Who is VCE?

VCE, formed by Cisco and EMC with investments from VMware and Intel,

accelerates the adoption of converged infrastructure and cloud-based computing

models to deliver extraordinary efficiency and business agility. VCE solutions are

available through an extensive partner network, and cover horizontal applications,

vertical industry offerings, and application development environments, allowing

customers to focus on business innovation instead of integrating, validating, and

managing IT infrastructure.

What is Vblock?

VCE Vblock Systems provide seamless integration of Cisco UCS compute,

EMC storage, Cisco Nexus networking and VMware virtualization technologies

with unified management and end-to-end support to accelerate infrastructure

deployment and dramatically reduce the cost of IT.

Where have VCE Vblock Systems been adopted?

VCE Vblock Systems are at the core of more than 1,000 enterprises and service

providers including:

• 8 of the top 10 worldwide telecom companies

• 7 of the top 10 US hospitals

• 5 of the 10 largest banks worldwide

with 2,000+ deployed systems worldwide.

What is the Vblock Ready certification program?

VCE developed the Vblock Ready certification to assure that solutions from

technology partners have been tested and certified on Vblock Systems. The

certification requires a comprehensive test that ensures the joint Vblock solution

meets all entrance, integration, and interoperability criteria and is ready for a

seamless deployment.

What does the Vblock Ready certification testing entail?

This process consists of a comprehensive set of tests that validate a solution’s

ability to run on Vblock™ Systems under normal operating conditions and failure

scenarios. Criteria for certification include:

• Must be virtualized using the currently supported VMware hypervisor

• Functions as designed and advertised

• Must not interfere with the functional aspects of Vblock Systems

• Must not adversely impact performance of Vblock Systems

• Must adhere to industry best practices surrounding patch maintenance and

release strategies

• Must run on all versions of Vblock Systems

PERNIXDATA FVP/VBLOCK

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What combined benefit does the joint PernixData-VCE Vblock solution provide?

The combination of VCE Vblock Systems, the world’s most advanced converged

infrastructure, with PernixData FVP software, the industry’s premier platform

for I/O acceleration, yields optimal virtual machine performance, cost-effective

scalability, and minimized Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

What use cases are ideal for the joint PernixData-VCE Vblock solution?

Rather than grossly overprovisioning the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to

provide adequate performance during brief periods of peak usage (e.g. boot

storms, anti-virus updates), a streamlined architecture enabled by PernixData FVP

software and VCE Vblock Systems can cost-effectively provide end users with a

consistent and high quality user experience.

With many database environments unable to benefit from infrastructure

consolidation enabled by virtualization due to concerns about performance,

database sprawl is a real problem in today’s data center. This proliferation of

equipment creates both a management nightmare and imposes exorbitant

licensing costs. With PernixData FVP software and VCE Vblock systems delivering

unprecedented database performance, robust service availability and industry-

leading data management capabilities, any and all databases may now safely be

virtualized to introduce new levels of operating efficiencies.

For example, a leading financial services organization deployed PernixData FVP

software with VCE Vblock System 720 as part of their next-generation compute

cloud architecture and now see the following results:

• 137,000 IOPS per Host (avg.)

• 0.4 ms Latency (avg.)

• 1,210 MB/s Throughput per Host (avg.)

This enabled th em to make database virtualization a reality, reduced reliance

on custom hardware platforms, and allowed them to support high performing

application containers like Docker and TIBCO SilverFarbric all from within their

private cloud.

Which VCE Vblock System are certified?

The Vblock Ready certification with PernixData FVP software is applicable to all

Vblock Systems.

Is PernixData FVP software only applicable to new VCE Vblock System deployments?

Installed directly into the VMware ESXi kernel as a signed vSphere Installation

Bundle (VIB), deploying PernixData FVP software doesn’t require application

rewrites, VM configuration changes or host reboots. Hence, this non-disruptive

process can be applied to both new and existing Vblock deployments.
