Great work In this edition of our newsletter I have quite a number of students who have completed some ex- cellent work that needs to be recognised. On the first Tuesday of term 4 we had quite a number of students compete in the Darebin & Dia- mond Valley Division Athletics Carnival. These students were representing the Keon Park District Sports Association and were competing against quite a number of school sports associations. The events were very competitive as were the students. Well done to those students who competed at the district sports finals. In particular congratulations to Chantelle F who then moved onto the re- gional finals. Chantelle competed in the Triple jump, 200m and 800m. This was a fantastic effort by Chantelle. I would also like to congratulate Hassan A for some excellent work in his cooperative reading ac- tivity. Recently we had a number of students from Years 3 to 6 participate in the Annual Australian Maths Competition. Congratulations to Henry L for receiving a High Distinction and Carlo S for receiving a Distinction. I would also like to congratulate the following students for receiving a Credit in the National Competition, Mackenzie R, Sebastion P, Leo F, Anhad S, Tahi C, Jacob L, Vicky Y, Eva Y, Kim H, Ayar E, William G, Noah L, Daniel H, Chantelle F, Raymond H and Ravtej S. Well done to all of the students who competed in this year s Maths Challenge. Congratulations The William Ruthven School community would like to congratulate Lauren S who got married over the holidays. We would like to congratulate Lauren and her husband and wish then all the best for the future. Welcome This term we have seven new families joining William Ruthven Primary School. I would like to welcome these families to our school and know they will have a rewarding time at William Ruth- ven PS. Student attendance Just a reminder to all our families about the importance of ensuring your child attends school on a regular basis and arrives at school in time to start school at 8:50 am each day. This is particularly important for students in the Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 area, where they are setting up positive school habits that will help them in later years. On looking at our student absence data, we have 94 students that have had an attendance rate of 95% or higher. This is an excellent attendance rate. These students will soon be receiving a certif- icate acknowledging their great attendance. They are establishing ideal habits that will allow them to have great success in their learning. Studies have shown that students who have poor attendance, 85% or less have extreme difficulty with their learning and are at risk of becoming disengaged in their learning. An 80% attendance rate equates to being away at least one day per week, which over the school year equates to be- ing away for 40 days in total. If a student has an 80% attendance rate over the time they are at primary school this equates to them missing over a year of their schooling. Parents are required to contact the school or send a note informing the school of their childs ab- sence. If you have any concerns about your childs attendance please contact Mr Marco or my- self. End of Year celebration The students will soon start preparing for our end of year celebration. This year we will be working with the Footsteps Dance Company. Our celebration night will be on Wednesday December 6 th . Please keep this date free and more information will be sent home shortly. FLIP, SLIDE OR TURN? Students from 1/2A used cut outs of their hands to show either a flip, a slide or a turn.

In 1/2 C we have been learning about flips, slides and turns. We were able to flip an image by painting a picture and folding our page in half. We drew some patterns by sliding a shape across our page. We showed turns using things we could find in the classroom and a range of shapes. We had a great time learning some actions to go with our location words.

Grade 3/4 Student Work

These stories have been written by the grade 3 & 4 students. They wrote an imaginary story about what life will be like in 2018. We have be-ing analysing a story called “My Place” by Nadia Wheatley, through reading and viewing each decade. The students focussed on Australian History and the lives of different peo-ple who lived in this one “ place” from 2008 going back to 1788 and before. Every story had to contain the house, the canal and the very big fig tree. Please read their fantastic stories and enjoy their drawings.

After School Supervision A reminder to all parents that students should be collected from school no later than 3:15pm. There have been a large number of students waiting in the office or out in the school yard for long periods of time to be picked up by their parents. Teaching staff and office staff often have meetings to attend to after school and are not always able to supervise children that have not been picked up on time. If parents cannot collect their children by 3:15pm, they should arrange to have them attend the out of school program we have available at the school. For further information or to register in the Oshclub program please visit :

www.oshclub.com.au or alternatively you can call the coordinator on 0478 100 412

or Head Office 03 8564 9000

Lost Property

There is a number of lost property items in the lost property basket outside the grade 1/2B classroom. If your child has lost uniform, could you please take the time to check through our lost property basket. We also urge that all items of uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

—————— A considerable amount of money is spent each year by par-ents buying their child a school uniform. Most parents label their uniform with their child’s name. Throughout the year, students take off their jumper or hat while they are playing or in the classroom during class time. At times children mistakenly pick up a jumper, hat or other piece of uniform thinking that it belongs to them and take it home. If you notice that your child has brought home a piece of uniform that is labelled with another child’s name, could you please return it back to school, as another child is missing that part of their uniform. It would be greatly appreciated by the school and those fami-lies that are missing pieces of school uniform, if you could reg-ularly go through your child’s school uniform making sure that they are correctly labelled and returning any items belonging to other children. Thanking you for your cooperation in this matter.

Enrolments are now being taken for 2018.

Please contact the office for the necessary forms,

brochures or to book a school tour.

Division Athletics

Sport

26th October 2017 Page 7

2017 Division Athletics report On Tuesday the 10th of October, 12 students from William Ruthven Primary School attended the Darebin and Diamond Valley division athletics carnival at Meadowglen Athletics Track in Epping. These students had all won or placed 2nd in their district carnival events earlier this year. We were fortunate that the weather was fine and shared the day with stu-dents from Thomastown Primary School. The events that students had qualified for were as follows; Chantelle F: 800m 12-13, Triple Jump 12-13 and 200m 12-13. Rosie K: Shot Put 11. Dempsey W: Discus 10. Alek D: Shot Put 12-13, Discus 12-13. Bonnie B: Discus 11. Mikalee M: 100m 12-13, Long Jump 12-13. Pauly M: 200m 11. Mikalee M, Shanaya M, Alek D, Lily-Rose M: Circular Relay 12-13. Yusuf N, Pauly M, Kim H, Musacan Y: Circular Relay 11. All of the students competed in good spirits and gave their best efforts in representing our division. Dempsey was still keen to compete in her event despite having injured her arm during the term 3 holidays. Fortunately it was not her throwing arm! The school would like to especially congratulate Chantelle F in winning all of her events (check) and making it through to the regional finals which oc-curred on Wednesday the 18

th of October. The regional finals are one event

below the state championships, so it is a fantastic effort for Chantelle to have made it through to this stage of the carnivals. I would also like to pass on the school’s thanks to Fiona F who has been able to attend all events to support Chantelle and the other students. Sam T Sports Co-Ordinator
