Great Work This week I would like to recognize the great work of all the staff at William Ruthven PS with the work that they undertook last week, looking at the new Australian Cur-riculum that is currently being introduced. The staff spent the day analysing the Australian curriculum and how this fits into our work at William Ruthven. I would also like to congratulate Hannah from grade prep for her terrific work on place value. She is able to place numbers in numerical order and explain how she arrived at her answer. Well done Hannah. Bike Ed Program Over the course of the last two weeks students in grades 3/4 have been taking part in a Bike Education Program that is being run by the City of Darebin. The students have been learning about bike and road safety and improving their riding skills at the same time. The aim of the program is to make the students safer riders on our roads and bike paths. Our thanks go out to the City of Darebin for providing this program. Museum Excursion On Tuesday students form the 3/4 Unit went on an excursion to the Melbourne Mu-seum to participate in a lesson about the human body. This is a topic they have been studying this term. The students had a wonderful time and were really en-gaged in the activities. The museum teachers who conducted the lessons were impressed with the knowledge, enthusiasm and behaviour of our students. Prep transition Our prep transition program commences on Friday 8
th November and will run for 3
weeks. Letters have been sent home to those students who are participating in the Prep transition program. I am looking forward to meeting all the new students and their parents. 2014 enrolments Planning for 2014 has begun. Currently we are looking at the grade structure for next year. If you have a child who is starting in Prep next year or a friend or family member who is looking at transferring to William Ruthven PS, could you please ask them to contact the office as soon as possible. Cup Day holiday A reminder that there will be no school on Tuesday 5th November as this is a pub-lic holiday for the Melbourne Cup. The school will be closed. Allan Waterson

On the 24th Of October the 3/4 has bike education and this is the last day of it. Our teacher was Georgie and there was one more teacher there. When we did the bike education Georgie showed us a power point presentation about safety and all about bikes. On the last day we are going to signals. By Nirasha
Thirty of the 3/4 kids did Bike Ed. There were 15 kids from each grade chosen Our teacher was called Georgie. We are doing two lessons, but we’ve only had one lesson so far. In the first lesson, we had a race, rode around the basketball court and swivelled through cones. I am looking forward to see what we do in the next class. By Jack
Bike Ed is fun because it teaches you to ride better on a bike. Also you get to ride all around the bas-ketball court. Thank you to Georgie and Nadoo. By Matthew
On Thursday for two weeks a selected group of grade 3/4’s went to Bike Ed. A person called Georgie taught us. The first week she taught us about how to immediately stop and to not go over the time that you are meant to stop. We also practiced riding in a straight line, turning corners and weaving through cones. I can’t wait to see what we’re taught today. It is really fun and I hope next year they come again! By Charlie
On Thursday the 24thd October, the 3/4’s had bike education. Only 15 people from each class could go. All we did was muck around on bikes and some people even learned how to ride without training wheels, so it was a pretty big day for them. I really loved it and I can’t wait until I do it again today. By Sophie
Last Thursday we had bike education. First they told us about bike safety but only fifteen 3/4’s got to go. When we got out, they put us into two groups. One group was for the experienced kids and the other group was for the kids who needed training wheels. It was good fun and everyone learnt some-thing new. By Isabel
On the 24th October the 3/4’s had a very special day!! We had Bike Education. The person who taught us safety when riding a bike is Georgie and there was another person helping the people to learn how to ride a bike without training wheels. Some parts of a bike are gears, brakes, handles, seat, pedals, wheels, chain and many more. There is another Bike Education lesson today. By Alyssa
For two Thursdays at WRPS we were lucky to have the opportunity through a Bike Education Program to learn how to ride a bicycle and learn about the safety, skills and needs of a bicycle. We really en-joyed the experience. It was lots of fun. We hope we could have the opportunity again. By Cristina and Marco
The clouds were dark and the wind was blowing. It was a freezing cold Thursday morning as some students in grade 3 & 4 went to their Bike Education Lesson. We did some quick activities to warm up our arm and leg muscles. It was time to put on our helmets and make sure they fit properly. We each got a bike and finally it was time to ride! We started to ride our bikes and complete the drills Georgie (the instructor) gave us. Everyone was laughing and having a great time during the session. We all enjoyed the bike riding and everyone was learning new things while they were riding. By Alana

Grade 3/4 Human Body Quiz
On Tuesday 29th October the Grade 3/4 unit attended the Melbourne Museum as part of their unit of work on the
Human Body. Here are a list of questions that were answered in the excursion. Parents – how many of these questions can you answer? If you’re not sure, check with a Grade 3/4!
The body is made up of tissues, organs, systems and cells. Arrange these parts in order from smallest to largest.
What is an endoscope?
Why can’t you eat before an endoscopy?
Why is diarrhoea watery?
What is peristalsis?
What is the scientific name for snot?
Why do we have hard rings in our trachea?
Mucus is found in our nose, oesophagus and stomach – what does it do in these parts of the body?
What are some different reasons that we need food?
What’s a cross section?
What is food mixed with saliva called when it goes into the oesophagus?
What do the skeletal and muscular systems do?
What is bigger – the small intestine or the large intestine?
After the stomach, where does chyme go?

G.T.A.C SCIENTISTS RETURN
On Tuesday the 29th October G.T.A.C scientists visited yet again, this time with awaited results concerning us. Last week my group put our thumb prints against the inside of an Agar plate. The GTAC people took them away to incu-bate them. A week later Issa, Zion and I found out how many living microbes grew on our thumb print. The result was shockingly weird for me. On my table the leader was an expert scientist named Rose. The leaders on the other tables were named Deniz, Simone, K.J, Nicole and the leading supervisor Subu. All of them knew what they were talking about. There were 3 living types of microbes living on my thumb but more than a billion microbes all together. My group did many experiments including my favourite which was making bubbles with peroxide. During all the lessons I never took my safety glasses off until the end. My eye sight completely went clear compared to the fogginess of the glasses also I enjoyed wearing the white sci-ence coat. In the end I thought it was the best session yet. From using pippets to looking through microscopes, this was a great day and enjoyed myself to the max! By Davorin
G.T.A.C On Tuesday the 29th October G.T.A.C returned to our school and we had another lesson on microbes. Each group had got assigned a scientist. My group’s scientist was called Deniz. He showed us how to add bacteria to blood and water. We also did some tests with Deniz to discover which antibiotic would be most effective for Charlie’s injury. We also got to look at the microbes in bacteria . My group saw the colours red, yellow and white on the agar plate. The shape of it was called cocci. We also did a test called peroxide test. This test was when we added bacteria to water and saw bubbles appear. At the end of the lesson we were asked what type of bacterium it was. The bacte-rium was called staphylococcus aurous. The lesson was very exciting and I enjoyed learning about new microbes. Deniz helped my group understand what microbes are and he helped us perform our tests correctly. By Michael
A Healthy, Happy Child is a Good Learner
SLEEP 10-12 hours each night
A firm and consistent bedtime routine will help most children settle down to sleep. Toddlers need 10-12 hours of sleep. School children need 10-11 hours of sleep. A good amount of sleep helps children behave well and learn properly.
ROUTINE is important
Routines are how families organise themselves to get things done. Try to be predicable so your children know they can count on you. Using pictures and star charts help children get used to routines, especially if you a finding this difficult.
EAT HEALTHY food and exercise
For children to grow and learn they must drink water and eat a variety of healthy foods. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Walk, dance, run, swim and play – being active keeps you healthy.
COME TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY! And arrive on time.
Children from 6 to 17 yrs are required to be at school every day. Children who miss primary school days are more likely to drop out in high school and need extra help in reading, maths and general knowledge. Some of the best learning happens at the start of the day. Being ½ hour late every day means you miss 3 weeks of school a year!

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
ASTHMA
For children with asthma, there are two things parents need to organise for the school.
An Asthma Action Plan signed by your doctor and provided to the school at the beginning of
the school year. The plan is available from the school office, your GP or it can be downloaded
from the following link: www.asthma.org.au/Resources/schoolsandChildrensServices.aspx
Your child needs their own reliever medication and spacer at school. These items will be kept in
the sick bay, labelled with your child’s name.
ALLERGY/ANAPHYLAXIS
If your child has allergies/anaphylaxis it is important that the school is aware of this and is provided
with an Allery/Anaphylaxis Action Plan immediately, along with any medication eg. Adrenaline
Auto Injector (Epipen)
SICKNESS/ Infectious diseases
If your child is unwell, please consider not sending them to school until they have recovered.
SCHOOL IS NO PLACE FOR A SICK CHILD! For further information visit: www.health.vic.gov.au/

It was a chilly start to the bat tennis games on the 25th of October 2013.
When we got there, we thanked Reservoir Primary for inviting us and then the singles games started. The first girls match was a close game by Jordan, she sadly lost with a score of 7 games to 9. The second girl single game was won by Sarah with a score of Sarah to 9 and her opponent to 5. After all the single games had finished, the double matches started.
