As part of The Madras Week Celebrations, Kalaa Manjari After School Activity Center and Bambaram Toy Library conducted a Map-Making Workshop titled ‘MAP UR WAY ‘ for the kids on Aug. 20, 2011.

The kids were ex-plained the brief his-tory of maps and car-tography, its various uses and how to make a simple map of one’s neighborhood with the help of power point presenta-tion.

After the workshop, the kids were taken for a walk in the neighborhood and based on their observations, kids as a group, created their own maps of the area with the various landmarks.

Kids above 10 years of age partici-pated and benefited from the

workshop. Being the first workshop on map making conducted in Chennai, kids enjoyed the interactive workshop and enthusiastically participated in

the contest.

The people behind this unique workshop plan to host and conduct such workshops in future too.

In the days of social networking, an interesting topic came up for the inter-school debate hosted by Landmark at Citi Center on Aug. 26, 2011.

The students threw up an intense debate on ‘Do we learn more outside classrooms?’

A team argued that “One learns throughout life…” but the opposotion came up with a new definition for the word ‘classroom’ and carried on the argu-ment to a fresh level.

The team from P.S. Senior Secon-dary School, Mylapore, represented by Manasvini Mukund and Barath Balaji was elected the best. The three best speakers were Kaustub N

from PSBB KK Nagar, Abhinav L from Don Bosco Egmore and

Sushmita Mohan from PSBB Senior Secondary School.

Presenting the city's heritage It was Madras and Chennai, that was heard everywhere last week. For the past few years now, people from various walks of life have be-gun to celebrate the city of Chen-nai. August 22 is celebrated as Ma-dras Day or Chennai Dinam in our own language.

There are reasons to celebrate the city's history, heritage and culture. Chennai is home to many firsts in India and the story of how the city came up to be what it is today is interesting. There are well-known landmarks and monuments in Chennai as in other cities around the world. But the lesser known places are the ones that fascinate every person who observes their city keenly.

The multimedia presentation contest for schoolchildren, hosted every year during the Madras Week aims at making the children ex-plore the hidden histories of Chennai.

This year the contest was held on Aug. 23 at Srinivasa Sastri Hall in Mylapore which has a history of its own spanning to a century.

Teams of three from 23 city

schools participated. From old tem-ples, churches in the city to post offices that exist for more than 75 years and a completely hidden

pillar with history written over on it were the subjects the students chose to present on that day. Their research was on for a month before the con-test.

The team from DAV Girls' Senior Sec. School, Gopalapuram walked away with the Rolling Trophy instituted by L & T, a long time supporter of the event. Their project was on Pallikaranai Marsh.

Even in the well-known places, there are surprises if you look into them with an eye for detail. The team from PSBB Nungambakkam proved it with their presentation on the Madras High Court. They received the second prize for their effort.

Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram took up St. Andrew's Kirk, went around and inside and their presentation had a lot of pictures that fetched them the third prize.

If your school wants to start re-searching for the contest for the next year, they need to mark the Tuesday that falls within the Madras Week. The online place to check is http://themadrasday.in

It was a lot of learning the fun way at the Madras Quiz in Tamil hosted ex-clusively for the students studying

through Tamil medium in schools.

Some easy and throw-away, some trivial, some historical and some edu-cative, the questions ranged from movies to sports to personalities and landmarks.

Of the twenty seven teams partici-pated, six teams made it to the top

and played in the finals.

The team from Rani Meyyammai Girls' school won the rolling trophy

for their school and individual silver trophies for themselves.

Runners up were the team from an-other girls' school, St. Raphael's and Raja Muthiah's boys came as third in the contest.

Good old Madras in PSBB, K K Nagar Exhibitions, contests and presenta-tions - all about Madras were part of the Madras Week celebra-tions at PSBB school in K K Nagar.

The inaugura-tion of the exhi-bitions of pho-tos, drawings, coins, books and antiques was also the day for distribu-tion of prizes for various contest-winners. Kolams and quizzing were among the con-tests children took part in.

When the dean of PSBB schools, Mrs. YGP asked the students to sing

happy birthday to Madras, the children took it up to sing in Sanskrit. The heri-tage well-preserved and pre-sented aptly for the day.

The student volunteers who helped in setting up the exhibitions were curious to explore the story of the exhibits.

A group of children from Rani Meyyammai Girls Hr. Sec. School, R.A.Puram went on a trip to north Madras as part of the exchange event organised for the Madras Week. Ashok Leyland offered their Fun Bus for the trip and the Women’s wing of Avvai Kalai Kazhagam, Royapuram guided the kids in the old parts of Chennai.
