Accelerate Your Journey toVirtualization and the Private CloudAs enterprises seek ways to become more agile and responsive to their

customer’s needs, while keeping costs low and becoming more sustainable,

they are increasingly turning to virtualization technology and private cloud

environments that let enterprises run multiple virtual machines on a single physical

machine and to share resources of that one physical computer across multiple

environments. By migrating from physical to virtual machines, organizations

are improving server utilization, freeing up available space within the data center,

and reducing energy consumption. This helps contribute to an optimized

data center environment that:

• Increases business agility and responsiveness to changing priorities• Enables IT to operate as a service• Lowers energy usage• Reduces the complexity of the architecture• Increases flexibility and scalability for future growth and migration

A consortium, that includes VMware, Cisco, and EMC and known as the Virtual

Computing Environment (VCE) Coalition, has developed Vblock™ Infrastructure

Packages that offer customers and partners pre-engineered, tested, and validated

solutions. These solutions integrate virtualization, networking, compute, storage,

security, and management technologies as a way to accelerate organizations’

migration to virtualization and private clouds.

Packaged as pre-configured solutions, there are multiple standard Vblock™

configurations engineered and appropriately sized for unique business

requirements with the flexibility to scale over time.

As with any logical architecture design, true optimization relies on

a Unified Physical InfrastructureSM (UPI)-based approach in order to successfully

address the challenges around power, cooling, space utilization, transport speed,

and overall performance. This helps to mitigate risks associated with the adoption

of new technology and lower costs, while increasing agility and sustainability

of the infrastructure.

Panduit’s Unified PhysicalInfrastructure (UPI): a Guiding Vision

A unified approach to physical and logical systems architecture is imperativefor solutions to fully address the need for availability, agility, integration, andsecurity. Panduit has developed theindustry’s most comprehensive and holistic approach to a Unified PhysicalInfrastructure and can help enterprisesalign, converge, and optimize criticalsystems – communication, computing, control, power, and security – to build a smarter, unified business foundation.

Mitigate Risk – Efficient physicalinfrastructure design, deployment, and management enables seamless integration across the physical and logical infrastructure to reduce riskswhich can occur throughout core systems.

Lower Cost – Panduit physicalinfrastructure solutions drive financialadvantages by helping to lower energyand occupancy costs, enhance spacesavings, and reduce downtime to securea competitive advantage.

Increase Agility – A high level of integration within the physical infrastructure and the accompanying logical infrastructure enables flexibilityand improved business agility.

Enhance Sustainability – UPI basedsolution offerings enable organizations to meet sustainability goals by drivingresource and energy efficienciesacross the physical infrastructure.

Optimized for Power, Cooling, Space,Speed and PerformanceBy working closely with the VCE Coalition, Panduit designed its Pre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™ to balance scalability, power and thermal characteristics. This approach ensures that the physical infrastructure for Vblock™

deployments are optimized for power, cooling, space, speed, and performance, lowering infrastructure risks and costs while increasing agility and sustainability.

ScalabilityPanduit Pre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™ are designed to simplifygrowth from minimum to maximum capacity without affecting the currently installedequipment, thus supporting business growth and agility across the entire offering.

Panduit Pre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™ also accommodate migration from 10G to 40G or 100G Ethernet with minimum investment and down time.

Making changes to a Vblock™ deployment is as easy as adding the appropriatePanduit pre-engineered upgrade package.

Optimized Power and Thermal ManagementBalanced equipment configurations ensure even power usage within an individualcabinet and across multiple cabinets minimizing hot spots that can impact systemperformance and reliability. Panduit Power Outlet Units (POUs) are available separatelyto provide optimal capacity and redundancy across all Vblock™ configurations. Panduit Pre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™ conserve energy by establishing front-to-back airflow patterns and synergistic physical layouts to maximize power and thermal efficiencies.

The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics by Panduit Labs

provides optimum cabinet designs and energy efficiency.

Panduit Pre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™ offer high-density, optimum heat load data center designs for greater

thermal efficiencies.

• Perforated cabinet doors and cabinet frame designs that maximize airflow area

• Vertical air dams and sealing features that minimize leaks and separate cool andhot air streams

• Thermal load distributions within cabinets that maximize the availability of cooling airflow

When combined with additional Panduit passive, optimized thermal management solutions, PanduitPre-Configured Physical Infrastructures for Vblock™

can provide substantial reductions in the energy

costs of a typical data center.
