 437-7351 2016 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 9 November 21, 2016 • Page 17
Holiday shopping season typically begins theday after Thanksgiving and extends all the way toChristmas Eve. While thatʼs a considerable amountof time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone ontheir shopping list, many people will still find them-selves putting holiday shopping off until the lastminute.
In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping iseasier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who canship products overnight, men and women who delaytheir holiday shopping have more options at theirdisposal than they did before the arrival of theInternet. And unlike the days of yore when the bestdeals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, someshoppers find that competition between online retail-ers and traditional brick-and-mortar stores is sogreat that deals can be found regardless of whenthey begin shopping. But while waiting until the lastminute to begin holiday shopping may not be asrisky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit bysticking to certain strategies so they can find theperfect gifts without breaking the bank.
• Stay within your budget. Even last-minuteshoppers have holiday shopping budgets. But it canbe harder for last-minute shoppers to stick to theirbudgets because they have less time to comparisonshop and hunt for deals. As the holiday shoppingseason winds down, resist the temptation to go overbudget. If a gift you had in mind is available butmore than you can spend, look for something else.
Overspending on holiday shopping in December is arecipe for debt in January, and no shopper wants tobegin the new year weighed down by consumerdebt.
• Shop local. National chains and big box retail-ers are renowned for rolling out great deals duringthe holiday season, but such stores may have verylimited or unimpressive inventory left by the timelast-minute shoppers begin shopping. Local retailersare often incapable of slashing prices as significantlyas their larger competitors, and that may mean theyhave more extensive inventories available through-out the holiday shopping season. In addition, shop-pers who stick with local retailers wonʼt have to payshipping costs to ensure items arrive on time.
• Shop during off-peak hours. Shopping dur-ing off-peak hours can help last-minute shoppersmake efficient use of the limited time they have tobuy gifts for their loved ones. Visit stores early in themorning or late at night, or schedule a midweekafternoon shopping trip so you arenʼt spending whatlittle time you have left waiting on lines or hunting forparking.
• Give something less traditional. Holiday giftsneed not come from stores. Rather than spendingtheir time shopping for gifts for loved ones whoseemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can givethe gift of a donation in their loved oneʼs name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something moretangible can create a homemade gift thatʼs both
unique and heartfelt. Ifyour DIY skills are lack-ing, give a loved one thegift of a night out on thetown at your expense.
Shoppers who waituntil the end of the holi-day shopping season tobegin their searches forholiday gifts can still findgreat gifts without goingbroke.

Every holiday shopper ends up withat least one loved one on their shoppinglist who they canʼt seem to find anythingfor. Some people seem to have it all, while others may be less than forthcom-ing with regard to items they may needor want.
Many seniors tend to fall into the lat-ter category. Shopping for holiday giftsfor seniors can be difficult if shoppersdonʼt know what seniors want. But thefollowing are a handful of gift ideas thatmight make this holiday season thatmuch more special for seniors.
Books—A 2015 survey from thePew Research Center found that 69 per-cent of adults age 65 and over acknowl-edged reading at least one book in theprevious 12 months. That makes booksa good bet for shoppers who donʼt knowwhat to get their 65-and-over loved ones
this holiday season. But shoppers mightwant to opt for more traditional printbooks rather than e-books, as the surveyfound that only 15 percent of readersage 65 and over had read an e-book inthe previous 12 months.
Gym membership—According tothe Office of Disease Prevention andHealth Promotion, more than 80 percentof adults do not meet the guidelines foraerobic and muscle-strengthening activi-ties. That can be especially troubling forseniors, who are at greater risk forosteoporosis, a medical condition inwhich age-related tissue loss contributesto brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activitieslike weight training, can help combatosteoporosis. Family members stuck onwhat to get aging loved ones may wantto consider gifting a membership to a
local gym. Many gyms offer heavily dis-counted memberships to seniors, andsuch gyms may even offer senior fitnessclasses at no additional cost.
Travel gifts—Many retirees love totravel, but not every senior has themeans to take off for parts unknown. Asurvey found that 25 percent of retireesadmitted they wished they would have
saved more for retirement travel. Holidayshoppers can light up seniorsʼ smiles bygifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to anelderly loved one so he or she can get afree or discounted flight. If thatʼs not apossibility, some new luggage or a giftcard that can be redeemed at 70,000hotels across the globe.

Christmas trees are symbols of theholiday season and the spirit of givingthat the season champions. Choosingand decorating a Christmas tree is atradition for many families, and depend-ing on the trees they choose, familiesmay have some work to do to keep theirtrees glowing all season long.
Artificial Christmas trees require lit-tle, if any, maintenance. But liveChristmas trees, which some peoplefeel are more authentic and welcomingthan their artificial counterparts, requiredaily maintenance. In addition to sup-plying the tree with water at least once
per day, live Christmas tree owners cantake these steps to prolong the life oftheir trees.
• Protect the tree on the wayhome. Your tree might be vulnerable todamage as you transport it from thefarm to your living room. Unwrappedtrees placed atop vehicles can be driedout by the wind. Prevent wind damageby wrapping the tree if you plan to placeit atop your vehicle. If possible, lay thetree in the bed of a pickup truck andclose the cover over the bed. If youdonʼt have access to a pickup truck butcan use a minivan or SUV to transport
your tree, see if the tree fits inside yourvehicle. If it doesnʼt, wrap it tightly in ablanket or another form of cover, mak-ing sure the cover wonʼt blow off in thewind when you hit the open road.
• Have the tree cut before youtake it off the lot. If you typically pur-chase your tree from a florist or tree lotinstead of a tree farm, then rememberto ask the seller to recut the stem of thetree before you take it home. Tree farmtrees are freshly cut, but trees soldaway from the farm might have beenchopped down weeks before they areultimately sold. During the interval
between being cut down and sold, treesʼ vascular systems can clog andprevent the tree from getting the water itneeds to survive the season. A fresh cutof the stem unclogs the system andensures the tree will be able to con-sume water.
• Avoid placing the tree nearheaters or drafty windows. Many peo-ple know that placing a live tree near apotentially hot heating vent poses a firehazard. But doing so also can dry outthe tree, decreasing the chances it willmake it through the season. Placing thetree near drafty windows also can dry
out the tree, so try to finda spot in your home with aconsistent temperature.
• Water the treeoften. Christmas treesneed lots of water to makeit through the season. Youmay notice the water inthe tree stand disappearsquickly when you firstbring the tree home.Thatʼs because freshly cuttrees will consume morewater than trees that werecut several weeks ago. Asthe season goes on andthe treeʼs vascular systembegins to clog, you mightnot need to water the treeas much as you did whenyou first brought it home. But check the treeʼs waterstand twice per day whenyou first bring it home, refil l ing the stand withwater whenever neces-sary.
A few tricks of thetrade can help holiday cel-ebrants maintain lush,awe-inspiring Christmastrees throughout the holi-day season.
