Great Work This week I would like to congratulate Pareanga T from Foundation and Nellie M from 1/2 for the great improvement in their reading. Both these students have worked very hard to improve their reading. Well done. Well done to all those students in Grades three and five who have just finished sitting their NAPLAN test. They have spent the last three days participating in Writing, Mathematics and Reading tests. These are tests that all students in years three and five across Australia sit. From my observations all the students performed to the best of their ability, well done. I would also like to congratulate our School Captains Max and Sumi along with our Student Representa- tive Council, Charlie, Sophie, Zach, Shannan, Lemi, Noah, Chantelle and Eva, for representing William Ruthven PS at the School Children’s ANZAC service held on Thursday 23 rd April, ANZAC day service. The list of students completing great work seems to keep on growing. On Tuesday I had a visit from Jacob, Jai, Yahya, Joshua, Maya, Carlo and SiFeng from Grade 1/2. They showed me some outstand- ing maths work they completed with Mrs B. All these students should be very proud of what they have achieved. School Council The composition of our School Council for 2015 has been finalised. The makeup of our School Council is President: Joe F, Vice President: Christine C, Parent Representatives: Suzie Y and Tamara P, Com- munity representative: Catherine P and Stuart R and Teacher Representatives: Peter M and Kent S. I look forward to working with School Council to ensure our school is a great school. Our next School Council meeting will be on Monday 18 th May. Before and After School Supervision A reminder to all parents that students should not be arriving at school before 8:40am in the morning. Teachers will not be on duty to supervise their child before 8:40 am. At the conclusion of the school day all students should be picked up by 3:15pm at the latest. The school yard will be supervised until 3:15pm. If the students are playing on the play equipment, parents need to ensure that they are super- vising their child. A Taste of School Friday 22 nd May sees the commencement of our school transition program where 2016 Foundation stu- dents have been invited to school for a ’Taste of School’. The students will be participating in simple activities getting them ready for school next year. If you would like your child to attend the taste of school program, please contact Kaye Cleveland or Kerry Bowler. Foundation Guided Reading Groups

14th May 2015 Page 4

Students in Foundation have recently started reading in Guided Reading groups. Each day, they work in small groups to read a book and complete related activities. These students put mixed up sentences from the book back in order and illustrated the sentences to show the meaning.

When we go to Ms Kay’s we start getting our books and ruling up our page. We do some reading and then we do some writing. When we are finished we go onto the whiteboard and we draw things. And then we go back to our classrooms.

Students in grade 5/6C made paper mache` bowls to give to their mums for Mothers Day.

Paper Mache` 1 and ½ cups of water 2 cups of flour Big pinch of Salt (optional) Torn up bits of newspaper Method: Put all ingredients into a bowl and stir until you have a thick, consistency. Make sure your flour is all stirred in. Dip newspaper into the goo and then stick the newspaper onto your balloon. Do 1-2 layers and let dry. Add another 2-4 layers for optimal strength of bowl (it makes it easier to paint as well)

“My favourite part of the paper mache` was when the balloon would slide sideways because of the weight of the wet newspaper. Sometimes it rolled off the table.” Dion “My favourite part was getting our hands dirty.” Mathew H “My favourite part was when we deflated the balloon.” Ioanna “It was like practicing mindfulness. We were focusing very closely on one task.” Emma “My favourite part was painting the bowl” Shannon My favourite part was when we made the mixture and stuck the newspaper on the balloon.” Fatima

Mrs B’s Maths Group - Year 1/2 The answer is 12. Today for our warm up activity in Maths the students had to write as many equations

that equal 12 as they could think of in 5 minutes. Some students managed to fill the

whole page. Here are some of their favourite equations.

Arundel Avenue Kindergarten

Hello our names are Lemi, Nirasha and Mia. For the past two weeks we have been visiting Arundel Avenue Kin-dergarten to help out with the 4 year old kindergartens. We have been bringing our iPads for the little kids to play on an app called Art Maker. We loved singing a song called stretching lycra. It was fun for us and the little kids. We helped the kids make presents for their mothers for Mother’s Day. We would like to thank Mrs Bowler for choosing us to go to the Kinder.

KIDPROOF NEWS

“Watch your back – I am going to turn all your friends away from you”

Cyberbullying and relational aggression

On Thursday night Ella, aged 13, receives a text message from her friend Andi. Ella opens it assuming it is an update from the con-versation they were having at school earlier that day. Immediately, Ella knows that it is not. She feels hot, overwhelmed and tears well up in her eyes when she reads “Don’t think you can get away with what you did to me at school today. Watch your back be-cause I am going to turn all your friends away from you!” Relational aggression refers to acts of emotional bullying hidden among tightly knit networks of friends. Kids who use others emo-tions negatively, use relationships, words and gestures as their weapons of attack. It comes as no surprise to many parents that this is common at this age, particularly with girls. Using relationships to bully and hurt others is by nature covert, secretive and diffi-cult to detect. Unfortunately, an event like the one above happens among school aged children every day. Cyberbullying is classified as relational aggression because it is a direct attempt to inflict harm on a peer through manipulation and with the intent of damaging peer rela-tionships. Posting a harmful remark, blogging nasty comments about someone or sharing inappropriate pictures of a ‘friend’ through a social media platform; where others are intended to read the remarks and see the images, intentionally create wider relational harm. Flaming messages Flaming

messages are hostile or insulting messages that are sent between internet users, and they often involve put downs and profanity.

They fly through cyberspace at lightning speeds and may have long lasting consequences on both the bully and the victim. The

messages are frequently the result of the heated real-world issues that come with schoolyard politics. Although cyberbullying occurs

mostly at home and often on school grounds, the consequences are definitely prevalent during school hours.

Cyberbullying can emerge from a flame war. One person sends a hurtful message to another, they react by sending a flaming mes-

sage back, the original flamer sends one even hotter…and the war has started.

What can your child do if they receive a flaming text? I.C.E At Kid-

proof we have a saying that you can stop a bully in their tracks by using ICE – Ignore, Communicate and Exit. This is a simple and

straightforward strategy any- one can use to stop a situation from moving forward. The best response is no response (Ignore) do

not respond to the flaming message, it can aggravate the situation. Communicate to a trusted adult (preferably one at school and

one at home) about the message. Exit that conversation, the gaming site, the group chat, etc.

Cyberbullying is not normal behaviour, and it is not “just kidding around” Interestingly enough there is correlation between number of devices at home and the level of tech use and abuse amongst the resi-dents. That means, the more de- vices you have in your home, the more likely your child is to be involved in some degree of techno-logical misuse. So, why do kids do it anyway? Young people can use a number of rationales, such as:

They have observed other kids doing it, it be- comes ‘normal’ The other person upset the Their friends bullied online so they thought it was acceptable Because it was fun They didn’t like the victim They were bullied first Forced to do so ( peer pressured)

Whole School Italian Day Celebration Week 9, Term 2, June 9th

2015

ESmart - Cybersafety (cont.) & Italian Day

14th May 2015

This year we are having an Italian culture celebration which will be held Week 9, Term 2, another exciting day of activities for chil-

dren in Foundation to Year 6.

This year’s main events are:

Special assembly: Tuesday June 9th at 9.00a.m. Parents are invited to attend. It would be wonderful if all children could dress up on this day in either the Italian colours of Verde (Green), Bianco (White) and Rosso (Red) or something typical-ly Italian ! e;g. Pinocchio, soccer players, Italian artists, monuments or waiters etc.

Family Trivia Quiz Make sure you check the next Newsletter for details. Be in it to win it! La Comica will perform “Ristorante Mangiabanane” to all of the children. Shared multi-age activities from F-6 will be a feature of the day with rotational activities. Multicultural shared lunch. We are asking parents to please bring a plate to share from their own cultural heritage. Please bring

a snack for recess. Lunch will be at 12.30pm. More details soon! Buon Divertimento. Enjoy your Italian day ragazzi! Signora P (Italian teacher F-2 ) and Signora B ( Italian teacher 3-6 )

What’s the harm? Often people that participate in cyber bullying misunderstand freedom of expression guidelines. Many youth are still developing their critical thinking skills, and these are essential to understanding the long term consequences and repercussions of their online actions. Digital drama’s and drive by postings are common. Youth looking to draw attention to themselves can easily create drama around them. What is happening in the schoolyard can now be dragged into an online space and community and vice versa. Making a hurtful comment and then running away into the darkness of night, while the victim never knew who attacked them is downright cowardly. Parents can be an agent of change If you are worried about the impact of cyberbullying and relational aggression on your child there are things you can do to help. Parents can be an agent of change by proactively opening conversations about this issue. You can start a conversation by ask-ing your child questions such as these:

Have you ever received an angry or rude message from someone via email, text or in a game chat room Have you continued to receive hurtful messages after you asked them to stop? Were you ever afraid to open an email, text message or go onto a game site for fear of seeing a hurtful message? Have you received unwanted sexually explicit photos or suggestions?

The thing is, most kids know the ‘rules’ of how to deflect a bully; block, report and delete. So if they know the rules, why aren’t they following the rules?! This is when underdeveloped critical thinking skills get them into trouble Think about your own digital modelling. As parents it is our responsibility to set rules, boundaries and expectations when it comes to our children’s online behaviour. Consequences must also be enforced when rules and guidelines are broken, just as you would in the real world. What are your values in regards to treating others? If you expect respect, consideration and tolerance, then expect no less of your children. Set the expectations of social behaviour and model this by being a good digital citizen yourself. Encourage kids to do the right thing. Encourage your child to treat others with respect and to stand up for those who are being targeted. Empathy and tolerance go a long way in reducing the instances of bullying and cyber bullying. Encourage conflict to be solved face to face. When a child can see another’s emotions or signs of stress or sadness, they tend to back down. Technology is a privilege Too many youth believe technology is their right. Privileges are earned based on good behaviour and meeting family standards. Enforce integrity and have the strength to restrict or take away online access if digital boundaries are violated. This can be a very tricky thing to do, but it will certainly make an impact.

WRPS Anzac Ceremony & Shrine of Remembrance Excursion

On Thursday the 23rd of April all the SRC (Student Representative Council) went to the Shrine of Remem-brance for the Anzac Soldiers. Everyone was honoured to travel into the city and represent our school for the 100 years of ANZAC. It was an amazing experience which only the Student Representative Council got to go on. Sumi and I laid some flowers to remember the brave and selfless men that fought for us. We would not have what we have today if it were not for them. We must thank them and remember them always.

Cross Country Report By Joel, Noah, Yusuf and Adam On Wednesday the 29th of April, 20 students from grades 3-6 went to Edwardes Lake to run cross country. The weather was perfect for the event. We were all excited and couldn’t wait to run. There were 7 other schools competing against us. The 3/4s had to run 2km while the older kids had to run 3km. We were glad we trained hard because it was really hard race. Everyone from William Ruthven gave their best efforts and finished the

race. Chantelle finished 1st in her race while Fatima, Mikalee, Trinity,

Jay, Livia, Cristina, Max and Riley all qualified for the next stage.

We would also like to thank the parents that came along and helped out

and supported us on the day.
