Winter… Is… GREAT!!!

From the Office

As Manitobans, we love to tell people who did not grow up here that each and every winter day is “nothing” and accompany it with the terrifying warning, “Just wait till it gets REALLY cold.”’

I would like to reassure our new Canadian families and International Education students who have come to us from warmer parts of the globe that the last week in January was as bad as it gets. In fact, it was bad enough that native Manitobans were taken aback by the ferocity of the cold. Most will never admit this to you, but it is true. Infrastructure around the province was failing, vehicles couldn’t start, and most typical services were shut down. THAT IS COLD!

Dropping Off and Picking Up Students

We recognize the challenge for parents that exists when trying to drop off or pick up students at the school. It is a congested area and it can be difficult to get near the front doors. However, it is crucial for the safety of the kids that drop-off and pick-up do not happen in the staff parking lot. The exit of the lot is at an awkward location and puts our patrols at some risk. All drop-offs and pick-ups should be done on the street and all students should use the controlled intersections to get to school. We will be putting pylons out to block the entrance to the lot beginning in February (we mean it this time). We will also be discussing this issue at an upcoming Parent Advisory Council meeting with the goal of suggesting solutions to this problem.

Geo Politics: NEW Grade 7 Exploratory

EMMS has introduced a new Grade 7 Exploratory called Geo Politics for the 2018-2019 school year. This Exploratory allows students to experience the process of negotiating with groups who have differing sets of goals and priorities. One of the activities gives students a taste of what living under colonial rule would be like. The students’ final task during the exploratory is to create borders dividing the land and resources of a fictional country that was recently decolonized. The objective of this exploratory is to expand students’ worldview and to improve their ability to communicate, negotiate, and compromise. It is an evolving course as Ms. Loewen and Mrs. Friesen work together with students in each section.

Basketball Season Rolls On

Our basketball program is in full swing. As with Volleyball, we have worked hard to provide new and expanded opportunities for students to be involved in the sport. As always, we are running a boys’ and girls’ team in the Zone IV league. This team is selected from Grade 8 students who wanted to try out for a roster spot. We are also running a boys’ and girls’ team for Grade 7 students who wanted to try out for a roster spot. These teams will play exhibition games against other schools. To ensure that everyone has access to learning the sport and can stay connected if they aspire to make a future team, we are running a Skills Club every Wednesday after school as well. This club will operate in February and may resume in April after the Gymnastics equipment has been moved out of our building.

The central message we want our students to hear is that we can provide an opportunity for anyone who wants to play the sport and receive some instruction.

Intramurals

Intramurals have been running throughout the year and will continue through the winter. Students will need to pay attention to the morning Express and the information by the gym to ensure they know the schedule. We continue to experiment with some formats to try and maximize participation.

I Love to Read at EMMS

February is I Love to Read month. During this time, we will put up a “Guess Who’s Reading” bulletin board. Students can guess who they think is behind the book in the picture and enter for a prize with their guess sheet. The following will also be part of the month:

● Guest readers will visit the school. ● STOP, DROP, and READ times on Tuesdays.  ● February 15 is Dress Up Like Your Favorite

Character Day.  ● March 1 is Read A Shirt day where students can wear a shirt with words on it

(appropriate sayings and words only, please!).  ● Each grade will have a day when they can take part in a book swap. Students may

bring any books from home that they are tired of and trade them for books brought in by other students.

Here are the Book Swap dates:

● Grade 8 - February 8 at 12:30 ● Grade 7 -February 15 at 12:30 ● Grade 6 - February 22 at 12:30 ● Grade 5 - March 1 at 12:30

Hope to see lots of participation and reading happening during I Love to Read month.

Our CPF President, Sara Convery was lucky enough to win an Acer Iconia One 8 tablet at the National CPF conference in October. We have decided to raffle it off as a fundraiser for our group. Tickets will be available for sale at some of our CPF events and some school functions throughout the school year. The winner will be drawn at our year-end picnic in June (you do not need to be in attendance to win). Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Tickets can also be purchased by emailing [email protected]

Camp Soleil-Save the Date!

Morden will once again be hosting Camp Soleil this summer from August 12-16, 2019. This week long day camp is for students who are currently in Grades 1-4 French Immersion. This camp is a great way for your child to be immersed in French in a fun atmosphere during the summer. Stay tuned for registration details.

Parent Advisory Council

Our next meeting will be February 19th in the Library at 7:00 p.m. The PAC is very interested in supplementing educational discussions around a variety of topics and providing Parents with learning opportunities. At the February meeting we will continue discussions and planning for future events while also talking about divisional budgeting and school planning. We invite everyone to join us for the meeting.
