By Nandita Krishna M Student Reporter If Mr. U V Krishna Mohan Rao, Dr. Umadevi Rao and their daughter Dr. U V Nivedita have named their home ‘Viswa Syamalam’. it has a reason.

Their residence in Madipakkam, a neighbourhood located off Velachery Main Road is completely an eco-friendly home otherwise called a Green home.

Viswa Syamalam consumes the lowest energy loads and least carbon footprint, say the residents of this home. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has rated ‘Viswa Syamalam’ as India’s first platinum green home. Generally IGBC encourages houses that adopt recycling and conservative methods. And the family believes that eco-friendly home is ethical requirement of any responsible citizen.

Some of the main features of this green home iclude rain water harvesting, use of solar energy for major energy requirements and a very good cross ventilation.

Since the rain water is managed very well, there is no municipal water connection to this home. Solar energy is used for heating water, cooking and taking advantage of natural light is so good that electric lights are not needed during the day time in any part of the building, sunrise to

sunset.

There is also a unique ‘sunpipe’ used to bring in sunlight into the home without heat and using the principle of total internal reflection. And during the night time, mercury-free LED lights are used.

Solar power is used for lighting. Also there is excellent ventilation (cross ventilation) all through the day that there is no need of turning on the air conditioners, as the temperature generally remains lesser by 4 to 5 degres C compared to conventional homes in the same

locality.

The waste water from the bathroom is used for the kitchen garden, by the method of root zone filtration.

Even in the construction of Viswa Syamalam, only eco-friendly materials were used, say the Raos.

The good news is that owners of Viswa Syamalam confirm that to practice eco-friendly lifestyle and building a green home does not cost anything extra. On the other hand, it saves money and the environment too.

India’s first Platinum rated Green Home: Viswa Syamalam in Madipakkam

1. Be prepared . Don't have any last - minute preparations.

2. Work on the areas where you are weak.

3. Also remember that your entire future does not hinge on this exam.

4. Don't let fears about your performance overwhelm you.

5. Also don't devote excessive amount of time for studying just for the purpose for your grades.

It will not help you in anyway.

6. Cramming usually involves memorising study material. You will have to avoid cramming before the exam as it will pressurise your ability to recall memorized information.

7. Taking time to understand the course material will improve your chances of being able to use what you’ve learned when you need it most.

8. If you feel you are stressed, take a break and resume with your studies after a while.

9. Always stick with your routine , don't try changing your sleeping patterns or diet during your preparation for examinations as it will take you out of your comfort zone. This will have a great impact on your physical as well as mental health.

10. Summarise the important concepts what you have learnt in the morning. This will help you score good grades in an examination.
